For Call of Duty crashes, freezes, lag or connection errors, first identify the game, platform, exact symptom and any error code. Then check the game and platform service status before changing local settings: a service interruption will not be fixed by restarting your router. The right next step depends on whether you have a connection problem, a PC crash, a console freeze or a known in-game bug.
Start by identifying the problem
These games do not share one universal fix. Before troubleshooting, note:
- The specific game: Vanguard, Warzone, Modern Warfare or Black Ops Cold War.
- Your platform and, on PC, the storefront or launcher you use.
- What happens: a crash, freeze, lag, failed matchmaking, disconnection or an in-game display issue.
- The exact error message or code, when the issue began, and whether it followed a game update.
These details help distinguish a service outage from a local network issue, a PC stability problem, an account concern or a known bug.
If you cannot connect, matchmaking is slow or the game lags
Check services before changing your network
- Check Activision’s service-status information and the status page for your platform. Activision’s connection guidance says interruptions to game or platform services can prevent a connection until service returns.
- Confirm that you are signed in to the relevant platform account, then test the console or PC’s internet connection. On PC, use your platform’s own connection troubleshooting guidance if its connection test fails.
- If services are operating and your local connection works, retest the game and record the time, region if relevant, platform and any error message or code.
Try Ethernet only if Wi-Fi may be the weak link
If you play over Wi-Fi, try a wired connection and compare whether the connection is more stable. Activision Support’s Connecting to a Call of Duty: Black Ops Game guidance, updated June 16, 2026, says it “strongly recommend[s] using a wired Ethernet connection during online gameplay.” That is general advice, not a guarantee that Ethernet will fix lag: it is relevant when Wi-Fi reliability or bandwidth is contributing to the problem.

Do not infer an account restriction from symptoms alone
Long matchmaking times or high ping do not, by themselves, establish that an account is banned or under review. Activision’s Black Ops Cold War connection guidance notes that such symptoms may occur when an account is under review, but they do not confirm that this is the cause. Record what you see and use Activision’s account or support channels rather than drawing a conclusion from connection symptoms.
If the game crashes or freezes
Try the basic recovery steps
- After a freeze, restart the game. If it remains unresponsive, restart the console or PC.
- Check that your system software is current.
- On PC, compare your system with the game’s minimum requirements, update your graphics driver, check that the computer has adequate ventilation, and close unnecessary background applications.
- Temporarily close overlays, recording software and input-remapping utilities on PC. Activision warns that these types of background tools can interfere with gameplay or game startup.
For recurring PC crashes, use the game-specific support route
If a crash persists, note the error code and whether it occurs at startup, during play or after a particular action. Activision provides a Call of Duty PC Crash Report where available. For persistent hardware-specific problems on PlayStation or Xbox, Activision’s crash guidance directs players to the relevant console support service.

Black Ops Cold War error codes are dated examples
Activision’s Black Ops Cold War known-issues page, updated July 7, 2023, listed PC crash or freeze reports with codes 887A0005, 0x0 (0xA2E8EF8F) N and 0x0 (0x1AEC5F31) N, and advised updating drivers and closing background applications. These are examples from that dated tracker snapshot, not confirmation that the codes identify a currently active issue. Check the current game-specific support information before treating an old entry as applicable.
Check known issues for the specific game
Activision maintains separate support hubs and known-issue information for these games. Tracker entries are snapshots: an issue’s appearance on an older page does not establish that it is still active, and the same symptom can have different causes on different platforms.

| Game | What the dated support information establishes | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Warzone | Activision’s known-issues tracker was updated August 7, 2026. It describes reports that the displayed COD Points balance may show zero after an update and may be restored by restarting the application; it also lists reports of a 0x error on Xbox on PC. | Check the tracker for the current entry and its platform details. The descriptions are reports, not guaranteed causes or universal symptoms. |
| Black Ops Cold War | The known-issues page was updated July 7, 2023. It listed the PC crash-code reports described above. | Use the current support page for status; do not treat the 2023 listing as proof of an active bug. |
| Vanguard | The support hub’s listed known-issue update is dated November 22, 2023. Its crash-or-freeze guidance was updated March 5, 2024. | Check the game’s official support hub and tracker for current entries and the affected platform. |
| Modern Warfare | The support hub’s known-issue listing is dated June 21, 2024. | Check the official game-specific tracker for the latest status. That dated listing does not establish whether an individual issue remains active. |
Warzone’s tracker also describes the COD Points display issue as potentially recoverable after restarting the application. If your balance display matches that report, try a restart and check the tracker before assuming that your balance has actually changed.

Contact Activision or your platform’s support service when the relevant service is available, your local connection or system checks pass, and the problem continues. Include the game, platform, exact error text or code, when it started, and what troubleshooting you tried. For PC crashes, submit the Call of Duty PC Crash Report where available; for a persistent console problem tied to the hardware or system, use PlayStation or Xbox support as Activision’s crash guidance recommends.
