Yes—Call of Duty: Warzone is free to download and play. You do not need to buy a paid annual Call of Duty game, PlayStation Plus, or Xbox Game Pass Core for standard Warzone online multiplayer. Download it only from the official Call of Duty: Warzone page, PlayStation Store, Xbox/Microsoft Store, Battle.net, or Steam.

The PlayStation listing can still display older PS4-related metadata. That does not override Activision’s newer platform notice: new PS4 downloads were removed on June 4, 2026. For a new installation, use the PS5 version and check the current Activision platform update if the store presents an unexpected compatibility message.
How to download Warzone on Xbox Series X|S
- Open the Xbox Store or Microsoft Store.
- Search for Call of Duty: Warzone.
- Select the free listing. The Xbox page identifies the edition as Free+.
- Choose Get or Install.
Xbox may display Warzone inside a broader Call of Duty application or show a separate content pack. This does not mean you have to purchase Modern Warfare 4, Black Ops 7, or another premium Call of Duty title. Use the free Warzone listing linked above.
If Warzone is already in your library:
- Open My games & apps.
- Select See all.
- Open Full library.
- Choose All owned games.
- Select Warzone and choose Install all.
How to download Warzone on PC
Windows users can install the official game through Battle.net, Steam, or the Xbox app/Microsoft Store. The choice is primarily about your preferred launcher, library, and account ecosystem. The launcher may still be called Call of Duty, and Xbox or other storefronts may present Warzone as part of a larger Call of Duty application. That packaging is not the same as requiring a paid game. Activision has also documented a download flow that separates Warzone from premium annual titles in the broader Call of Duty experience.
PlayStation Plus is not required for Warzone
PlayStation’s PlayStation Plus FAQ identifies Warzone among the free-to-play games that do not require a PlayStation Plus membership for online play. A Plus subscription can provide other benefits, but it is not a requirement for standard Warzone multiplayer.
Xbox Game Pass Core is not required for local Warzone multiplayer
The official Xbox listing states that Game Pass Core is not required to play Warzone. Other paid online Call of Duty modes may have different subscription requirements.

Playing Warzone through a cloud service may require an eligible Game Pass tier or other cloud-play entitlement, but that is separate from downloading and running the free game locally on an Xbox or Windows PC.
An Activision account is required
Warzone requires an Activision account for online play. Before linking your console, Steam, or Battle.net account, sign in to the Activision account you intend to keep using. Activision’s registration process asks for a display name, valid email address, password, region, and acceptance of the account terms and privacy policy. A phone number linked to the Activision account may also be required in some cases.
Use the same Activision account when moving between supported platforms. Creating a second account and linking your new platform to it can make your progression appear to have disappeared.
Current PC system requirements
The following requirements come from Activision’s PC support page, updated March 11, 2026. They apply to desktop Windows PCs and can change as Warzone receives updates. Check the live Activision requirements page before upgrading hardware or troubleshooting an older machine.

There is a small but important difference between official listings: Activision’s detailed support page says 116 GB at launch, while the Activision storefront and some platform listings show 125 GB. Storage requirements also change with updates. In practice, reserve at least 125 GB on an SSD and leave additional free space for patches, temporary installation files, and shader data. Do not rely on old 80–90 GB figures from launch-era Warzone guides.

Windows security requirements
TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are part of the current PC requirements. Warzone also uses Activision’s RICOCHET Anti-Cheat system. Activision says its supported PC titles use a kernel-level driver that operates when you are playing a RICOCHET-protected game and is removed when the game is uninstalled. What is free, and what costs money?
The free part is access to the Warzone client and its free-to-play modes. It does not mean that every Call of Duty product or every item inside Warzone costs nothing.
- Free: downloading Warzone and accessing its free-to-play online experience.
- Optional purchases: COD Points, Battle Pass upgrades, BlackCell, cosmetic bundles, operator items, weapon blueprints, and other in-game content.
- Separate purchases: paid annual Call of Duty campaigns, premium multiplayer, and premium editions are not included merely because you installed Warzone.
The official Warzone page checked for this guide lists Season 05 BlackCell at $29.99. Prices, seasons, bundles, and regional availability can change, so treat that figure as a current-page example rather than a permanent price.
The PlayStation listing also identifies optional in-game purchases. You can play Warzone without buying COD Points or premium Battle Pass content.
Crossplay, cross-progression, and account linking
Warzone supports crossplay and cross-progression through your Activision account. Use the same Activision account on PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, Battle.net, or another supported platform to carry your eligible progression between systems.
Cross-platform purchases are more complicated:
- Items purchased with COD Points are generally available on linked platforms.
- COD Points themselves may remain tied to the platform where they were purchased or earned.
- Some platform-specific purchases and real-money content may not transfer between console families.
Activision’s COD Points guidance explains the current platform rules. If you are changing platforms, spend or manage platform-bound currency carefully and do not assume every purchase transfers identically.

Activision announced that Warzone would be removed from the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One digital storefronts beginning June 4, 2026. New players on those consoles should not expect to download it now.

Existing owners may retain access to an installation and a limited remaining play window. Activision says last-generation service continues through the end of Black Ops 7 Season 06, with Warzone becoming unavailable on PS4 and Xbox One when Modern Warfare 4 Season 1 begins. The exact transition timing is therefore tied to that seasonal change.
If you are moving from PS4 or Xbox One, install Warzone on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or a supported Windows PC and sign in with the same Activision account. Do not assume that an old store page showing PS4 compatibility means new downloads are still permitted; the newer Activision platform update controls the practical availability.
Warzone Mobile
Warzone Mobile is not an alternative current download. Activision says it was removed from Google Play and Apple’s App Store in May 2025, its servers went offline on April 17, 2026, and it can no longer be played.
For a current Call of Duty mobile game, Activision points players toward Call of Duty: Mobile. Do not download an APK claiming to restore Warzone Mobile service.
Nintendo Switch 2
There is no current official standalone Warzone download confirmed for Nintendo Switch 2 in the supplied storefront information. Activision’s Modern Warfare 4 announcement provides future Switch 2 and Warzone-integration context, but it should not be treated as confirmation that the current standalone Warzone client is available on Switch 2.

- Confirm platform support. PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows PC are the current supported download paths. New PS4 and Xbox One downloads are no longer available.
- Use the free Warzone listing. If a store asks you to buy a premium Call of Duty game, return to the official Warzone listing instead of selecting a paid edition.
- Check storage. Keep at least 125 GB free on the target drive, plus extra room for updates and temporary files.
- Update Windows or the console. On PC, current support is for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Windows 7 and Windows 8 are not supported.
- Repair the launcher installation. In Battle.net, use Scan and Repair. In Steam, use the option to verify the integrity of the game files.
- Repair the Xbox PC installation. For a documented Xbox PC 0x error, use Windows Settings → Apps → Installed apps → Call of Duty → Advanced options → Repair.
- Update graphics drivers. Use current drivers from your GPU manufacturer and restart the PC after installation.
- Allow shader preloading to finish. Interrupting shader compilation can cause startup or rendering problems even after the main download completes.
- Check current issues and service status. Review Activision’s Known Issues page before repeatedly uninstalling and reinstalling.
Fixes if Warzone installs but will not launch or let you play
- Check the Activision account. Sign in with the intended account and confirm that the Steam, Battle.net, Xbox, or PlayStation account is linked to it.
- Complete phone verification if requested. A phone number may be required for some accounts or platform configurations.
- Check TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot. These are required by the current PC requirements and may need to be enabled in your system firmware.
- Confirm Windows support. Activision currently supports updated 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11, not Windows 7 or Windows 8.
- Look for security-software conflicts. RICOCHET and other security tools can be involved in launch or access problems. Use Activision’s official troubleshooting instructions rather than downloading third-party fixes.
- Check for an outage. A server or platform-service problem cannot be repaired by reinstalling local files.
- Finish updates and shaders. An incomplete patch or interrupted shader-preloading process can make the game appear installed while it is not ready to play.

Do I need PlayStation Plus for Warzone?
No. PlayStation identifies Warzone as a free-to-play game that does not require PlayStation Plus for online play.
Do I need Xbox Game Pass Core for Warzone?
