Call of Duty: WWII lag has two common meanings: a network problem that causes rubber-banding, delayed hit markers or disconnects, and a rendering problem that causes low frame rates, freezes or local hitches. The fixes are different. Use the symptom-based checks below, starting with service status and then following either the network or PC-performance path.
What “lag” and “stuttering” mean in WWII
Activision defines latency as “the amount of time it takes for data to travel between locations, measured in milliseconds.” High or inconsistent latency affects the connection between your game and the match server. Activision describes stuttering as “An effect that makes your character appear to freeze and skip ahead while moving.” In practice, players often use lag for both network delay and a computer that cannot render frames smoothly.

| What you see | Most likely path | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Your character jumps backward or appears to slide | Network latency, packet loss or unstable Wi-Fi | Service status, then a wired connection |
| Shots register late or hit markers arrive after the target moves | Network delay or packet loss | Ping, bandwidth use and other devices on the network |
| You are removed from a match or lose connection | Service, ISP, routing or local connection problem | Activision and platform service status |
| The image freezes briefly while your connection remains normal | PC rendering, drivers, settings or background software | Windows, graphics-driver and frame-rate checks |
| Frame rate falls in busy scenes without rubber-banding | PC performance or graphics configuration | Restore the game’s optimal graphics settings |
This distinction is a practical diagnostic framework based on Activision’s separate network and PC guidance. A match can also have both problems, so repeat the test after each major change rather than assuming one cause explains every symptom.

Check service status before changing your setup
Open Activision’s online-service status page and the status page for your platform before replacing a cable, changing drivers or reinstalling the game. Activision notes that service alerts can cause connection issues until the affected systems are operational. If an alert is active, local changes may not help; wait for the service to recover and test again.

Fix network lag, rubber-banding and delayed hit markers
1. Switch from Wi‑Fi to Ethernet
Connect the gaming PC or console directly to the router with an Ethernet cable. Activision says Wi‑Fi varies in reliability and bandwidth and recommends a wired connection for online gameplay; it also states that “Wired Ethernet connections will maintain the minimum bandwidth connection that is required for online gaming.” A Cat6 Ethernet cable is a suitable search term when you need to buy a cable, but the cable alone cannot correct an ISP, server or routing problem.
- Plug one end of the cable into the router and the other into the computer or console.
- Disable Wi‑Fi on the gaming device so it uses the wired link.
- Launch a match and compare movement, hit-marker timing and disconnects with your previous connection.
If Ethernet is not practical, place the device where it has a stronger, less congested wireless signal and avoid treating a marginal Wi‑Fi connection as equivalent to a cable. The exact improvement depends on the router, interference, home layout and ISP.
2. Stop competing traffic
Other people and devices can consume the bandwidth available to a match. Activision specifically calls out downloads, video or music streaming and gameplay uploads. Pause those activities while testing WWII:

Run the same match after traffic is quiet. If the symptoms disappear, the connection was being shared beyond what it could sustain consistently; schedule downloads for another time or keep them paused while playing.
3. Check ping and available bandwidth
Use the network information shown by your router, operating system or platform to check ping and bandwidth while the issue occurs. Ping is the round-trip delay to a destination, not a guarantee of game quality: a low average can still hide packet loss or sudden spikes. Compare results when nobody else is using the connection and when normal household traffic resumes.
Geography and ISP quality matter. A player far from the relevant match server can have higher latency even with a good local network, and an ISP routing problem can persist after you move to Ethernet. If other online games and services are also unstable, contact the ISP with the times, platforms and symptoms you recorded.

4. Use router Quality of Service when available
Activision mentions routers that specialize in reducing lag and recommends Quality of Service (QoS) features where supported. QoS can prioritize game traffic over less time-sensitive transfers, but the names and controls differ by router. Enable the router’s gaming or QoS function only after recording the original behavior, then test a match. Do not assume QoS can create bandwidth you do not have or bypass a congested ISP route.

On consoles, use the platform’s built-in network test. Activision documents connection tests for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and says multiplayer-connection tests can help identify causes of lag or disconnects. Record the reported connection result, then repeat it with Ethernet and with household streaming paused. A successful local test does not prove that every route to a game server is healthy, so also check service status and the behavior in an actual match.
Fix PC rendering stutter, freezes and FPS drops
1. Update Windows and the graphics driver
Activision’s PC guidance tells players to ensure they have the latest drivers and Windows update. Install pending Windows updates, restart, and then install the current driver for your graphics hardware from the manufacturer’s normal update channel. Reboot again before testing WWII. If a problem began immediately after a driver change, note that timing and use the driver’s available rollback option rather than repeatedly installing unrelated versions.

2. Restore the game’s optimal graphics settings
Open WWII’s graphics options and reset them to the in-game optimal or recommended settings. This gives you a known baseline instead of trying to tune many options at once. Test a repeatable scene or the same mode after applying the baseline. If performance improves, raise individual settings one at a time and keep the change that does not reintroduce hitches. If stutter returns, revert the last change.
Do not use a network fix to solve a rendering problem: changing routers will not raise a frame rate that is limited by graphics settings, drivers or another application.
3. Close and isolate background applications
Activision advises investigating other applications that may negatively affect Steam games. Close overlays, recording tools, browsers with active media, launchers and utilities you do not need, then test. If the hitch disappears, reopen programs one at a time to identify the conflict. Keep security software active; the goal is to isolate a performance conflict, not to remove protection permanently.

4. Launch Steam and WWII as administrator for a test
Activision’s PC guide includes launching Steam and the game as administrator among its troubleshooting steps. Close Steam, right-click its shortcut, choose Run as administrator, and start WWII from that session. If needed, apply the same temporary test to the game executable through its file properties. Administrator launch can expose a permissions problem, but it does not repair a failing driver or guarantee smoother performance; return to a normal launch if it makes no difference.
5. Verify the Steam game cache
Damaged or incomplete files can produce freezes or unexpected behavior. In Steam, open Library, right-click Call of Duty: WWII, choose Properties, open Installed Files (the wording may appear as Local Files in older Steam builds), and select Verify integrity of game files. Let Steam finish, allow it to reacquire any files it reports, restart Steam if requested, and test the game again.
6. Use a clean-boot style test when the conflict is unclear
If updates, baseline graphics settings and file verification do not identify the cause, perform a controlled Windows startup test that loads only essential services and startup items. Record what you disable, restart, and test WWII. If the stutter disappears, restore items in small groups until the offending application or service is found. Re-enable normal startup items after testing so you do not leave unrelated Windows functions disabled.

A frame hitch can make a player appear to teleport, while packet loss can make a smooth frame rate feel delayed. Use an observable split test:
- Play with an Ethernet connection and competing traffic stopped.
- Watch for rubber-banding, delayed hit markers or disconnects.
- In the same session, note whether the image itself freezes or the frame rate drops while your character still responds normally.
- Apply only the fixes for the symptom that changed, then retest.
If Ethernet and quiet bandwidth remove the network symptoms but local freezes remain, continue with Windows, driver, graphics and background-application checks. If graphics changes have no effect but movement still jumps or matches disconnect, continue with the ISP, router and service-status path.
Choose fixes by reversibility and scope
| Action | Symptom targeted | Reversible? | What it cannot solve |
|---|---|---|---|
| Check game and platform status | Widespread disconnects or failed matchmaking | Yes | A private Wi‑Fi or PC fault |
| Use Ethernet | Wi‑Fi spikes, rubber-banding and packet loss | Yes | Server outages, distant servers or ISP routing |
| Stop downloads and streams | Congestion during household use | Yes | Insufficient ISP service outside local traffic peaks |
| Enable router QoS | Competition between game traffic and other transfers | Yes; record the original setting | Low service capacity or a faulty route |
| Update Windows and graphics drivers | Frame drops, freezes and rendering glitches | Usually; rollback may be available | Network latency |
| Restore optimal graphics settings | Low FPS and GPU/CPU overload | Yes | Packet loss or service outages |
| Verify Steam files | Corrupted or incomplete installation files | Yes; Steam replaces affected files | Hardware failure or ISP problems |
Hardware choices and realistic limits
A Cat6 Ethernet cable is the most direct physical purchase for Activision’s recommended wired setup. Choose a length that avoids sharp bends and lets the connector seat fully; the important change is the wired path, not a promise of a particular ping. A QoS-capable router is a secondary option when several people share the connection. Router features vary, and neither product category can guarantee a lower ping when the limitation is server geography, an ISP route or a service outage.
Quick Recap
Final troubleshooting checklist
- Identify whether the symptom is rubber-banding and delayed hit markers or a local frame hitch and freeze.
- Check Activision and platform service status.
- For network symptoms, test Ethernet, stop competing traffic, check ping and bandwidth, and try supported QoS.
- For PC symptoms, update Windows and graphics drivers, restore optimal graphics settings, close or isolate background applications, test administrator launch, and verify Steam files.
- For console symptoms, run the built-in PlayStation 4 or Xbox One network test documented by Activision.
- If local changes do nothing, document the time and pattern and investigate ISP quality, routing, geography and service availability instead of repeatedly changing game settings.
