What is Black Ops Royale?
Black Ops Royale brings Blackout-inspired rules into Warzone as a distinct battle royale experience. Call of Duty described it as “a unique experience that pays homage to the Blackout core gameplay,” rather than a remake. The mode is free to play and centers on finding equipment and improving weapons during a match instead of choosing a custom loadout before dropping in. How the match rules differ from standard Warzone
At launch, Black Ops Royale was designed for up to 100 players in 25 four-person squads on Avalon. Players start with basic gear and scavenge for weapons, armor, and equipment. There are no custom starting loadouts, Buy Stations, or Gulag. The official deep dive and Season 02 Reloaded patch notes describe the launch format; later updates may change mode details.
- Starting gear: basic equipment rather than a custom weapon loadout.
- Match economy: no Buy Stations; upgrades and supplies come from scavenging and activities.
- Return after elimination: no Gulag; redeployment relies on tokens or captured towers.
The collapsing boundary brings squads together. The Season 02 Reloaded notes say its pacing was tuned to prompt earlier movement and more mid-match engagements while preserving time for early exploration and activities. Those notes list a planned match duration of 20–25 minutes, a design target rather than a measured average.

How weapons and rarity upgrades work
Weapons are loot with preset build archetypes, not blank platforms for players to configure freely. Attachment Kits found as ground loot, in supply boxes, or through activities raise a weapon’s rarity and add the next attachment in its predetermined path. The deep dive documents five rarity levels: Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic, and Legendary. Normally secured weapons can reach five attachments at Legendary. The launch documentation also ties class benefits to rarity. It says most weapon types improve bullet velocity at Rare and Legendary; sniper rifles instead receive bullet-drop and velocity improvements at Uncommon and Epic. These are documented launch-system details, not guarantees that every later patch or loot pool will retain the same balance.

How movement, survival, and redeployment work
Wingsuits and wall jumps
Players enter the match using wingsuits instead of the traditional parachute, and wall-jumping is enabled for everyone. These movement options distinguish the mode’s traversal across Avalon. Players begin with base health and armor, then find armor items and recovery equipment as loot. The launch rules are described in the Season 02 Reloaded patch notes.
Redeploy Tokens and Towers
The launch notes describe two routes back after elimination. Each player receives one free Redeploy Token at the start of a match, with additional tokens available; using one brings an eliminated player back. Alternatively, a squad can capture a Redeploy Tower to bring eliminated teammates back without spending a token. This is the mode’s alternative to the Gulag.

What objectives and Cradle Breaches add
Optional activities give squads reasons to take risks in pursuit of loot or other advantages. Cradle Breaches are hazardous areas affected by Cradle Gas, where players face hallucinated zombie hordes for high-value rewards. The launch deep dive describes these activities, while the Season 05 Reloaded announcement promoted enhanced objectives and dangerous zones as part of the mode’s return.

Call of Duty published its mode deep dive on March 2, 2026. The launch timing listed in the patch notes was March 12 at 9 p.m. PT / March 13 at 12 a.m. ET. On August 18, 2026, the publisher announced the mode’s return during Season 05 Reloaded. In September 2026, its Season 06 notes described that season as the last chance to play Black Ops Royale. The cited notice does not state a final date, so check Warzone’s live playlist and official Season 06 updates for current availability.
