Start by restarting Steam and your PC, then check whether the error affects one server or every server. If the message is Disconnected by VAC: You cannot play on secure servers, use the steps below; other connection messages may need a different branch.
What a VAC authentication error means
For the message “Disconnected by VAC: You cannot play on secure servers,” Valve says the error can be caused by third-party software interfering with the game or Steam, a Steam service failure, or modified game files. Valve lists examples such as CCleaner, PowerShell, Cheat Engine, IObit Start Menu 8, DLL injectors, hypervisors, and Steam idlers. These are examples of possible conflicts, not a claim that every version of each program will cause the error. See Steam Support’s secure-server error guidance.
Check the exact wording before troubleshooting. “Secure connection failed,” “No Steam logon,” and “A connection to the VAC servers could not be made” are covered by a separate Steam Support article, which points to connection problems, security software, background applications, and third-party anti-cheat applications as possible causes. Follow that connection-error guidance if it matches your message.
Fix the error in a practical order
1. Restart Steam and your computer
- Exit Steam completely using Steam > Exit.
- Restart your computer.
- Open Steam, confirm it is online, and try joining a server again.
Valve specifically recommends restarting the computer if the secure-server error persists across all servers.

#1 Best Overall
- Single-elimination, team-based online shooter
- Completely overhauled with better graphics, new characters, items, and environments
- Package includes Half-Life 2: Deathmatch and Day of Defeat: Source
- Real-world physics adds depth the gameplay
- Internet connection required for online play
2. Close conflicting programs and remove modifications
Close applications that may inject code, modify game files, manage system behavior, or otherwise interfere with Steam. If you recently installed or ran a utility, overlay, injector, third-party anti-cheat, skin changer, or custom texture, close or remove it and test again. Remove game-file modifications rather than trying to keep them while repairing authentication.
Do not leave antivirus or firewall protection disabled. If security software appears to be involved, check its trusted-app or firewall settings for Steam and the game instead. Valve’s broader connection guidance discusses security software and background applications as potential causes.

3. Verify the game files
- Open Steam > Library.
- Right-click the game and select Properties.
- Choose Installed Files, then select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish; the check can take several minutes.
Steam may report that one or more files failed verification because local configuration files can differ normally. A verification mismatch alone does not prove that the installation is damaged. See Steam’s file-verification instructions.
4. Repair Steam Service on Windows
If the error continues, Valve documents repairing the Steam Service. This step is for Windows and requires administrator privileges. If Steam is installed somewhere other than the default folder, substitute your actual Steam folder in the command.

- Exit Steam.
- Open the Windows Run dialog.

Use the matching instructions in Valve’s secure-server troubleshooting page if your Windows setup or Steam path differs.
5. Check whether the problem is one server or all servers
Try several servers. If only one fails, the problem may be that server’s connection to Steam Authentication Servers; it does not necessarily indicate a problem with your PC. Steam Support’s Server Verification Failed guidance recommends checking more than one server.

If every server fails, check whether Steam is online and whether the client has lost its Friends-network connection. Review Steam availability, reconnect the client if it is offline, then investigate local connectivity and security software. For messages such as “A connection to the VAC servers could not be made,” use the broader connection troubleshooting page.
6. Use Windows system repairs only if the problem persists
Valve also documents restoring particular boot settings to their defaults and running sfc /scannow to repair Windows system files. These are advanced Windows steps: they require an elevated Command Prompt and a restart. Follow Valve’s instructions carefully rather than changing unrelated boot or security settings. If Windows says Secure Boot policy prevents a change, do not try to bypass that protection; stop and follow the applicable Windows guidance.

Use the symptoms to choose the next check
| What you observe | Most useful next check |
|---|---|
| Error began after installing software or changing game files | Close or remove likely interfering software and game modifications, then verify the game files. |
| Only one server fails | Try other servers; the affected server may be unable to contact Steam Authentication Servers. |
| All servers fail and Steam appears offline or disconnected | Restore the Steam client’s online connection and check Steam availability before further game repairs. |
| All servers fail while Steam is online, with no obvious recent change | Restart, verify files, then consider the Windows Steam Service repair if applicable. |
A VAC authentication error is not the same as a VAC ban
An authentication or secure-server connection error by itself does not show that your account has a VAC ban. Valve describes VAC as an automated system that detects cheats on users’ computers when they connect to VAC-secured servers. Its policy says VAC bans are permanent and non-negotiable, except when Valve determines a ban was issued incorrectly, in which case it is automatically removed. Read Steam Support’s error guidance for connection troubleshooting and its VAC System policy for ban information. Do not treat connection repairs as a way to appeal or remove an actual ban.
