If Call to Arms: Gates of Hell crashes within seconds of launch or returns to the desktop, first test a clean, reversible startup: close trainers and DLC unlockers completely, launch without mods, and check the game’s basic Windows and display settings. A developer-marked Steam Community post lists several possible causes, not one guaranteed fix, so work through the checks below and note what changes. These instructions address crashes during startup; a crash that occurs only later in a particular mode may need different diagnosis.
Start with the checks most likely to isolate a startup conflict
Make one change at a time and try launching again. That makes it easier to tell whether a particular check mattered. The sequence below is practical triage based on the developer-marked checklist, not an official diagnostic algorithm.
- Close trainers and unlockers. Exit tools such as WeMod and DLC unlockers, then check Task Manager to ensure their processes are no longer running. A community reply in the troubleshooting thread notes that a trainer can matter while running in the background even when it is not actively being used.
- Try a clean, unmodded launch. Disable mods and use the game’s safe mode option if available. If it launches this way, re-enable mods individually to identify a possible conflict.
- Check antivirus and Steam’s executable name. The developer checklist flags antivirus interference and the Steam executable name as possible startup issues. Review antivirus quarantine or protection history for a blocked game file, and verify the executable name against the developer’s Steam thread rather than renaming files speculatively.
- Confirm the display resolution. The checklist specifies at least 1360×768. Check Windows display settings and make sure the game is not being launched at a lower resolution.
- Clear the shader cache. Close the game, then check these locations and remove the game’s

The developer post lists both paths; players in the thread report that they may not both exist. The game can recreate its cache when launched.
- Check Visual C++ and restart. Confirm the required Visual C++ runtime is installed, then restart Windows before trying again. The developer checklist names Visual C++ and a restart but does not specify a particular runtime version in the cited post.
- Test with Auto HDR disabled. If Auto HDR is enabled in Windows, turn it off temporarily and try starting the game again.

If it still crashes before reaching the menu
The same developer post lists further possibilities. These are checks to investigate, not confirmed explanations for every crash.
- Inspect the game log. The post flags a corrupt
game.logas a possible cause. If you test by removing or moving the log, first close the game and keep a backup so you can restore it if needed. - Check Windows ransomware protection. Review Windows Security’s controlled folder access settings and notifications to see whether the game was blocked from accessing a protected folder. Only allow the game if you trust the file and the block is relevant.
- Test fullscreen support. The checklist mentions fullscreen as a possible issue. Try the available windowed or fullscreen setting, changing only that setting between launches.
- Review audio configuration. The post also names audio configuration as a possible factor. Check the selected Windows output device and game audio settings, and test with a different available output if practical.
Check that the PC meets the listed baseline
Steam’s store page lists these minimum requirements for the game. Requirements are a baseline, not a guarantee that a system will be free of crashes.

Identify whether this is a startup crash or a later gameplay crash
The developer checklist is presented for crashes during startup. If the game reaches its menu and only crashes during a specific mode or later in a session, record that distinction rather than assuming the startup checklist identifies the cause.

- Does the game close before the menu, at the menu, while loading, or during gameplay?
- Does it return directly to the desktop, show an error, or hang?
- Were mods, trainers, or unlockers running, including in the background?
- What does the latest
game.logor error message say?
These details make the issue easier to report and help distinguish a clean-launch problem from a later, mode-specific crash.

When contacting them, include when the crash happens, whether the game reaches the menu, the checks you tried, and the latest log or exact error message. The support options are listed on Steam Support’s page for the game.
