Callina Liang says playing Chun-Li in the new live-action Street Fighter film felt exciting but also brought “a lot of pressure,” intensified after she saw online questions about whether her physique could match the character’s powerful proportions. The role required a rapid, demanding transformation while Liang tried to satisfy fans of one of gaming’s most recognizable fighters.
Why the Chun-Li role carried unusual pressure
Capcom announced on September 5, 2025, that filming had begun on its live-action Street Fighter adaptation and identified Liang as Chun-Li. The film is scheduled for release on October 16, 2026. Chun-Li is not an obscure supporting character: she is one of the franchise’s defining figures, with a visual design, fighting style and signature moves familiar to generations of players.

In a September 1, 2026 interview with Omelete, Liang described the opportunity as “very exciting” but “also a lot of pressure.” She said she had loved Chun-Li since childhood and understood that fans would judge whether the performance respected the character they knew from the games, manga and anime.

What the Reddit reaction reportedly said
A GamersExtra report said Liang encountered a Reddit thread questioning whether her thighs could match Chun-Li’s famously muscular proportions. That detail should be treated as a reported online reaction, not as a measurement of overall audience opinion: no representative survey or reliable statistic establishes how widely that view was held.
The report is also less directly verifiable than Liang’s interview comments. The GamersExtra page was available in search results but could not be retrieved for full-text confirmation. The central point remains supported by Liang’s own statements: she felt responsible for honoring a beloved character and knew fans would scrutinize the result.
How Liang prepared Chun-Li’s physique
Liang’s preparation was compressed into roughly two and a half to three months between casting and filming. She said she trained every day, combined gym work with fight practice and weightlifting, and studied Chun-Li across the game series, manga and anime.

The reported physical changes
- GamesRadar+ reported that Liang’s thigh measurement increased by more than 6.5 centimeters during preparation.
- CNA reported that she gained about 20 pounds (9 kilograms) in approximately a month and a half.
- She reportedly trained for two hours in the morning and two hours in the afternoon.
- Liang said she ate around 4,000 calories per day; CNA additionally reported meals every couple of hours and 12 eggs a day.
Those figures describe an unusually intensive film-training schedule, not a general fitness prescription. A rapid weight change and high-calorie diet should be understood in the context of a supervised performance goal rather than copied as a standalone plan.
Making the fighting style recognizable
The production’s challenge was not only visual. Philstar reported that the fight design drew on Wu Shu, Tai Chi and Kung fu while preserving recognizable moves from the games. That creates a practical balance: the choreography must work for live-action performers and cameras, yet still communicate the attacks players associate with Chun-Li.
Jon Valera, quoted by Philstar, described the responsibility through what he called “the Bruce Lee effect,” saying martial artists regard certain works as almost sacred. He added that the Street Fighter job’s significance made him work harder rather than avoid it.

What fans can reasonably evaluate
When the film arrives, Chun-Li’s success can be judged on three separate questions rather than on a single resemblance test.
Fidelity to the game design
Costume, silhouette, hair, movement and signature attacks need to signal Chun-Li without reducing her to a collection of visual references.
Physical and martial-arts credibility
Liang’s reported training and increased leg strength address the character’s powerful proportions, while the Wu Shu, Tai Chi and Kung fu influences provide a basis for readable, physically grounded action.

A human interpretation
A live-action performance cannot literally reproduce an animation model. The strongest interpretation will preserve Chun-Li’s identity while allowing Liang to play a believable person rather than imitate every frame of a game character.

Yes. Capcom’s September 5, 2025 production announcement named Callina Liang as Chun-Li in the live-action Street Fighter film and gave the movie an October 16, 2026 release date. The casting is therefore official, while the Reddit discussion concerns expectations surrounding that confirmed role.

How the film connects to the games
Chun-Li’s screen version is being built from several parts of the franchise: her established game moves, the broader visual language seen in the manga and anime, and live-action martial-arts choreography. Players who want the clearest current reference for the character can look to Street Fighter 6 on PlayStation 5, which Capcom listed in the same official release material identifying Liang’s casting. No authorized physical movie release or collectible listing for the 2026 film has been confirmed here.
Why the comments matter before release
Liang’s remarks show that the pressure was both personal and practical. She entered the role as a longtime fan, had only a short preparation window, and faced public discussion about whether her body could match an iconic design. Her response was to train daily, study the source material and commit to the production without holding back.
“It’s made by fans, for fans,” Liang told GamesRadar+, adding that she wanted to give the role everything and have no regrets. That ambition sets an expectation for the film, but it does not prove how audiences will respond. The final judgment will depend on the finished performance, choreography and story when the movie is released on October 16, 2026.
