What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When a YouTube stream drops from a spare PC, first determine whether the fault is visible in the encoder’s output or only between the PC and YouTube. Check the encoder preview and local recording, then test outbound upload and network stability, and finally verify YouTube’s stream URL, stream key, and encoder settings. A spare PC is not automatically the cause; the error messages and a controlled test can help isolate it.
1. Record what happened before changing settings
Write down the time and duration of each disconnect, the exact encoder error, and any stream-health message in YouTube Live Control Room. Note whether the encoder says it is still sending and whether viewers lost the stream at the same time. Keep the local recording if one exists. Change one setting at a time so each test can help identify the cause.
2. Decide whether the fault is local or on the way to YouTube
Inspect the encoder and local recording
- Update the encoder software to its current version.
- Watch the encoder’s own preview or output. If audio or video is already faulty there, inspect the input sources, audio and video routing, encoder error messages, and CPU load.
- Review the local archive. If it has the same glitches as the stream, investigate the PC, capture devices, sources, or encoder configuration first.
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the encoder output, CPU load, local archive, and outbound connection: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream. It does not specify a universal CPU threshold for a spare PC. Look for load spikes that coincide with errors or dropped frames rather than relying on an invented cutoff.
Move to the network branch if local output is clean
If the encoder preview and local recording look healthy but YouTube reports a problem, focus next on outbound connectivity and ingest settings. YouTube notes, “There may be an issue with your outbound internet connection.”

3. Test upload capacity and connection stability
Run an upload speed test from the spare PC using the same network connection planned for the stream. Download speed does not show whether the connection can send the stream reliably. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; if a backup encoder is sending at the same time, allow for both the primary and backup stream bitrates. Other devices or people sharing the connection can consume capacity.
YouTube warns, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” If upload results vary or disconnect timestamps align with network interruptions, pause other large uploads and repeat the test at another time. As a diagnostic comparison—not a specific YouTube requirement—you can compare the usual connection with a wired connection if the PC and router support one. If testing points to a connection fault, YouTube advises contacting your internet service provider. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

A speed test is only a snapshot. Repeat it and compare its results with encoder errors and YouTube stream-health messages. The cited guidance does not set a packet-loss threshold, so do not treat one speed-test result as proof that brief interruptions are absent.
4. Match encoder settings to the connection and stream
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends choosing settings that the available connection can sustain, testing with representative audio and movement, and monitoring stream health. For RTMP/RTMPS streams, it lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); AAC or MP3 audio; and a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

The following bitrates are from YouTube Help’s current guidance, accessed 2026-10-03. They are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection or PC can sustain the stream.
| Resolution and frame rate | AV1/H.265 minimum | AV1/H.265 recommended | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2160p at 60 fps | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 30 Mbps | 11 Mbps | 42 Mbps |

| 360p at 30 fps | 0.3 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
If the spare PC struggles to encode the selected resolution, frame rate, or codec smoothly, lower the workload and repeat a representative test. Check whether CPU-load spikes or encoder errors occur at the same time. The guidance does not establish a specific hardware threshold or mean that a hardware upgrade is necessarily needed.

5. Verify YouTube’s stream key, URL, and RTMPS settings
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and check the stream URL and stream key for the event.
- Compare those values with the server URL and key entered in the encoder. The stream key is the credential the encoder uses to send the feed to YouTube.
- If an encoder error suggests a key problem, retrieve the current key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. YouTube explains stream keys and URL management in Manage live stream settings.
For an RTMPS timeout, confirm that the encoder is using the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and supports RTMPS; do not assume the ordinary RTMP URL is interchangeable. YouTube says port 443 may be specified for certain SSL errors when the URL and encoder settings allow it. Apply that only when troubleshooting a matching SSL error, not as a general remedy for disconnects. See Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
6. Rehearse before the real stream
- Set up a private or unlisted test with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast.
- Check the preview before starting, then monitor YouTube stream health and the encoder’s output.
- Watch whether the local archive continues recording and whether errors align with any network or CPU changes.
- YouTube’s computer-streaming tips recommend setting up encoders at least two hours before the event and starting them at least 15 minutes beforehand.
If you have configured backup-encoder failover, YouTube describes testing it by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable. Use this only as a planned test, not during an important live broadcast. See YouTube live streaming tips for computers.
