Yes. A bouncing logo is less risky than a logo that never moves, but it does not make an OLED immune to burn-in. Every bright, repeated logo can wear the same group of OLED pixels unevenly over time. LCD panels are much less prone to permanent burn-in, although some can show temporary image retention after a static picture remains on screen for many hours.
For an OLED gaming display, treat a moving screensaver as one layer of protection—not a guarantee. The safer combination is a short display-off timeout, moderate brightness, varied content, and the panel’s own pixel-shift, logo-dimming, and refresh features.

Why a logo can leave a lasting mark on an OLED
OLED pixels produce their own light. Each pixel’s organic emitting material gradually loses output as it accumulates use. If one area displays a bright logo far more often than the rest of the panel, those pixels age faster. The difference in wear can remain visible as a faint shape when you switch to a game, video, or solid-color test screen. That uneven aging is what people generally mean by OLED burn-in.
The important word is cumulative. A logo does not need to stay frozen in exactly one place during one session to create risk. Repeated exposure adds to the same pixels’ lifetime usage. Bright white graphics, high-contrast channel marks, scoreboards, and game HUD elements are harder on a panel than dim, low-contrast imagery because they drive the affected pixels harder.

LG USA support describes image retention, commonly called burn-in, as a problem caused by leaving a static image on a screen too long. Sony similarly warns that an OLED can retain an image when it is displayed continuously for long periods or when the same image is shown repeatedly. Those warnings cover both a fixed logo and a logo that returns to the same screen area over and over.
Does moving the logo prevent burn-in?
No. Motion reduces the concentration of wear, but it does not eliminate it. A bouncing logo spends less time on any one pixel than a stationary logo, so the damage is distributed over a larger area. That is a meaningful improvement, especially when the logo is small and dim. However, the logo still lights pixels repeatedly, and its path may cover the same bands or corners many times.
RTINGS’ long-term OLED test demonstrates the limitation. The test ran televisions for 20 hours per day, seven days per week, for about two years, with some screens showing static material and others cycling through different logos and content. Static elements produced obvious burn-in, but even cycled logos eventually caused visible cumulative wear under that extreme schedule. The results, published from the 2017–2019 experiment and updated in 2020, do not establish a universal number of hours at which every OLED will burn in. They do show that movement is mitigation, not immunity.

- Duty cycle: A logo shown for a few minutes during idle periods is less stressful than one displayed whenever the monitor is on.
- Path and size: A logo that traverses a wide area spreads wear more than one that repeatedly hits the same corner, but a larger path also exposes more pixels.
- Heat and ventilation: Higher operating temperatures can increase stress on display components. Keep vents clear and avoid enclosing the panel in a way that traps heat.
- Panel generation and controls: OLED compensation algorithms, pixel shift, logo dimming, and brightness limits differ by model.
OLED versus LCD: what kind of “burn-in” is possible?
| Aspect | OLED | LCD |
|---|---|---|
| Typical failure mechanism | Uneven, cumulative wear of self-emitting pixels | Temporary image retention on some panels; permanent burn-in is uncommon |
| Effect of a moving logo | Reduces time spent on each pixel but cannot stop repeated wear | Usually lowers the chance of retention by changing the displayed pattern |
| Persistence | Permanent wear remains visible across different content | Retention often fades after the image changes; behavior varies by model |
| Long-term test evidence | RTINGS observed burn-in from static material and eventually from cycled logos under 20-hours-per-day use for about two years | RTINGS reported no burn-in on the VA and IPS LCD televisions in its long-term test |
| Documented manufacturer caution | LG and Sony warn that continuous or repeated images can cause retention | Dell advises avoiding one unchanged static screen for more than 12 hours on specified Latitude 7320 and 7350 Detachable LCD models |
LCDs use a backlight behind liquid-crystal shutters, so they do not age in exactly the same pixel-by-pixel way as OLEDs. RTINGS found no burn-in on the VA and IPS LCD televisions it tested. That does not mean every LCD is incapable of image retention. Dell’s guidance for the Latitude 7320 and 7350 Detachable says not to keep one static screen unchanged for over 12 hours at a time. The statement applies to those specified models, not to every LCD monitor or television.
Temporary image retention is not permanent burn-in
These terms describe different outcomes:
- Temporary retention: A ghost of the previous image remains briefly after the content changes. RTINGS says this normally fades within seconds or minutes.
- Permanent burn-in or permanent image retention: Uneven panel wear remains visible across other content and does not disappear after the display rests or changes input.
If a logo disappears after a few minutes of varied video, you are seeing temporary retention rather than established permanent wear. If the shape is still visible on a full-screen gray, white, or color test after repeated normal use, the panel may have permanent uneven wear. Do not repeatedly run aggressive manual refresh cycles in an attempt to erase a mark; use the manufacturer’s procedure and service guidance for your model.
How to configure an OLED gaming display safely
Menu names differ by television, monitor, firmware, and region, but the following sequence works as a practical checklist.
- Set a short inactivity timeout. Use the operating system or console setting that turns the display off or puts it to sleep. A screen-off action is safer than leaving a logo moving indefinitely because it stops light output altogether. Choose the shortest delay that does not interrupt normal breaks in your gaming routine.
- Enable the built-in screen saver. On supported LG televisions, the documented scenario activates the screen saver after approximately two minutes of inactivity. Your model may use a different interval or label, so verify the behavior after saving the setting.
- Turn on pixel shift or screen move. This subtly changes the position of the complete image so a static edge or logo does not hit precisely the same pixels. It may make the picture move by a few pixels; that is normal.
- Leave logo-luminance or static-logo dimming enabled. These controls detect bright, persistent marks and lower their output. They can make a game HUD or channel logo look dimmer, but disabling them removes a protection designed for exactly this exposure pattern.
- Use moderate brightness for idle graphics. If your screensaver allows color or brightness choices, select a dim logo rather than a bright white one. Lowering OLED light output during long menus and idle screens reduces cumulative stress.
- Allow automatic compensation cycles to complete. LG documents an automatic pixel-cleaning cycle after four cumulative hours on supported OLED televisions, plus a longer pixel-refresher cycle after 2,000 cumulative hours. The exact names and timing vary by model. When the television asks to run a maintenance cycle after shutdown, do not disconnect power immediately; let it finish.
- Vary what remains on screen. Rotate games, menus, videos, and desktop layouts instead of leaving the same scoreboard or title screen up for every break. Variation changes which pixels receive the most exposure.
- Keep the panel cool and unobstructed. Follow the manufacturer’s ventilation clearance guidance, especially in a cabinet or near a heat-producing console.
A bouncing logo can still be used after these settings are in place, but it should be the fallback for a short idle period rather than the display’s permanent daytime content.

What to do on an LCD monitor or television
An LCD generally tolerates static game menus and desktop elements better than OLED, yet a screen-off timer remains the simplest precaution. Set the monitor or console to sleep when nobody is using it, and use a moving screensaver if the device must remain awake for downloads or background tasks.
If an LCD shows a ghost image, switch to varied full-screen video or a neutral solid-color pattern for several minutes. Lowering brightness and improving airflow are sensible while you observe whether the mark fades. A mark that remains after normal content changes may require the panel manufacturer’s support process, because retention behavior is model-specific.
Do not apply Dell’s “over 12 hours” warning to every LCD as a universal limit. It is documented for the Latitude 7320 and 7350 Detachable LCD models. Other panels may have different tolerances, and the absence of a stated threshold is not proof that static content is harmless.

Check the exposure pattern
Ask how often the logo appears, how bright it is, how large it is, and whether it repeatedly crosses the same region. A logo that appears only during short breaks and is followed by automatic sleep creates far less exposure than one that runs for every overnight download.

Look for temporary retention first
After the logo disappears, display varied moving content for several minutes. If the outline fades quickly, it is temporary retention. Avoid judging the panel immediately after a long static session, when a temporary ghost is most likely to be visible.
Use a neutral test image
For a more consistent check, view full-screen gray, white, red, green, and blue images at a moderate brightness. Compare the suspected area with the rest of the panel. Permanent wear tends to remain visible across multiple colors; a short-lived ghost usually becomes less distinct as the panel displays different material.
Check protection settings before changing hardware
Confirm that pixel shift, logo dimming, automatic screen saver, and compensation cycles are enabled. Firmware updates can change menu locations or add controls, so consult the support page for the exact model rather than assuming another television’s labels apply.

Common mistakes that increase risk
- Assuming movement makes a display safe: A moving logo still produces repeated light output.
- Running maximum brightness during idle time: Brightness multiplies the stress of long exposure.
- Disabling logo dimming because the HUD looks different: The dimming is a protection feature, not a defect.
- Unplugging immediately after every shutdown: Some OLED maintenance cycles run after the panel is turned off.
- Using a screen-cleaning product as a “burn-in cure”: Cleaning the surface cannot reverse uneven pixel wear.
- Treating temporary retention as proof of permanent damage: First see whether the mark fades within seconds or minutes of varied content.
- Leaving a game menu or desktop open overnight: A screen saver that never turns the panel off still exposes it for the entire idle period.
Choosing between OLED and LCD for a gaming setup
OLED is attractive when you want self-emissive pixels, deep blacks, and fast response, but you must manage repeated static elements. If your routine includes long sessions of one game with a fixed HUD, frequent pause screens, or a desktop left visible for hours, use the panel’s protections and make display-off behavior part of your setup.

LCD is the lower-maintenance choice for workloads dominated by static interfaces. It is not completely immune to retention, and individual models differ, but permanent OLED-style burn-in is uncommon in the available long-term comparison. For either technology, a short sleep timeout protects the panel better than relying on a decorative logo that continues to illuminate pixels.
Bottom line for a bouncing logo screensaver
A bouncing logo is safer than a fixed logo because it spreads exposure, but it cannot guarantee that an OLED will avoid burn-in. Repeated bright logos can still create cumulative uneven wear, particularly when the display runs for many hours every day. LCDs are far less likely to suffer permanent burn-in, although prolonged static images can produce temporary retention and some models have specific cautions.
Use movement as a partial mitigation, then reduce the exposure itself: set a short screen-off timeout, keep idle graphics dim, vary content, and leave pixel shift, logo dimming, and automatic panel-refresh features enabled. That combination addresses both the physics of OLED wear and the model-specific retention behavior found on LCD panels.
