Can a Cheap Samsung Gaming Monitor Run GTA VI at 120Hz?

It may display a 120Hz signal, but that does not prove GTA VI will render at 120 frames per second. Rockstar Games lists Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a November 19, 2026 release date. The official game page does not state a 120Hz mode, a 120fps target, a resolution, or a performance-mode specification.

A budget Samsung gaming monitor can therefore be a sensible 120Hz display for a console, but its actual result depends on the exact model, HDMI bandwidth, resolution, variable refresh rate (VRR), HDR support, cable and the mode Rockstar eventually ships. Treat 120Hz as display capacity and potential headroom—not as a promise that GTA VI will run at 120fps.

What Rockstar has—and has not—confirmed

Rockstar’s official Grand Theft Auto VI listing names PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as the launch platforms and gives November 19, 2026 as the release date. It labels PlayStation 5 as “Plays Best On.” The page checked on October 18, 2026 contains no published frame-rate target, refresh-rate target, output resolution, 120Hz option or performance-mode description.

That means every claim that GTA VI will run at 120fps is speculation until Rockstar documents it or the released game demonstrates it. A monitor cannot create extra frames. If the game engine outputs 30, 60 or another frame rate, a 120Hz panel can only show those frames according to the console’s output timing.

Refresh rate and frame rate are different

Refresh rate is a monitor limit

A monitor’s 120Hz, 144Hz or 165Hz figure describes how often its panel can refresh. A 120Hz display refreshes up to 120 times per second, assuming the input signal and selected resolution support that rate. The number is a ceiling for the display, not a measurement of the game’s rendering speed.

Frame rate comes from the game and console

Frame rate is how many finished images the game produces each second. The PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S must render GTA VI at the requested resolution and graphical settings before the monitor can show those frames. A 120Hz screen can present a 60fps signal cleanly, but it will not turn 60fps into native 120fps. Repeated refreshes may show the same frame, while VRR can match refresh timing more closely to an uneven frame rate.

Why the distinction matters for GTA VI

GTA VI is an unreleased, technically demanding open-world game. Rockstar has not published enough performance information to know whether its console modes will prioritize image quality, a higher frame rate, ray-traced effects or some other trade-off. Buying a 120Hz monitor solely because you expect 120fps GTA VI is therefore a risk; buying one for broader PS5 or Xbox use can still make sense.

What the PS5 can output at 120Hz

Sony’s current PlayStation 5 support documentation says the console supports HDMI 2.1 and 4K 120Hz video output. The PS5 includes a 120 Hz Output setting that enables 120Hz output for a compatible television or monitor and for games that support a 120Hz frame rate.

In practice, three parts of the signal chain must agree: the console’s selected output, the monitor’s input and the cable between them. Sony advises using the cable included with the PS5 or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, connecting directly to the appropriate HDMI 2.1 port, and checking the display’s firmware and settings if 4K/120Hz is not detected. A monitor advertised as “144Hz” can still be limited to lower refresh rates over its HDMI input, so the model’s manual matters more than the headline number.

Why the exact Samsung model matters

“Cheap Samsung gaming monitor” is not a specification. Samsung sells models with different panel resolutions, HDMI versions, refresh-rate limits, HDR implementations and VRR behavior. Two monitors with similar prices or a 144Hz label can behave very differently when connected to a console.

Specification to verify Why it matters for a console What is established
Native resolution Determines whether you are targeting 1080p, 1440p or 4K and how much bandwidth is required. PS5 supports 4K 120Hz when the display, port and cable support the complete chain.
HDMI input standard and bandwidth Controls which resolution-and-refresh combinations are accepted. A high PC refresh rate may not be available through HDMI. Samsung directs users to the designated gaming HDMI port for 4K at 120Hz or 144Hz on compatible displays.
Console signal support Some monitors accept a timing from a PC but reject the equivalent PS5 or Xbox signal. The exact model’s manual or support page is the authority; a generic 144Hz claim is insufficient.
VRR Synchronizes refresh timing with changing frame rates and can reduce tearing. Independent testing finds VRR useful on consoles; some HDMI 2.0 monitors support PS5 VRR.
HDR Expands supported brightness and color range when the game and monitor implement it well. Console compatibility testing commonly checks HDR alongside 60Hz and 120Hz modes.
Firmware and on-screen settings Outdated firmware or a disabled gaming mode can prevent the expected signal. Sony and Samsung both direct users to verify display settings when high-refresh detection fails.

1080p, 1440p and 4K: choose the target first

1080p at 120Hz

1080p/120Hz is the least demanding of the common targets. It can be appropriate for a smaller, inexpensive monitor and leaves substantial HDMI bandwidth headroom. It still requires GTA VI and the console to offer a 120Hz-compatible mode; the monitor alone cannot supply it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1440p at 120Hz

1440p/120Hz is a middle ground. It is sharper than 1080p while generally asking less of the connection than 4K/120Hz. Confirm that the monitor explicitly accepts 1440p from your console. Console support for 1440p output and the monitor’s scaling behavior vary by model, so do not infer compatibility from a PC specification sheet.

4K at 120Hz

4K/120Hz is the most demanding combination in this comparison. Sony identifies HDMI 2.1 and an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable as relevant to the PS5’s 4K 120Hz path. The monitor must also provide a suitable HDMI 2.1 input and document that exact signal. A monitor with HDMI 2.0 may still be useful at lower resolutions or refresh rates, but it should not be assumed to deliver 4K/120Hz.

VRR and HDR are often more useful than a high headline number

Variable refresh rate

VRR lets the display adjust its refresh timing as the console’s frame delivery changes, reducing visible tearing and some judder. RTINGS’ console compatibility framework tests 1080p, 1440p and 4K at 60Hz and 120Hz, including HDR and VRR. It reports that most monitors work with PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, that HDMI 2.1 bandwidth can be needed for 4K signals up to 120Hz, and that Xbox supports FreeSync. It also notes that some HDMI 2.0 monitors can support PS5 VRR.

Those findings are a reason to check the exact VRR range and console behavior rather than simply buying the monitor with the highest refresh-rate label. VRR cannot increase the game’s maximum frame rate; it helps the display follow the frames the console actually produces.

High dynamic range

HDR is separate from refresh rate. A monitor may accept 120Hz while offering limited HDR brightness or no useful HDR mode. If image contrast and highlights matter to you, verify whether the model supports HDR from the console at your chosen resolution and refresh rate, and whether enabling HDR changes the available timing.

How to verify a Samsung monitor before buying

  1. Write down the full model number. The product family name is not enough; regional variants can use different ports or firmware.
  2. Set your target signal. Decide whether you need 1080p/120Hz, 1440p/120Hz or 4K/120Hz. Do not compare an advertised PC refresh rate with a console result until the resolution is included.
  3. Read the HDMI specifications. Look for the input’s version, bandwidth and a table of supported console timings. Check whether the high-speed port is a particular HDMI socket.
  4. Check VRR and HDR entries. Confirm that they work over HDMI, not only through DisplayPort, and note any resolution or refresh restrictions.
  5. Check firmware and gaming-mode instructions. Samsung says compatible displays can detect PS5 and Xbox consoles and directs users to the designated HDMI port marked for gaming for 4K at 120Hz or 144Hz.
  6. Confirm return or exchange terms. If the manual does not list your console timing, a practical test may be the only way to verify it, so a return option reduces risk.

PS5 setup for a compatible 120Hz display

  1. Connect the PS5 directly to the monitor’s documented high-bandwidth HDMI input. Avoid a receiver, switch or capture device while diagnosing the signal.
  2. Use the PS5 cable or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable when pursuing 4K/120Hz, as Sony recommends.
  3. On the PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Review the resolution, 120 Hz Output and VRR options. Select automatic settings first, then choose a supported resolution if the monitor’s manual requires it.
  4. Enable the monitor’s Game Mode or equivalent gaming setting and select the HDMI input identified for high-refresh operation.
  5. Check the PS5 video-output information screen to see whether the console detects 120Hz, VRR and HDR. If 120Hz is absent, test the other HDMI input only if the manual identifies it as compatible; do not assume every port has equal bandwidth.
  6. Update the monitor firmware if Samsung provides an applicable update, then power-cycle the monitor and PS5 and check detection again.

Xbox Series X|S considerations

GTA VI is also listed for Xbox Series X|S. The same principle applies: the console, game mode, monitor input and cable must support the chosen timing. Xbox supports FreeSync on compatible displays, according to RTINGS’ compatibility framework. Check the monitor’s Xbox signal table and the console’s video settings rather than transferring a PS5 result directly to Xbox. A model that accepts 1440p/120Hz on one console may expose different options on the other.

Troubleshooting when 120Hz does not appear

The monitor shows 60Hz only

  • Verify that you are using the HDMI port specified for high-refresh or gaming use.
  • Check the selected resolution. The monitor may support 120Hz at 1080p but not at 4K.
  • Replace an unverified cable with the PS5 cable or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for a 4K/120Hz test.
  • Turn off intermediaries such as HDMI switches, receivers and capture cards.

The screen goes black or reports no signal

  • Return the console to automatic video output or a lower resolution, then retest the documented mode.
  • Confirm the monitor firmware and input source.
  • Check the model’s supported-signal table; a PC timing is not proof of console support.

There is tearing or uneven motion

  • Enable VRR on both the console and monitor if the model supports it over HDMI.
  • Check the monitor’s stated VRR range and whether HDR or a particular resolution disables VRR.
  • Remember that VRR smooths frame delivery but does not turn a 60fps game into a 120fps game.

Should you pay extra for 120Hz?

Paying for 120Hz can be justified if you also play other console or PC games that support higher frame rates, want smoother dashboard and camera motion, or plan to keep the monitor through several games. It is not justified as a guaranteed GTA VI 120fps purchase: Rockstar has published no such mode.

For GTA VI specifically, prioritize a monitor that clearly supports your console’s target resolution, has the correct HDMI bandwidth, and offers VRR if smoothness during variable frame rates matters to you. HDR is a separate image-quality decision. A well-documented 1080p or 1440p model may be a safer budget choice than an inexpensive monitor whose 144Hz figure applies only through DisplayPort.

A practical buying checklist

  • Exact Samsung model number identified.
  • Target resolution chosen: 1080p, 1440p or 4K.
  • HDMI input bandwidth confirmed for that resolution at 120Hz.
  • PS5 or Xbox Series X|S signal support documented.
  • VRR support and HDMI VRR range checked.
  • HDR behavior verified for the chosen mode.
  • High-speed HDMI port and cable identified.
  • Firmware and Game Mode requirements understood.
  • Purchase is not based on an unconfirmed GTA VI 120fps assumption.

Verdict

A cheap Samsung gaming monitor can be ready for a 120Hz console signal, but whether it is a good GTA VI display depends on its exact HDMI and console compatibility—not the word “gaming” or a 144Hz badge. PS5 hardware supports 4K 120Hz when every part of the chain supports it, yet Rockstar has not promised that GTA VI will render at 120fps. Choose the documented resolution and features you need today, use the correct port and cable, and treat 120Hz as future-proofing rather than a confirmed GTA VI performance mode.
