A cloud service can keep a YouTube stream running after you turn off your PC, provided the encoder runs in the cloud and can access the video or live feed it needs to send. What has to keep running when your PC is off?
YouTube receives a live stream from an encoder. If the encoder is on your home PC, turning that PC off ends its contribution. If the encoder runs on a cloud VM or VPS, it can keep sending video while your local computer is off. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key; it does not prescribe or certify a particular cloud setup. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain the connection process.
- Prerecorded or looped video: The video must be stored somewhere the cloud encoder can access, and the encoder or service must be configured to repeat or schedule it.
- Live camera or microphone: The live input must reach the cloud host through a suitable network feed or remote capture workflow. If the only camera or microphone is attached to your home PC, turning that PC off removes the source too.
Cloud hosting solves the need to keep a local computer running; it does not by itself provide a video source, configure a loop, or guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast.
Check YouTube eligibility before setting up
YouTube’s current live-streaming guidance says the channel must be verified, must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Review YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements before planning a launch.

Choose how the cloud will run the stream
Use a managed looping service for uploaded videos
If your goal is to keep prerecorded videos playing as a YouTube live stream, a managed service avoids setting up and administering a VM and encoder yourself. Run an encoder on a VM or VPS
A self-managed cloud machine gives you control over the operating system and encoder, but you are responsible for making the media accessible, configuring repeat or scheduling behavior, maintaining the machine, and recovering the stream if it stops. AWS describes Lightsail instances as VPSs; Google Cloud lists Compute Engine regions in Mumbai and Delhi. These are examples of hosting options, not guarantees that a particular instance can encode your chosen video or sustain your stream.

Compare providers on the actual workload and location, not just the region name. Check compute capacity and any hardware-encoding needs, sustained outbound bandwidth, storage, transfer allowances and excess-transfer charges, restart and reconnect behavior, and the administrative work you are willing to do. A nearby India region may be relevant to latency, but its availability alone does not establish performance or reliability for your stream.
Provider terms differ and can change. AWS’s Lightsail pricing page describes bundles that include compute, memory, storage, and transfer, and notes that Mumbai bundles include half the transfer allowance shown for other listed regions. Google Cloud lists Mumbai (asia-south1) and Delhi (asia-south2) for general-purpose VMs; its network pricing page says VM-to-Google-services transfer, including YouTube, is not charged under the stated pricing. Check the current regional terms and your expected costs before choosing: AWS Lightsail pricing and Google Cloud VM and region pricing, plus Google Cloud network pricing.

Set up a self-managed cloud encoder
- Confirm your channel is eligible. Verify the channel and check that it has no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. YouTube says live streamers must be at least 16. Use the eligibility page before scheduling the broadcast.
- Choose and configure the cloud host. Select a VM or VPS that can handle your encoder and video workload, with storage for the media and enough sustained outbound capacity. If the video is on your home PC, upload it or otherwise make it accessible to the cloud machine before shutting that PC down.
- Configure the encoder and source. Set the encoder to use the accessible video or incoming live feed. For prerecorded material, configure the software to loop or schedule the files; the YouTube instructions cover connecting an encoder, not how to configure a particular looping application.
- Create or open the stream in YouTube Studio. In Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy its server URL and stream key into the encoder. Start the encoder, wait for the preview, check stream health, and then go live. Follow YouTube’s encoder workflow and YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Test unattended recovery. Check the preview and stream health before relying on the setup. Plan how the encoder or service will reconnect after a process, machine, or network interruption, and how you will notice a failure when you are away.
Bandwidth, stream keys, archives, and content rights
Leave upload headroom
YouTube says the total streaming bitrate must not exceed the available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% extra room. A cloud host’s sustained outbound route to YouTube matters just as much as the encoder’s selected bitrate; a listed data allowance or nearby region does not prove that the route will remain stable. YouTube warns that network interruptions can break a stream. See its streaming tips.
Protect the stream key
Treat the stream key as a credential: it tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Do not expose it in public logs, screenshots, or shared configuration. If it is compromised, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the replacement. Details are in YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.

Do not assume a 24-hour event will be archived
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its encoder setup instructions do not promise automatic archiving for a stream lasting 12 hours or longer. If keeping an archive matters, consider shorter events and verify the result in YouTube Studio rather than relying on a continuous 24-hour broadcast to produce one.
Use content you have the right to stream
A 24/7 loop still has to comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and applicable rights requirements. Make sure you have the necessary rights to all video, music, and other material in the broadcast. Read YouTube’s terms and check the copyright safety checklist before putting a playlist on repeat.

Troubleshooting a cloud stream
- YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: Confirm the encoder is using the current server URL and stream key for the selected stream. If the key may have been exposed or reset, replace it in the encoder.
- The stream drops or becomes unstable: Check the cloud host’s sustained outbound capacity against the total bitrate, leaving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Inspect provider network limits and the encoder or service’s reconnect behavior.
- The video stops when the home PC is shut down: The encoder or media source is likely still local. Move the media to storage accessible by the cloud encoder, or establish a way to deliver the live input to the cloud.
- The VM runs but cannot keep up: Recheck the machine’s CPU or hardware-encoding capacity for the selected workload and the storage and transfer terms. A provider’s regional listing is not a workload-performance guarantee.
- No archive appears after a long broadcast: Do not assume a stream of 12 hours or more will be automatically archived; check Studio and use shorter events if an automatic archive is important.
