Yes—you can use an AWS Lightsail VPS to send a prerecorded video to YouTube Live. The VPS runs playback and encoding software, which pushes a continuous live signal to YouTube over RTMPS. Uploading a video to YouTube is a different process: a live stream requires an encoder connection and a YouTube stream key.
This guide explains the account, server, network, encoder, and testing steps. The exact software command and Lightsail size depend on your video and workload; the official documentation does not certify a particular FFmpeg command or instance size for this setup.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Its Help page also states a minimum age of 16. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility requirements.
- An AWS account and a Linux/Unix Lightsail instance with enough CPU, memory, disk space, and sustained outbound bandwidth for your chosen playback and encoding workflow.
- A video file accessible to the instance, plus software that can read it and send a live encoder output to YouTube.
- A YouTube Live Control Room event and its stream key. Treat the key like a password; do not put it in public scripts, logs, or screenshots.
For a video-game channel, confirm that you have the rights needed for the gameplay footage, music, commentary, and other material in the recording. How to stream a prerecorded video on YouTube Live from Lightsail
1. Create the YouTube live event
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream and select the available encoder workflow.
- Choose the ingest protocol and copy the server URL and stream key shown for the event. Prefer RTMPS when supported. Keep the key secret.
- Set the event visibility and schedule as appropriate. YouTube recommends preparing ahead of time, previewing the incoming signal, checking stream health, and monitoring audio and video. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
2. Launch a Lightsail instance suited to the workload
Choose a Linux/Unix plan based on what the software must do. Reading a compatible video and passing its streams through is generally less CPU-intensive than decoding and real-time transcoding, but actual performance depends on the file, output settings, software, and instance. There is no official Lightsail sizing benchmark for this particular workload, so do not assume a small plan can encode a specific resolution or frame rate.

Check the current Lightsail bundles and pricing before choosing. Lightsail bundles include compute, memory, storage, and a data-transfer allowance; billing is hourly up to the plan’s maximum monthly charge. Plan specifications, prices, and allowances can change and may vary by region or address type.
Before going live, confirm that the video is present and readable, there is enough disk space, and the instance has CPU and memory headroom. Measure sustained network upload under the intended load rather than relying only on a brief speed test.

3. Keep the firewall focused on what the VPS needs
For this architecture, the VPS initiates an outbound connection to YouTube’s RTMPS ingest server. You do not need to open an inbound RTMP port for YouTube to receive the stream. Lightsail allows outbound traffic; its instance firewall governs inbound public-IP traffic. Keep SSH access limited to trusted source addresses, and manage IPv4 and IPv6 firewall rules separately. A static IPv4 address is useful when another service or workflow needs to reach the instance at a stable address. A default public IPv4 can change after an instance is stopped and started. A static address is not inherently required for the VPS’s outbound YouTube ingest connection. Details are in Lightsail’s static IP guidance.

4. Configure the playback and encoder workflow
Install or configure software that reads the file and emits a live stream to the YouTube endpoint and key. FFmpeg is one possible software choice, but the sources for this guide do not verify a specific FFmpeg command, loop flag, scheduler, or Lightsail setup. Validate your chosen command and behavior with a private or unlisted test before relying on it.
For RTMPS, use the exact ingestion address and application path supplied by YouTube or its API. Google’s documentation specifies port 443, TLS, and a TLS server-name indication (SNI) that matches the hostname. If you use the YouTube Live Streaming API, its LiveStreams resource exposes RTMP and RTMPS primary ingestion addresses and may provide backup addresses. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate recommendations for the resolution and frame rate you intend to send. YouTube recommends H.264 for RTMP/RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval, with an interval no longer than four seconds. Match output aspect ratio and frame rate to the source where practical. There is no single bitrate that suits every output: use the bitrate table for your selected resolution and frame rate. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream into formats for viewers.
5. Test the complete path and monitor it
- Start with a private or unlisted test event if that fits your channel and workflow.
- Start the software on Lightsail and wait for the Live Control Room preview to show the incoming signal.
- Check video, audio, motion, and the stream-health notices in YouTube. Watch CPU, memory, disk, and network use on the VPS as well.
- Confirm the video behaves as intended at its end. If you need continuous programming, test that your playback or scheduling setup continues rather than stopping when the file finishes; YouTube’s general tips do not prescribe how software should loop or schedule files.
Bandwidth, cost, and capacity to plan for
Estimate transfer from the stream bitrate
A live stream consumes outbound data for as long as it runs. As a rough planning method, multiply the total outgoing bitrate in megabits per second by the broadcast duration in seconds, then convert megabits to gigabytes (divide by 8,000 for decimal GB). For example, a 6 Mbps stream running for 24 hours sends roughly 64.8 GB of video data before protocol overhead. This is an estimate, not a Lightsail bill calculation; include repeated broadcasts and other instance traffic, and compare the result with the current allowance for your region and plan.

Both inbound and outbound transfer count toward the plan allowance. Qualifying excess outbound traffic to the internet or public IP can incur region-dependent charges after the allowance. AWS’s current FAQ lists $0.09/GB for US East (Ohio and N. Virginia) and US West (Oregon); this is a regional rate, not a universal rate. Check the Lightsail FAQ and the plan table for current terms before estimating recurring costs.
Choose between pass-through and real-time transcoding
- Compatible source: Passing through or remuxing compatible audio and video may need less CPU than re-encoding. Confirm the output still meets YouTube’s current ingest settings.
- Transcoding: Changing codec, resolution, frame rate, or bitrate in real time raises compute demand. Test on the chosen instance under sustained load; there is no official workload-specific benchmark to guarantee a plan size.
- Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS as a secure RTMP option for ordinary live content. HLS or DASH may suit other use cases, but they are not needed for the straightforward VPS encoder path described here.
Troubleshooting a Lightsail-to-YouTube stream
