Yes, conditionally. A custom dashboard can change how you launch and manage a PS Vita, but replacing the interface is not the same as deleting installed games or saved data. VitaShell’s project describes it as “an alternative replacement of the PS Vita’s LiveArea,” with file management, package installation and FTP tools. That statement supports a different launcher and management workflow, not a universal promise that every game, license and save survives every installation or storage change.
Your content is most likely to remain usable when the active storage mount, content database, licenses and application paths stay intact and you have a verified backup. The greatest danger is usually an incorrect storage or database configuration that makes bubbles or saves inaccessible, rather than the dashboard deliberately erasing them.

What LiveArea does on a PS Vita
LiveArea is more than a wallpaper or theme. Sony’s User’s Guide describes the Vita home screen as the place for application icons, folders and page navigation, with a maximum of 500 application icons. Each application also has its own LiveArea screen, which presents information and actions that vary by application.
That creates two layers:
- The home shell: the screen used to browse application bubbles, folders and pages.
- Per-application LiveArea data: the presentation screen associated with an individual title.
When people say they want to “replace LiveArea,” they may mean replacing the home launcher, changing the appearance of LiveArea, or replacing the LiveArea data for one title. Those are different operations with different failure modes.

A launcher or dashboard replacement
VitaShell is the clearest documented example. Its project README calls it “an alternative replacement of the PS Vita’s LiveArea.” It is identified as a file manager, package installer and built-in FTP tool. In practical terms, that can give you a management-oriented way to reach content instead of relying on the standard bubble-first experience.
This wording should not be stretched into a claim that every system component is removed globally. A custom launcher changes the practical user interface and management workflow; it does not automatically prove that Sony’s underlying title records, licenses or storage structures have been deleted.
Per-title LiveArea customization
VitaSDK’s SceLiveAreaUtilUser reference documents sceLiveAreaReplaceAllSync and sceLiveAreaReplaceAllForTitleSync. These APIs replace LiveArea data for a specified title. They are evidence that custom content can be supplied at the title level, not evidence that the entire Vita shell has been replaced.

A theme or visual customization changes the appearance of the existing shell. It is not equivalent to installing a file manager-based dashboard, and neither is automatically equivalent to replacing a title’s LiveArea data. Keeping these categories separate makes it easier to judge what a guide or plugin is actually changing.

Will installing a custom dashboard delete games or saves?
An interface replacement, by itself, is not documented as a deletion command. Sony documents Vita games on Vita cards and games downloaded from PlayStation Store, along with saved-data copying and online saved-data uploads. Sony’s Content Manager documentation also covers copying, deleting, backing up and restoring games, applications and saved data using a PS3, computer or online storage for system software 3.73 or later.
That means a dashboard change can be compatible with preserved content, but it does not create a lossless guarantee. A game bubble that vanishes can mean the title is no longer indexed or the expected storage is not mounted; it is not proof that the game files or save were erased.
What must remain valid
For existing content to appear and launch normally, four practical dependencies matter:
- Active storage mount: the system must be looking at the card or internal storage that actually contains the content.
- Content database entries: the Vita must still have records that point to installed applications.
- Licenses: downloaded content must retain the licensing information required for access.
- Application paths: the launcher and plugins must reference the locations where files are stored.
Changing a launcher while preserving those dependencies is a different risk from changing the launcher and moving the entire library to another storage device at the same time.

- Save up to : 8 to 16 full PlayStation Vita games, 24 movies, 9,136 songs, or 6,400 photos
Why games or bubbles can appear to disappear
Most frightening post-installation symptoms are visibility or access problems. A bubble may be absent because the dashboard is not reading the expected mount, the content database has not been rebuilt correctly, or a title’s path and license information no longer line up. A save can also seem missing when the game is being started from a different installation or storage location.
Do not immediately format, delete, reinstall or repeatedly write to the affected storage. Those actions can make recovery harder. First establish whether the original storage is mounted and whether the original files are still present. Then check the database, license state and application path before considering a restore.
Back up the Vita before changing the shell
Use Sony’s documented backup routes before installing a dashboard, changing plugins or migrating storage. A backup is what turns a conditional preservation plan into a recoverable one.
- Confirm the current baseline. Start the games you care about, open their saves and note which storage holds each title. Record the Vita’s firmware version and whether content is on a Vita card, internal storage or another configured device.
- Copy saved data. Sony documents copying saved data between systems and uploading saved data to PlayStation Network servers. Use the option available to your system and account, and make sure the transfer finishes before changing software.
- Create a broader Content Manager backup. For system software 3.73 or later, Sony documents backing up and restoring games, applications and saved data with a PS3, computer or online storage. A save-only copy is useful, but a broader content backup gives you a path back when the problem is the installation or database rather than one game.
- Keep the backup destination separate. Do not store your only copy on the same card or storage device you are about to reconfigure. Keep the date, destination and the titles included in the backup with your records.
- Change one variable at a time. Install or test the dashboard before beginning a storage migration. If the launcher works with the original storage, you have a much clearer rollback point.
- Use a version-matched guide. VitaShell’s repository is archived, and plugin behavior can vary by firmware. Follow instructions written for the firmware and storage arrangement actually running on your Vita rather than assuming that a guide for another version is interchangeable.
A backup is not a promise that every homebrew dashboard is safe. It is the documented recovery route if a database, mount, license or path problem leaves content inaccessible.

How to test a new dashboard without risking the whole library
After installation, test the smallest useful set before reorganizing anything:
- Boot with the storage arrangement that was working before the change.
- Confirm that the dashboard can see the expected application locations.
- Launch one downloaded game and one cartridge-based game if you use both formats.
- Open a known save in each test game and confirm that new progress can be written.
- Check several less frequently used bubbles so you are not testing only a single title record.
- Only after those checks succeed should you add further plugins, alter paths or begin a storage migration.
If a test fails, stop at that point and return to the last known-good configuration. The purpose of staged testing is to distinguish a launcher problem from a storage or content-database problem before the change affects every title.

SD2Vita is a storage change, not merely a new home screen. The YAMT/SD2Vita guide describes switching to microSD-based SD2Vita storage and says the process is intended to carry existing apps over, while warning that moving an existing game and save catalog can be complicated.

If you install a dashboard and move to microSD in the same session, a missing bubble does not tell you which change caused the problem.

| Change | Primary purpose | What it can affect | Safer preservation approach |
|---|---|---|---|
| Custom dashboard such as VitaShell | Alternative launcher and management workflow | How applications, files and packages are reached | Keep the existing storage mount first; verify games and saves before further changes |
| Per-title LiveArea replacement | Custom LiveArea data for a specified title | That title’s presentation layer | Keep title records and paths unchanged; test the named title |
| Theme customization | Visual changes to the existing shell | Appearance and navigation presentation | Back up before applying it, but do not treat it as a storage migration |
| SD2Vita migration | Move storage to a microSD-based setup | Mount points, application paths, database visibility and save access | Make a full backup first and follow a firmware-matched YAMT/SD2Vita procedure |
“PS Vita SD2Vita adapter” is therefore a relevant search term when your preservation plan includes a storage move, but adapter compatibility, retailer claims, pricing and model support must be checked separately for your particular Vita.
How to compare custom dashboard options
Do not choose a dashboard solely because screenshots look cleaner. Compare the operation it performs and the recovery path it leaves you.
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Scope of replacement | Does it replace the practical launcher, customize one title’s LiveArea data, or only change the stock theme? |
| Management tools | Does it provide file management, package installation or FTP, as VitaShell documents? |
| Firmware and plugin compatibility | Does the guide match your firmware, storage layout and currently installed plugins? |
| Backup and rollback | Can you return to the previous storage mount and restore games, applications and saves through a documented backup? |
| Failure visibility | Will a missing title be distinguishable from a missing mount, database entry, license or application path? |
A dashboard that offers more management power can also expose more ways to change files or paths accidentally. The useful comparison is not “which shell has the most features?” but “which option has a clear, version-appropriate recovery procedure for my content?”
Recovery when a game or save is missing
Use a conservative order of operations:
- Stop writing to the affected storage. Avoid formatting, deleting bubbles or reinstalling the game until you know whether the files are still present.
- Return to the known storage arrangement. Check that the card or internal storage containing the original content is mounted as it was before the change.
- Check the content database and paths. A launcher may be looking at a different location even when the files remain intact.
- Check licensing information. Downloaded titles can be inaccessible when their license state is not available to the current setup.
- Test the original launcher or a known-good configuration. This helps separate a dashboard issue from a damaged or incomplete content installation.
- Restore from the Sony backup. Use the Content Manager restore path appropriate to your system software and backup destination when the original configuration cannot be recovered safely.
If the backup restores the content but not the custom setup, that is still a successful preservation outcome: games and saves are back, and the dashboard can be reconsidered separately.
The limits of the guarantee
No cited source publishes a universal success rate or guarantees that every custom dashboard preserves every game and save on every Vita configuration. VitaShell’s replacement description establishes the intended role of the software; Sony’s guides establish backup and restore paths; the SD2Vita documentation establishes that carrying an existing catalog over is intended but can be complicated. None of those statements is a blanket lossless guarantee for every firmware, plugin combination or migration.
Use “preserves my content” as a condition to verify, not as an assumption. The reliable standard is: a current backup exists, the active mount is known, the database and licenses are intact, and representative games and saves have been tested after each change.
