1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteNo. The GTX 1060 cannot use native NVIDIA DLSS. It is a Pascal-generation GTX graphics card, not an RTX model, and lacks the dedicated Tensor Core hardware NVIDIA associates with DLSS. A driver update, game patch, or copied DLL cannot turn it into an RTX GPU.
You can still improve performance with a game’s resolution scaler, AMD FSR, Intel XeSS in compatible implementations, or NVIDIA Image Scaling. If genuine DLSS is the requirement, you need an RTX-class graphics card.
Why the GTX 1060 cannot run DLSS
The GTX 1060 uses NVIDIA’s Pascal architecture and the GP106 GPU. NVIDIA’s reference 6GB model has 1,280 CUDA cores, 6GB of GDDR5 memory, 192GB/s of memory bandwidth, and a 120W reference TDP. Its specifications do not include Tensor Cores.
NVIDIA describes Tensor Cores as the dedicated RTX hardware used to accelerate DLSS. The GTX 1060 is therefore not excluded simply because it is old or too slow; it is outside the official DLSS hardware family. See NVIDIA’s RTX-versus-GTX explanation and the original GTX 1060 specifications.

What DLSS actually is
DLSS is not just a sharpening filter or a generic driver option. DLSS Super Resolution reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution render using temporal information, motion vectors, and an NVIDIA-trained model. NVIDIA’s DLSS documentation describes RTX hardware as a requirement for DLSS integrations.
- DLSS Super Resolution: An upscaling and reconstruction feature intended for GeForce RTX GPUs.
- DLAA: Uses the DLSS technology path for anti-aliasing at native resolution. It is not a performance upscaler.
- Ray Reconstruction: AI-based reconstruction for ray-traced rendering pipelines.
- DLSS Frame Generation: Generates additional frames from rendered frames and motion information.
- DLSS Multi Frame Generation: A newer RTX-generation feature that creates multiple generated frames.
These features have different game, driver, and hardware requirements, but none should be treated as officially available on a GTX 1060. NVIDIA’s current DLSS overview and developer material are available through its DLSS and RTX game guidance and DLSS developer documentation.
DirectX 12 support does not make the GTX 1060 an RTX card
The GTX 1060 can support DirectX 12, but that does not mean it supports every DirectX 12 feature. An API, feature level, hardware ray-tracing acceleration, Tensor Core acceleration, and DLSS compatibility are separate matters.
Consequently, a GTX 1060 may run a DirectX 12 game while still being unable to use DLSS or hardware-accelerated ray tracing. NVIDIA documents Pascal’s DirectX support and feature-level limitations in its support guidance.
Can a driver update or game patch unlock DLSS?
Not officially. Drivers can fix bugs, improve compatibility, optimize selected games, and expose features that the GPU already supports. They cannot add physical Tensor Cores or change Pascal hardware into RTX hardware.
As of the August 16, 2026 compatibility snapshot, NVIDIA provides no official driver path for enabling native DLSS on a GTX 1060. A game patch can add an upscaler, but it cannot make the GTX 1060 satisfy the hardware requirements of NVIDIA’s native DLSS implementation.

What happens when a game includes a DLSS menu?
Games handle unsupported hardware differently. The option may be hidden, greyed out, rejected when selected, or shown alongside a warning that the GPU is below the required specification. The game may still run and may offer FSR, XeSS, or its own resolution scaler.
Do not copy DLSS DLL files from another game or download random “DLSS unlockers.” A replacement-upscaler mod, where available, is not the same as the GTX 1060 running NVIDIA DLSS. Unofficial files may be unsafe, violate a game’s terms, break after updates, or fail because the underlying hardware remains unsupported.

NVIDIA Image Scaling
NVIDIA Image Scaling (NIS) can be used on supported non-RTX hardware and is NVIDIA’s own alternative for broader GPU compatibility. It is a spatial upscaler with sharpening, not DLSS’s Tensor Core-based temporal reconstruction.
Where supported, update the driver through the NVIDIA App or NVIDIA’s driver-download page, then check the game’s graphics or display settings for NVIDIA Image Scaling, NIS, or a resolution-scaling control. Choose a lower render resolution or percentage and use sharpening conservatively; excessive sharpening can create halos and ringing. Menu names and availability vary by game and driver version.
AMD FSR
Game-integrated AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution may work on a GTX 1060, but support is title- and feature-dependent. FSR 1 is a broad-compatibility spatial upscaler. FSR 2 provides temporal reconstruction, while FSR 3 includes upscaling and, in some games, frame generation.
Do not assume that every FSR 3 feature works on a GTX 1060. Upscaling and frame generation have different requirements, and AMD notes that it does not provide technical or warranty support for FSR enablement on competing GPUs. Check the specific game’s requirements and its available options using AMD’s FSR documentation.

Intel XeSS
Intel XeSS Super Resolution may work in some games on non-Intel GPUs. Intel documents requirements involving the rendering API, Shader Model support, and hardware-accelerated DP4a paths. The game must integrate XeSS, and compatibility is not universal across DirectX 11, DirectX 12, and Vulkan implementations.
Try XeSS only when the game exposes it and the title’s requirements indicate that the GTX 1060 is supported. Intel’s XeSS developer guide explains the relevant paths.
Native resolution scaling
A game’s built-in resolution scaler is often the simplest option. Start with a moderate scale or a Quality preset, then compare it with FSR, XeSS, and Image Scaling at the same output resolution. If the internal resolution becomes too low, native rendering with reduced settings can look cleaner than aggressive upscaling.
NVIDIA DSR
The GTX 1060 supports Dynamic Super Resolution (DSR) where the driver and game allow it. DSR renders above the monitor’s native resolution and downsamples the result. DLSS does the opposite: it renders below the target resolution and reconstructs upward.

DSR can improve image quality when the GTX 1060 has performance headroom, but it normally lowers frame rate. It is not the right tool when the goal is more FPS. NVIDIA lists DSR in the GTX 1060 user guide.

- Update the graphics driver for stability and game compatibility. Do not expect this to add DLSS.
- Confirm that the game is using the GTX 1060 rather than an integrated laptop GPU.
- Use the game’s native resolution scaler if available.
- Try FSR 2 or FSR 3 upscaling, then XeSS, then NVIDIA Image Scaling when those options are available.
- Disable ray tracing if the title allows it.
- Reduce volumetric effects, shadows, reflections, ambient occlusion, and view distance.
- Lower texture quality if VRAM usage approaches the card’s limit.
- Compare frame rate, frame pacing, and image stability rather than choosing an upscaler by name alone.
For most GTX 1060 systems, 1080p is the most realistic general target, though results depend on the game, settings, CPU, VRAM, and—in laptops—power limits and cooling. 1440p may require aggressive scaling and reduced settings; 4K output is suitable only for lighter games, not as a general expectation.

GTX 1060 3GB versus 6GB
Neither version supports DLSS. The 6GB model has more VRAM headroom, while the 3GB model is more exposed to texture-memory pressure, stutter, and settings restrictions in newer games.
Upscaling reduces the workload used to render pixels, but it does not remove the game’s need for VRAM for textures, geometry, shaders, and other engine data. A 3GB card can therefore remain limited even after enabling FSR, XeSS, Image Scaling, or a resolution scaler.
What about laptop GTX 1060 models?
The same compatibility answer applies to GTX 1060 laptop GPUs: they are Pascal GTX products, not RTX products, and do not gain native DLSS. Performance can differ substantially from the desktop card because of laptop power limits, clock speeds, cooling, and the paired CPU. Do not use desktop GTX 1060 specifications as an exact laptop-performance promise.
When an upgrade makes sense
Upgrade if native DLSS, DLSS Frame Generation, Ray Reconstruction, or other RTX-only features are central to the games you play. Choose the specific GPU based on its VRAM, raster performance, target resolution, power-supply and case requirements, and the exact DLSS features it supports—not merely the presence of an RTX label.
An AMD Radeon card may be a better fit if raster performance, VRAM, or broad FSR support matters more than NVIDIA-specific DLSS. Intel Arc may suit readers interested in XeSS and modern media features, but game support, drivers, platform compatibility, power, and resale value still need checking. Official product information is available from NVIDIA GeForce, AMD Radeon, and Intel Arc.
Conclusion
The GTX 1060 cannot do native DLSS, and no driver or ordinary game patch can change that. Use the best upscaler the individual game supports—often FSR, XeSS, the game’s own scaler, or NVIDIA Image Scaling—and tune demanding settings around your 3GB or 6GB VRAM limit. If genuine DLSS is non-negotiable, an RTX-class upgrade is required.
