For a true PS3 factory reset, open Settings → System Settings → Restore PS3™ System. This erases data stored on the console’s internal system storage and returns the system software to its default settings. The operation cannot be undone, so back up anything important first.
Choose the right PS3 reset option
“Factory reset” is often used loosely, but the PS3 has several different commands:

If you only want to undo display, network or other configuration changes, choose Restore Default Settings. If you need to erase the console before handing it to someone else, choose Restore PS3™ System. Sony documents the difference between these commands in its Restore Default Settings instructions and Restore PS3 System instructions.
What a full PS3 reset deletes
Restore PS3™ System deletes data stored in the PS3’s internal system storage. Depending on what you have saved locally, that can include:

- Installed games, game data and downloaded applications
- Photos, music and videos
- Themes and other personalization
- Browser bookmarks and history
- Local user information and console settings
Downloaded purchases are tied to your PlayStation Network account rather than permanently lost with the console, but you should not assume every local file or save can be restored. Copy restrictions, account access and the backup method affect what can be recovered.
The reset does not downgrade the PS3 to its original launch-era firmware. Sony states that Restore PS3 System cannot return the console to an earlier system-software version.
Back up your PS3 before resetting
If you want to preserve data, use the built-in backup tool before starting:
- Connect compatible USB storage directly to the PS3.
- Open Settings → System Settings → Backup Utility.
- Select Back Up and follow the prompts.
For PS3 Backup Utility, the USB drive must use the FAT32 file system. The PS3 creates the backup in PS3/EXPORT/BACKUP. Do not rename or move that folder or its files, because doing so can prevent the console from recognizing the backup. Sony’s Backup Utility documentation lists the supported process and limitations.

Important backup limitations
- Trophies are not included in Backup Utility backups. Sign in to the relevant PlayStation Network account and synchronize trophies from the Trophy Collection before wiping.
- Some copy-protected saved data may not be restorable.
- Some copyright-protected video files may fail to restore after the PS3 is formatted or restored.
- Especially important photos, music or other files should also be copied individually where the PS3 permits it.
A PS3-to-PS3 transfer is a separate operation. Sony’s Data Transfer Utility moves content between two PS3 systems over Ethernet and can delete data on the destination console; it is not necessary for a simple wipe.
How to factory-reset a PS3 from the XMB
- Turn on the PS3 and wait for the XMB menu to load.
- Go to Settings.
- Open System Settings.
- Select Restore PS3™ System.
- Read and confirm the warning that system-storage data will be deleted.
- Choose the available format method.
- Select Quick Format for a faster operation or Full Format when clearing important or sensitive information is the priority.
- Follow the on-screen instructions and wait for the process to finish.
When the reset completes, the PS3 displays its initial setup screen. Sony warns not to turn off the console during the operation: do not unplug it, press the power button repeatedly or remove connected storage. The controller’s PS button and console power button may be inactive while the process runs. Interrupting it can damage the system software and may require recovery or service. Quick Format or Full Format?

Do not treat Full Format as a documented guarantee of modern, multi-pass forensic erasure. It is the safer Sony-recommended choice for sensitive data, but the reset itself is still described by Sony as irreversible from the console’s normal operation.
What to do after the reset
The initial setup screen lets you choose a language, set the date and time, configure display output and network settings, and create or sign in to a local user. If you are keeping the console, complete setup and restore what you can from your backup.

If you are selling or giving it away, stop at the initial setup screen. Do not sign back into your account. Before or after wiping, manage console activation and account settings through the current PlayStation account-management tools where available. A local reset does not necessarily perform every account-management action, and available features can vary by region. Sony’s current PS3 support information explains which account and system functions remain available.
Sale or handoff checklist
- Back up permitted data.
- Synchronize trophies.
- Review account and console activation settings.
- Remove discs and USB devices.
- Run Restore PS3™ System.
- Choose Full Format if sensitive information was stored.
- Leave the console at the initial setup screen.
- Clean the exterior without opening or modifying the console.
If the PS3 will not load the XMB
Do not immediately initialize the console if preserving data matters. First check whether the problem is caused by a loose cable, incorrect TV input, failed display output, damaged file system or hard drive.
Blank screen checks
- Confirm that the TV is on the correct input.
- Power-cycle both the PS3 and the display.
- Try the available HDMI or composite connection as appropriate.
- Use the PS3 recovery menu to restore display settings if the console is running but output is misconfigured.
A blank screen may be a video-output or hardware problem, so repeated destructive resets may not solve it.
Use Safe Mode cautiously
Sony’s PS3 Safe Mode documentation lists these options: Restart System, Restore Default Settings, Restore File System, Rebuild Database, Initialize PS3 System and System Update. The exact instructions and availability can vary by region and PS3 revision, so check the applicable official Safe Mode support page.

The commonly documented entry process is:
- Turn the PS3 completely off until the power indicator is red.
- Press and hold the power button.
- Release it after the second beep, then follow the console’s audible prompts.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable if requested.
- Press the PS button.
- Select the appropriate Safe Mode option.
Use Restore File System for reported file-system errors and Rebuild Database for content-index or menu problems, while understanding that neither guarantees preservation of every file. Use Initialize PS3 System only when you accept data loss and the normal XMB reset is unavailable. Try the non-destructive options first.

Reinstalling PS3 system software is different from restoring settings, wiping storage or formatting the drive. It is generally a recovery step for damaged or missing system software, not the first choice when the console still boots normally.
Sony’s current update instructions require a FAT32 USB drive containing:
PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUPUse only the official Sony update file. Depending on the recovery situation, follow the on-screen instructions or use Settings → System Update → Update via Storage Media. Sony’s PS3 system-software support page provides the current regional instructions.

If something goes wrong
The reset appears stuck
Wait before taking action. The duration depends on the storage capacity, drive condition and selected format method. Watch for storage activity or changes in the display, and do not repeatedly press the power button. If it remains unresponsive for an unusually long time, note the PS3 model, on-screen message and indicator behavior before attempting Safe Mode recovery.
The console loses power during the reset
An interrupted reset can damage system software. The PS3 may require Safe Mode recovery, an official system-software reinstallation or hardware service. Do not assume that the incomplete operation can be safely reversed or that all data will be recoverable.
The USB backup is not recognized
- Connect the drive directly to the PS3.
- Confirm that it is formatted as FAT32.
- Check that it has enough free space.
- Verify the expected
PS3/EXPORT/BACKUPstructure. - Make sure the backup folder and files were not renamed or moved.
If you only need to fix a network or display issue, avoid a full wipe. Check the cable, television input, router, display settings and possible hard-drive problems first.
