Can a GTX 1080 Do Ray Tracing? What Actually Works in 2026

The GTX 1080 can technically run ray tracing through shader-based DXR or Vulkan implementations, but no RT cores or DLSS means demanding modern RT and path tracing are generally impractical.

Yes, but only in a limited technical sense. A GTX 1080 can render some DirectX Raytracing (DXR) and Vulkan ray-tracing effects through software running on its shader cores. It has no dedicated RT cores, cannot use NVIDIA DLSS, and is usually a poor choice for demanding modern ray-traced or path-traced games.

What “ray-tracing support” means

People use “support” to describe three different things:

  • API support: the driver and GPU expose DXR or Vulkan ray-tracing functions.
  • Game support: a particular game allows ray tracing on that GPU and renderer.
  • Playable performance: the card maintains an acceptable frame rate and frame pacing with the effect enabled.

The GTX 1080 can meet the first condition in compatible implementations. The second depends on the game, and the third depends on the effect, resolution, preset and rest of the system.

Why the GTX 1080 can run some ray tracing

The GTX 1080 is a Pascal-generation card, announced by NVIDIA on May 6, 2016 (NVIDIA newsroom). Pascal predates NVIDIA’s RTX architecture, but NVIDIA later enabled basic DXR for GeForce GTX 1060 6GB and faster cards through a Game Ready driver update (NVIDIA’s DXR announcement). A GTX 1080 is above that stated threshold.

NVIDIA also lists Vulkan ray-tracing support for GeForce GTX 1060 6GB and higher cards (NVIDIA Vulkan documentation). That is an API and driver capability, not a promise that every Vulkan game will accept the card or run well.

It has no RT cores

The GTX 1080 has no dedicated ray-tracing hardware. Its programmable shader cores perform BVH traversal and ray/triangle intersection work while also handling ordinary rasterized rendering. NVIDIA explains this software approach in its ray-tracing guidance (NVIDIA’s ray-tracing questions and answers).

GPU class Ray-tracing method DLSS
GTX 1080 / 1080 Ti (Pascal) Shader-based software ray tracing; no RT cores No
RTX 20, 30, 40 and 50 series Dedicated RT-core acceleration RTX hardware required

“GTX” therefore does not mean ray tracing is impossible. It means this generation lacks NVIDIA’s dedicated RT-core acceleration.

Why performance is much worse than on RTX

On Pascal, ray-tracing calculations compete directly with rasterization and other shader work. RTX cards can offload key operations to RT cores. They can also use Tensor-core features such as DLSS where a game supports them. NVIDIA describes DLSS as exclusive to GeForce RTX GPUs in its RTX material (NVIDIA RTX announcement).

A GTX 1080 cannot use NVIDIA DLSS Super Resolution. A game may still offer a generic temporal or spatial scaler, AMD FSR, Intel XeSS or its own resolution scale, but those are separate technologies and availability varies by title.

Ray-tracing costs also vary substantially. Limited reflections, shadows and ambient-occlusion effects generally require less work than ray-traced global illumination. Full path tracing is the most demanding class. NVIDIA notes these workload differences in its DXR explanation (NVIDIA’s ray-tracing questions and answers).

What performance to expect

There is no honest universal FPS number for a GTX 1080 with ray tracing. Results change with the game, driver, CPU, resolution, RT quality, number of rays, texture load and upscaling.

  • 1080p with one light effect: potentially useful for experimentation at low settings.
  • Reflections or limited shadows: usually more realistic targets than full global illumination.
  • Ray-traced global illumination: often too expensive for comfortable play on Pascal.
  • Path tracing: generally not a realistic target.
  • 1440p or 4K: usually poor choices once RT is enabled.

These are practical categories, not guarantees. A game’s implementation can move a feature up or down the list.

Recommended settings for testing

  1. Start at 1920×1080 with the Low or Medium preset.
  2. Record average FPS and 1% lows with ray tracing disabled.
  3. Enable only one effect under Graphics, Video or Advanced Graphics—usually reflections, shadows or ambient occlusion.
  4. Use the lowest RT quality setting first. Lower RT quality before reducing textures, provided textures fit in available VRAM.
  5. Enable the game’s resolution scaler or non-DLSS upscaler if it has one.
  6. Compare the visual improvement with frame-time stability. Disable RT if the image change is minor but frame pacing becomes uneven.

Do not expect disabling motion blur to create a meaningful performance gain; it can only make low frame rates look clearer.

Why a game may refuse to enable ray tracing

Basic DXR exposure does not force developers to support every GTX card. A title may require hardware RT, a particular shader model, mesh-shader support or another feature. The DirectX 12 renderer and Vulkan renderer can also have different requirements, and developers may disable software RT because performance is unacceptable.

Troubleshooting checklist

  • Install the latest driver available for the card from NVIDIA’s official driver page.
  • Update the game and read its current system requirements and patch notes.
  • If offered, test the alternate DirectX 12 or Vulkan renderer.
  • Check whether the requirement explicitly says RTX or hardware ray tracing.
  • Avoid undocumented launch commands or configuration hacks; they can cause crashes, artifacts or unstable frame pacing.

If a game explicitly requires hardware RT, treat that as a compatibility limit, not a setting that a driver can fix.

GTX 1080 versus GTX 1080 Ti

The GTX 1080 Ti has more raw performance and is the stronger Pascal option for software ray tracing. It still has no RT cores and no DLSS, so it remains in the same compatibility category. It may improve frame rate, but it does not provide the RTX-style hardware acceleration.

Should you keep the GTX 1080 or upgrade?

Keep it when

  • You mainly play rasterized games at 1080p.
  • Your current frame rates are satisfactory.
  • You only want to experiment with RT in lighter or older implementations.
  • An upgrade would require spending on other components as well.

Upgrade when

  • Ray tracing, global illumination or path tracing is a priority.
  • You want DLSS.
  • A game you play requires hardware RT.
  • You want stable 1440p ray-traced gaming or better support in new releases.

For a new RT-focused purchase, choose an RTX model rather than another Pascal card. NVIDIA lists the RTX 5060 with fourth-generation RT cores, DLSS 4 and 8GB of GDDR7, with a starting price of $299 on its product page (RTX 5060 family). That is NVIDIA’s listed starting price, not a guaranteed September 2026 street price. NVIDIA’s launch announcement listed the RTX 5060 Ti at $379 for the family, including an announced $429 starting price for the 16GB model (RTX 5060 announcement). The 16GB version can be more comfortable for heavy textures, but the extra cost is unnecessary for a GTX 1080 owner who only plays older rasterized games at 1080p.

An RTX 4060 can also make sense if substantially discounted. NVIDIA launched it at $299 and positioned it as a 1080p RTX/DLSS card (RTX 4060 announcement), but its launch price is not its current market value.
