For a physical Steam Link, connect a compatible Xbox controller in Settings → Bluetooth, or plug it directly into USB. Put the controller in pairing mode, select it when it appears, then test it in Steam’s interface. Steam’s current device-specific guidance lists the Xbox Series X|S controller as supported over USB but not Bluetooth on Steam Link, so USB is the correct fallback for that model.
If you use the Steam Link app on a phone, tablet, TV, or streaming box, pair the controller with the device running the app—not with the remote gaming PC.
Identify your Xbox controller first
“Xbox controller” covers several generations with different wireless hardware. Check the shell around the Xbox button, the model number inside the battery compartment or on the rear label, the pairing button, and the connector type. Visual clues are useful but not infallible because revisions and special editions vary.
| Controller | Bluetooth on physical Steam Link | USB |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox 360 wired controller | Not applicable | Supported; Steam reports possible extension-cable disconnections during vibration. |
| Original Xbox One controller | Generally not Bluetooth-equipped | Usually the safer connection when compatible. |
| Xbox One S and later Bluetooth-capable Xbox One models | Supported by Steam’s Xbox-controller troubleshooting flow, subject to firmware and device support. | Supported. |
| Xbox Series X|S controller | Steam’s current Steam Link page says Bluetooth is not supported. | Supported. |
| Xbox Wireless Adapter | Do not assume compatibility with Steam Link. | Adapter-specific support must be verified. |
When the model is uncertain or Bluetooth setup fails, use USB. A controller that works over Bluetooth on a PC is not proof that it is supported by a physical Steam Link.

Physical Steam Link: connect by Bluetooth
- Turn on the controller.
- Hold its pair/sync button until the Xbox logo flashes rapidly. The button’s location and behavior vary by model.
- On the Steam Link, open Settings → Bluetooth.
- Wait a few seconds for the controller to appear in the device list, then select it and confirm pairing. Steam’s general instructions are documented at its Bluetooth setup page.
- Return to the Steam Link home screen and navigate Steam’s interface or launch a game to test sticks, buttons, triggers, and rumble.
A USB dongle should not be needed for a supported Bluetooth device paired directly through Steam Link’s Bluetooth settings. Steam notes that a device must actually advertise Bluetooth; being described only as “wireless” is not enough. See Steam’s Bluetooth device guidance.
Physical Steam Link: connect by USB
- Use a data-capable USB cable that matches the controller’s connector. Some cables provide power only.
- Plug the cable directly into a USB port on the Steam Link.
- Turn on the controller if it does not activate automatically.
- Wait for detection, then test it in Steam’s menus or a game.
USB is the preferred route for an Xbox Series X|S controller on physical Steam Link hardware, for controllers without Bluetooth, and whenever wireless pairing is unreliable. For an Xbox 360 wired controller, avoid USB extension cables: Steam documents disconnections, especially when vibration is active, and recommends a direct connection (Steam support).
Steam Link app: pair with the streaming device
With the Steam Link app, Bluetooth pairing normally happens in the operating system or accessory settings of the phone, tablet, TV, or streaming box running the app. Put the Xbox controller in pairing mode, open that device’s Bluetooth settings, select the controller, and then launch or reconnect to Steam Link. Do not pair it to the host PC and expect the app to relay that connection.

The exact menus depend on the platform and its software version. If the app device cannot use the controller, USB support and controller compatibility are determined by that platform rather than by the physical Steam Link menu.
Choose Bluetooth or USB
| Factor | Bluetooth | USB |
|---|---|---|
| Convenience | Wireless, but model-sensitive pairing. | Usually plug-and-play. |
| Compatibility | Depends on controller generation and Steam Link or app support. | Broader and more predictable. |
| Cable | No cable during play. | Requires a suitable data cable. |
| Troubleshooting | Can involve stale pairings, interference, batteries, and firmware. | Usually limited to cable, port, and firmware issues. |
| Best choice | Compatible Xbox One S-era Bluetooth controller and supported app/device. | Series X|S on physical Steam Link, uncertain models, or failed pairing. |
Troubleshoot by symptom
The controller is not listed
- Confirm the Xbox logo is flashing rapidly and the controller is genuinely in pairing mode.
- Turn off Bluetooth on nearby phones, PCs, consoles, and tablets that may reconnect automatically.
- Replace or recharge the batteries.
- Power-cycle both controller and Steam Link.
- Forget old entries, then scan again.
- Test the controller with a phone or laptop. If it fails there too, investigate the controller or firmware.
- Confirm that the model has Bluetooth. An original Xbox One controller and some other wireless models do not.
- Use USB if the model is unsupported or uncertain.
It appears but will not connect
- Turn off the controller.
- Open the Steam Link Bluetooth device list.
- Select the old controller entry and press the X button to delete or forget it.
- Put the controller back into pairing mode and select it again. Steam documents this reset process at its pairing-reset instructions.
Fully charge the controller or replace its batteries before retrying.
It connects, then disconnects
- Check battery level and reduce distance or radio interference.
- Stop another nearby device from reclaiming the controller.
- Update controller firmware.
- Restart the Steam Link or app session and check for available device updates.
- For a wired Xbox 360 controller, remove any USB extension and connect directly.
It works in Steam menus but not in a game
- Exit the game and restart the Steam Link session.
- Confirm the controller can navigate Big Picture mode or the app interface.
- Open the game’s controller settings and try Steam Input’s default Xbox layout.
- Test another game. If only one title fails, its input configuration or launcher is the likely boundary.
- Check for another controller or virtual input device taking priority.
Pairing establishes a link; it does not guarantee that every game, external launcher, or non-Steam title will interpret the input correctly.

Button prompts are wrong
Check the game’s controller layout and Steam Input profile. A game may display generic or PlayStation-style prompts even while the Xbox controller is functioning. Test the actual buttons in a second title before treating this as a connection failure.
Series X|S will not pair over Bluetooth
On a physical Steam Link, this is expected according to Steam’s current device-specific page: the Xbox Series X controller is listed as USB-supported and Bluetooth-unsupported (Steam support). Connect it with a data-capable USB cable instead. App-platform behavior can differ, so follow the Bluetooth or USB support of the device running the app.
Update Xbox controller firmware
Steam’s Xbox One S troubleshooting guidance recommends updating through an Xbox console or through Microsoft’s Xbox Accessories app on a Windows PC, using USB during the update. Current app availability and operating-system requirements can change; use the official Xbox support hub for the current instructions and download route. Microsoft’s controller references also include the quick-start guide and Bluetooth guidance.

When replacing hardware is unnecessary
Before buying a controller or adapter, try a direct USB connection. A supported Bluetooth controller should pair without a separate USB dongle, and Steam does not guarantee that the Xbox Wireless Adapter works with every Steam Link setup. If you need the app route, install Steam Link on a compatible device and pair the controller there.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I connect an Xbox controller without a USB dongle?
Yes, when the controller and Steam Link or app device support Bluetooth. Pair it directly through the physical Steam Link’s Bluetooth settings or the app device’s Bluetooth settings. A dongle is not normally required.
Can I connect multiple Xbox controllers?
You can pair multiple controllers when the Steam Link hardware or app platform supports them, but assignment order and simultaneous support depend on that device and Steam’s input configuration.

Why does my controller work on my PC but not on Steam Link?
Bluetooth support is device-specific. The physical Steam Link may reject a model that a PC accepts, and Steam Link app pairing must occur on the phone, TV, tablet, or streaming box running the app.
Why does my controller keep reconnecting to my Xbox console?
Turn off Bluetooth on nearby devices or disconnect the controller there before pairing with Steam Link. Nearby consoles, phones, and PCs can automatically reclaim a remembered controller.
Can I use the Xbox Wireless Adapter?
Do not assume so. Steam’s documented path is direct Bluetooth for supported controllers or USB, and adapter compatibility must be confirmed for the specific Steam Link hardware.
