Can a Hetzner ARM Server Run FFmpeg for a 24/7 YouTube Stream?

Hetzner CAX supports Arm64 applications, so FFmpeg can run on it with a matching build. Sustained YouTube encoding performance is workload-specific and must be tested.

Yes—in principle. Hetzner’s CAX cloud servers use Ampere Altra Arm64 CPUs, so they can run an Arm64-compatible FFmpeg build. But compatibility does not prove that a particular CAX size can encode your chosen video in real time or keep a stream uninterrupted for 24/7. Test the exact build and workload on the instance you plan to use before relying on it.

Why FFmpeg can run on Hetzner CAX

Hetzner identifies its CAX family as Ampere Altra Arm64. Its announcement says the architecture enables native Arm64 applications and containers in the cloud (Hetzner’s 2023 announcement; hardware and CPU FAQ). FFmpeg can therefore run if the operating system, FFmpeg binary, and its required libraries are built for AArch64/Arm64.

Architecture matching matters: Hetzner’s FFmpeg documentation includes an example static download for amd64, which is a different architecture and should not be copied onto a CAX server as an Arm64 install method (Hetzner FFmpeg documentation). Hetzner’s server FAQ likewise says to use an ISO compatible with the server’s architecture (Hetzner server FAQ).

What CAX specifications do—and do not—tell you

Hetzner’s current cost-optimized product page lists CAX11, CAX21, CAX31, and CAX41 with 2, 4, 8, and 16 vCPUs, and 4, 8, 16, and 32 GB of RAM respectively. The page describes this range as intended for low-to-medium-traffic workloads that can tolerate variable CPU performance; check the live page for current availability and terms (Hetzner cost-optimized cloud hosting).

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Those specifications do not establish which size can handle a particular FFmpeg job. The reviewed official materials provide no CAX-specific sustained encoding benchmark, no guarantee of real-time performance at a given resolution or preset, and no certification of uninterrupted 24/7 streaming. Encoding load depends on the input and output frame rates and resolutions, codec, preset, filters, and the CPU performance available to the shared-vCPU instance. Do not treat a vCPU count as a guarantee of encoding capacity.

Choose the YouTube output profile before testing

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval with a four-second maximum. YouTube recommends RTMPS where supported. Its bitrate guidance varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate; for H.264, the recommended bitrate is 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. The listed H.264 minimums for those profiles are 5 Mbps and 6 Mbps respectively. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not evidence that a CAX server can encode those profiles in real time (YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

Pick the actual profile your channel will use, including audio, rather than testing a lighter configuration and assuming it will predict a heavier one. For 24/7 playback of pre-recorded material, distinguish the video’s source profile from the outgoing stream: if FFmpeg re-encodes, the server must keep pace with the selected output; if it passes through compatible media without re-encoding, the CPU workload may differ. Validate the exact command and media path you intend to run.

Set up and validate the Arm64 encoder

  1. Choose an Arm64 operating system. Confirm the cloud server and installed OS report AArch64/Arm64. Use an OS image and packages built for that architecture; Hetzner’s architecture-compatible ISO guidance is at its server FAQ.
  2. Install a matching FFmpeg build. Use the distribution’s Arm64 package or another build explicitly compiled for AArch64, along with compatible codec libraries. Do not use Hetzner’s amd64 static example as an Arm64 install command (FFmpeg documentation).
  3. Check the installed binary. Confirm the executable’s architecture is Arm64/AArch64 and that FFmpeg starts and recognizes the codecs, protocols, and filters your command needs. A package installing successfully does not show that every optional codec or filter is available.
  4. Configure the YouTube output. Use the stream key from YouTube Studio’s live-stream setup, keep it private, and configure the chosen codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR bitrate, and keyframe interval. Use RTMPS if the FFmpeg build and ingest endpoint support it. Follow YouTube’s current settings guidance for the complete profile (YouTube encoder settings) and stream-management controls (Manage live stream settings).
  5. Run a representative preflight. Use the intended input, audio, filters, and output settings for a sustained test. YouTube specifically advises testing before starting a live stream and using representative audio and motion. Watch whether FFmpeg stays ahead of real time, whether CPU has headroom, and whether YouTube reports stream-health problems.
  6. Test recovery, not just encoding. Simulate or observe a network interruption and verify that your process can reconnect and resume the intended feed. Check the YouTube stream status as well as the FFmpeg log; a running process alone does not confirm that viewers are receiving healthy video.

Make a continuous stream operable

For a long-running DIY setup, run FFmpeg under a service supervisor such as systemd or an equivalent process manager, configure a deliberate restart policy, and retain logs. Add alerts or periodic checks for process exit, missed output, and YouTube stream health. These are operational choices you must configure; they are not guarantees provided by the CAX instance. A restart can restore a failed process, but it does not by itself ensure the input, stream key, network connection, or YouTube ingest will recover correctly.

Protect the YouTube stream key as a credential. Store it in a restricted configuration or secret mechanism rather than publishing it in a script, logs, or a public repository. If you change or regenerate the key in YouTube Studio, update the FFmpeg configuration and verify the new stream before relying on it.

Common problems and what to check

  • “Exec format” or binary won’t start: the FFmpeg executable may be amd64 rather than Arm64. Install a build matching AArch64 and check the binary architecture.
  • FFmpeg starts but a codec or filter is missing: the installed build may not include that component, or a required library may be unavailable for Arm64. Check FFmpeg’s reported build configuration and use a compatible package/build.
  • Encoding falls behind or frames are dropped: reduce the output workload or filters and retest, or evaluate a different instance/architecture using the same workload. The official sources do not establish a CAX tier as sufficient for a given profile.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health: verify the outgoing bitrate, CBR configuration, keyframe interval, audio, network path, and ingest settings against YouTube’s current guidance. Do not infer encoder health from a successful connection alone.
  • The stream stops after a disconnect: inspect FFmpeg and service logs, confirm reconnect handling is configured, and check that the stream key and YouTube live event remain valid. A supervisor can restart a process, but reconnect behavior needs to be tested.
