Under the NHL 2025–26 and IIHF 2025/26 rules reviewed, a goalie may leave the crease to play a live puck. The key restriction is behind the net: playing the puck outside the competition’s designated area can bring a minor penalty. Legality is not the same as physical safety; no rulebook can guarantee that chasing a puck is risk-free.
What happens when a goalie leaves the crease?
Leaving the crease by itself is not prohibited by the puck-handling rules cited here. A goalie can skate out to play a live puck, but must follow the rules of the competition they are playing in—especially when handling the puck behind the goal line.
Where is the restricted area behind the net?
NHL, 2025–26
NHL Rule 27.8 says a goalie may not play the puck outside the designated area behind the net. The rule defines that area using lines that start six feet from either goalpost and extend to points 28 feet apart at the end boards. Playing the puck outside the area behind the goal line results in a minor penalty for delay of game.
IIHF, 2025/26
IIHF Rule 27.7 also restricts a goalie from playing the puck outside the designated area behind the net. Its text says the minor penalty is not assessed when the goalie plays the puck while maintaining skate contact with the goal crease. That exception is stated in the IIHF rule reviewed; do not assume it applies under NHL or other competition rules.

Do the same rules apply in every league?
No. The NHL and IIHF rulebooks above are separate competition rules and editions, not a universal rule for every level of hockey. USA Hockey’s official rules page could not be accessed for verification, so its exact current rule for this situation is not established here. The IIHF rules page lists a 2026/27 rulebook as its latest version, but the relevant clause in that edition was not available to verify. Check the rulebook for the specific league, level and season before relying on a penalty detail.
An older IIHF 2023/24 situation example says the goal line itself is not part of the restricted area. That is older interpretive context, not a substitute for checking the applicable current rulebook.

Is it physically safe to chase the puck?
The rules establish when a goalie may handle the puck; they do not establish whether a particular chase is physically safe. A goalie leaving the crease may face risks from speed, contact, an awkward stop or a puck taking an unexpected bounce. Treat rule permission as a legal boundary, not a safety guarantee, and use the applicable competition’s rules and safety guidance.
