Sony’s US PS5 software license prohibits modified software and tools that bypass console security, and Sony says it may restrict a console’s access to PlayStation services or suspend an account. Its public rules do not say every modified console will automatically be detected or sanctioned, or give a probability of enforcement. You cannot count on a particular console or account being safe.
What Sony’s rules say about a modified PS5
Sony’s US PS5 System Software License Agreement prohibits using unauthorized, illegal, counterfeit, or modified hardware or software with PS5 system software. It also prohibits tools that bypass, disable, or circumvent PS5 encryption, security, or authentication.
The license reserves a range of remedies if Sony Interactive Entertainment Inc. determines that its terms have been violated. These include disabling some or all system software, disabling the PS5’s online or offline use, ending access to PlayStation services, and denying warranty, repair, or other services. It also permits updates or other measures intended to stop unauthorized use.
Sony’s US PlayStation Network Terms of Service separately allow Sony to restrict, suspend, or terminate an account or PlayStation device if a user violates the terms or Sony reasonably believes a violation has or will occur. Sony also says it may upload updates to prevent devices from connecting to PlayStation Services.

What a console suspension means
Sony’s suspension guidance says a suspended console cannot be used to access any account, play games or modes that require online access, or access PlayStation Store purchases. That makes a console suspension different from an account-only restriction: switching to another account would not restore PlayStation access on that device.
What is—and is not—known about enforcement
Sony’s published terms establish that a modified PS5 can face service restrictions; they do not establish that every jailbroken console will be detected or banned automatically. The cited public materials also provide no enforcement rate or numerical estimate of the odds for a particular console or account. Claims that a specific setup is guaranteed safe, or that a ban is inevitable, go beyond what those documents say.

The practical point is that connecting a jailbroken console to PlayStation services creates a real risk under Sony’s rules, but the public policy cannot tell you whether or when Sony will act in an individual case. There is no supported safe workaround to rely on.

Sony’s UK system software guidance warns that unofficial update data or a console modified in any way may cause improper operation or prevent installation of official updates. It also warns that modifications may affect warranty or repair eligibility. Warranty terms and service eligibility can vary by market, so the UK guidance should not be treated as a statement of every region’s policy.

The cited legal documents are Sony’s US license, labeled version 1.12 on its page, and US Terms of Service; the support material on updates is from Sony’s UK site. They set out Sony’s stated rules and possible consequences, not a public detection method or a guarantee of how any individual case will be handled.
