Choose a Digital Edition if you are comfortable getting games through PlayStation Store and digital catalogs. A certified refurbished PS5 may suit buyers who value Sony’s stated warranty and can verify the exact model and return terms. Sony’s US pages list different storage configurations by model, and its January 2028 notice concerns how newly released PlayStation games will be sold—not whether today’s digital buyers can play future PS5 games.
What is the difference between a PS5 disc and Digital Edition?
The main difference is disc playback. Sony’s US buy page lists a 1 TB PS5 with a Blu-ray Disc drive that supports PS5 and PS4 games, as well as downloads from PlayStation Store. Its listed Digital Edition has 825 GB of storage and no built-in disc drive; it is intended for downloads and digital catalog access. These are the configurations on Sony’s US page, not universal specifications for every PS5 model or market. Sony’s US PS5 buy page
A disc model can still download games, so choosing it does not lock you into physical purchases. A Digital Edition, by contrast, cannot play a game disc unless it is a supported model paired with Sony’s removable drive. Digital games and catalogs depend on account and store access, and some services or features require an internet connection.
Which PS5 should you choose?
| Option | Best fit | Key trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 with disc drive | You own or expect to buy compatible PS5 or PS4 discs, borrow games, or want flexibility between discs and downloads. | Its listed 1 TB configuration is specific to Sony’s US page; check the exact model and current offer in your market. |
| PS5 Digital Edition | You buy through PlayStation Store or rely on a digital library or catalog, and do not need disc playback. | Sony’s US listing is 825 GB and has no drive. Physical discs are unavailable unless your exact model supports the add-on drive. |
| Certified refurbished PS5 | You want a Sony-certified option and the live offer’s savings justify choosing a refurbished product. | Confirm model, storage, included accessories, condition, return terms, and warranty before buying. |
| PS5 Pro | You prioritize enhanced visuals in supported games and have a display that can make those improvements worthwhile. | Sony’s US listing is 2 TB; Pro enhancements apply only to selected games and vary by title. |
There is no guaranteed lower-cost choice over the life of the console. The total depends on current prices, digital discounts, subscriptions, whether you borrow or resell discs, and—if applicable—the price of a compatible drive.

Choose the disc model for physical-game flexibility
Pick the disc PS5 if your existing collection includes compatible PS5 or PS4 discs, or if you want to borrow, buy used, or keep the option of physical purchases. It also supports digital downloads, so the drive preserves a choice rather than requiring you to buy every game on disc.
Choose Digital Edition for a digital-only routine
Digital Edition fits if you already buy games online and do not need to play discs. Library and catalog access depend on your account, store availability, and any relevant service requirements. Sony’s US certified refurbished digital listing says internet access and a PlayStation account are required; check the requirements for the specific product and services you use. Consider Pro only for supported-game visuals
Sony describes the US PS5 Pro as a 2 TB model with higher visual capabilities in games enhanced for Pro. It is not a separate game library or a requirement for playing upcoming PS5 games. Sony notes that enhancements are limited to selected titles and vary by game, so check whether the games you care about specifically support them. Sony’s US PS5 buy page
What does Sony’s January 2028 disc notice mean?
Sony’s US PS5 page says that from January 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only. It also says discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on the console. This is Sony’s stated policy for PlayStation games; it does not say that choosing Digital Edition changes access to future PS5 games, or establish a policy for games on other platforms. The notice therefore does not eliminate the disc model’s current uses: playing compatible older physical games and using discs you already own. It does mean that, under Sony’s stated policy, buying a disc drive is not a way to purchase newly released PlayStation games on disc after the cutoff.
Can you add a disc drive to a PS5 Digital Edition?
Yes, but only for specified model groups. Sony says its removable drive can be added to PS5 Digital Edition CFI-2000/2100 slim consoles and PS5 Pro. The drive must be paired with an internet connection during setup. Do not assume it works with every Digital Edition: check the model number on the console and confirm compatibility on Sony’s current product page before buying. Add the drive’s cost to the console price when comparing options. Sony’s US PS5 buy page

Is a refurbished PS5 worth it?
It can be, when the savings on the exact live offer are meaningful and the included warranty and return terms suit you. Sony says certified refurbished products are fully tested to the same functional standards as new PlayStation products. That is Sony’s description of its own recertification program, not an independent evaluation. Sony’s certified refurbished program
Sony Direct’s cited US refurbished slim Digital Edition listing is a 1 TB configuration and states a 12-month manufacturer warranty. Sony’s US refurb product page notes that minor cosmetic imperfections are possible. Those details describe that listing and program; they do not establish equivalent testing or warranty protection for consoles refurbished by third-party sellers. Available capacity may be lower than the listed SSD capacity because system software uses some storage. Sony Direct’s US refurbished Digital Edition listing

How much storage do you need?
Compare the capacity of the exact model you are considering: Sony’s US page lists 1 TB for its disc PS5, 825 GB for its Digital Edition, and 2 TB for PS5 Pro. Sony Direct’s cited US refurbished slim Digital Edition listing is 1 TB, illustrating that configurations vary. These figures are listed SSD capacities, not a promise that all of that space is available for games; system software uses some storage. Check the product listing and allow for the number and size of games you expect to keep installed.
