Yes—sometimes. A low-cost VPS can keep a simple prerecorded video loop going to YouTube, especially when the video is already encoded and the server only needs to send it. But whether a particular plan can do so reliably depends on sustained network capacity, transfer limits, provider policies, encoding workload and recovery setup. There is no universal minimum VPS size or guaranteed uptime established for this use.

What a low-cost VPS can—and cannot—do
A VPS is a virtual server in a provider’s data center. With FFmpeg, it can read a video file, loop it and send the output to YouTube’s live ingest. A 2026 guide from VPS provider Space-Node describes this pattern, including an OBS-based alternative. It demonstrates a setup approach, not a controlled benchmark or proof that every inexpensive plan will run it successfully.
The workload matters. Sending compatible, already-encoded media may require substantially less processing than continuously encoding or transforming video. The cited FFmpeg example uses libx264, which encodes with the server’s CPU. No available source establishes a minimum number of vCPUs or amount of RAM for a particular resolution, frame rate or quality target. Test the exact media and settings on the plan you intend to use.

Check the continuous network requirement first
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends H.264 at 3 Mbps for 720p30 and 5 Mbps for 1080p30. These are encoder recommendations, not VPS hardware specifications. A 24/7 stream must sustain its selected bitrate continuously, and the connection needs capacity beyond the nominal video rate to absorb variability. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate before going live and monitoring stream health while streaming. Its guidance puts it plainly: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
For video ingest, YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS and supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. YouTube transcodes incoming live video into formats for viewers; that does not remove the need for the VPS to deliver a stable feed to ingest.

Network usage also accumulates. At a fixed rate, a continuous stream sends roughly 32.4 GB per day at 3 Mbps or 54 GB per day at 5 Mbps, before protocol overhead or variation. These are calculated estimates, not a provider’s transfer allowance. Check whether the plan permits the sustained outbound traffic and whether its monthly quota and any overage terms can accommodate it.
Evaluate the VPS plan before committing
- Sustained CPU policy: Ask whether the plan can use its allocated CPU continuously, especially if FFmpeg will encode with libx264. A short burst allowance is not evidence that a server can maintain the workload indefinitely.
- Egress and transfer quota: Confirm outbound bandwidth, monthly transfer limits, overage charges and any traffic restrictions for continuous video.
- Host operations: Check how provider maintenance, reboots and outages are handled, and what support is available if the VPS becomes unreachable.
- Encoding path: Determine whether FFmpeg can copy the existing audio and video streams or must encode them. Test the actual codec, resolution, frame rate and content on the intended plan.
- Recovery responsibility: Decide who monitors the process and output, updates the host, and restarts the stream after faults.
Those details vary by provider and plan. There is no substantiated universal “cheap VPS” tier or price that guarantees a continuous YouTube stream.

What reliability requires beyond starting FFmpeg
A process that starts successfully is not proof that the audience will see an uninterrupted stream. An individual public VPS/FFmpeg project reports an intermittent packet or demuxer failure after several hours even though local CPU, frame-count and bitrate metrics did not reveal a YouTube playback problem. That account is an operational example, not a controlled reliability study, but it illustrates why process health and viewer-side playback are not the same thing.
Supervision that detects a failed process and restarts it can recover from some faults. It cannot guarantee that viewers will experience no interruption, or that every failure will be detected. A single VPS also remains one host and one path to YouTube.

YouTube’s HLS documentation describes sending a redundant second copy to a backup ingest URL. That is a separately configured redundancy option, not an automatic property of using one VPS. Choose based on the work you want to own, not only the advertised monthly server price. A VPS offers control, but you are responsible for configuring the encoder, checking the provider’s sustained-use and traffic terms, supervising the process and arranging recovery. A managed option can reduce server administration; compare its actual service limits and price with the cost of the VPS, transfer allowance and your time. The evidence here does not establish a quantified winner or justify recommending a particular VPS provider.
