After 90 days without the Leader logging in, Clash of Clans promotes the clan’s longest-serving active Co-Leader or Elder instead. If the clan has no eligible Co-Leader or Elder, the automatic rotation does not happen.
How the inactive-Leader rotation works
Supercell’s Losing Leadership Status support page describes a staged process. The countdown is based on the Leader not logging in; logging in during the process prevents the rotation.
| Time without the Leader logging in | What happens |
|---|---|
| 60 days | The clan receives a message explaining that leadership rotation will happen if the Leader remains inactive. |
| 74 days | The Leader receives a notification. |
| 83 days | The Leader receives a second notification, and the clan is notified again. |
| 90 days | The longest-serving active Co-Leader or Elder becomes Leader, if one is eligible. |
Supercell’s support page does not display a publication or revision date. These are its stated operational thresholds; check the official page for the current rule if it may have changed since its last update.
Who can become Leader automatically?
The successor must already be an active Co-Leader or Elder. Between eligible players, the longest-serving one is selected. An ordinary Member is not eligible, regardless of how long they have belonged to the clan: Supercell states that “Members are never automatically promoted to Leader.” Its Clan Roles page also covers role permissions and the rotation overview.

What if there is no eligible Co-Leader or Elder?
If the clan has no eligible Co-Leader or Elder, the automatic rotation cannot take place. Supercell suggests creating or joining a different clan in that situation. The support guidance does not describe a way for a regular Member to request an exception or trigger a transfer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How does a voluntary transfer differ?
If the current Leader is available, they can voluntarily promote a Co-Leader to Leader. This is different from automatic rotation: the Leader initiates the transfer, and a Member cannot make it happen on their own. Supercell says a confirmed voluntary transfer cannot be undone by Support; only the new Leader can pass leadership on. Support also cannot directly transfer leadership or restore a lost Leader role.
