Yes—prismarine itself is optional, but a conduit cannot work without an activation frame. You can build that frame from prismarine, dark prismarine, prismarine bricks, sea lanterns, or a combination of those full blocks. The frame must use the correct pattern around the conduit and contain the required water volume; placing a conduit underwater by itself does nothing.

When players ask whether conduits work without prismarine, they usually mean one of two things: whether the conduit item can be crafted without prismarine, or whether the placed conduit can activate without prismarine blocks nearby. These are separate mechanics.
Prismarine is not part of the conduit recipe. The official Minecraft article states: “A conduit is made by surrounding a Heart of the Sea with eight nautilus shells.” That recipe creates the conduit item. After you place it, the conduit still needs a qualifying activation frame. You may omit ordinary prismarine from that frame, but you may not omit the frame itself.

The accepted frame materials are:

These materials count toward the same activation threshold and range. There is no separate power level for dark prismarine, prismarine bricks, or sea lanterns. Choose the eligible blocks you can gather in sufficient quantity, then concentrate on the pattern and water placement.
How the activation frame is arranged
A conduit does not check for a pile of qualifying blocks somewhere in the surrounding ocean. The blocks have to occupy the frame pattern around the conduit. The reference pattern consists of three intersecting 5×5 open squares, with one square aligned to each of the three axes and centered on the conduit.

A block that is merely close to the conduit but outside one of those frame positions does not count. This is why a conduit can remain inactive even when it appears to have plenty of prismarine-type blocks nearby.
The conduit itself must be centered in a 3×3×3 volume of water enclosed by the frame. Water placement is part of the activation requirement, not just an aesthetic choice. Build the frame around the intended center, place the conduit at that center, and make sure the surrounding volume is water rather than an air pocket.

Only full blocks made from the eligible materials count for the activation frame. Prismarine-type slabs, stairs, and walls do not count toward activation according to the detailed conduit reference. Replacing a missing full block with one of those shapes can therefore leave the conduit inactive even if the outline looks complete.
Minimum frame, complete frame, and range
The minimum active frame contains 16 eligible full blocks. At that minimum, the conduit has a 32-block effective range. A complete frame contains 42 eligible blocks and reaches a 96-block effective range.

The 16-block figure is a minimum, not a target arrangement that can be scattered arbitrarily. Those 16 blocks still need to occupy valid positions in the intersecting-square design. Adding eligible blocks in the remaining frame positions increases the conduit’s effective range until the 42-block complete frame is reached.
The cited material does not provide a complete list of every intermediate block count and its corresponding range. Use the stated 32-block minimum and 96-block complete-frame values as the reliable planning points rather than assuming a linear range increase for every partial frame.

Step-by-step: build a conduit without ordinary prismarine
- Craft or obtain the conduit. The conduit recipe uses one Heart of the Sea and eight nautilus shells, as described by the official Minecraft article. Prismarine is not an ingredient in this recipe.
- Select an eligible frame material. Gather at least 16 full blocks from dark prismarine, prismarine bricks, or sea lanterns if you have no ordinary prismarine. You can mix all four eligible materials in one frame.
- Mark the center. Decide where the conduit will sit and reserve a 3×3×3 water volume around that center. The conduit must be centered in this water volume.
- Build the frame pattern. Place the eligible full blocks in the three intersecting 5×5 open squares centered on the conduit, with one square on each axis. Do not substitute slabs, stairs, or walls, and do not rely on random nearby blocks.
- Place the conduit at the center. Confirm that the conduit is inside the enclosed water volume and aligned with the frame’s center rather than offset to one side.
- Check the minimum count. Count the qualifying full blocks that occupy frame positions. You need at least 16 for activation. If you are building for maximum range, continue filling valid positions until the frame contains 42 eligible blocks.
- Test the result. If the conduit remains inactive, inspect the water volume, center position, block shapes, and frame geometry before adding more material. Extra blocks outside the pattern cannot compensate for a missing required position.
Why a conduit may stay inactive
There are enough blocks nearby, but not in the frame
The most common mistake is counting eligible blocks in the surrounding area rather than counting blocks in valid frame positions. Move or rebuild the blocks so they form the three intersecting 5×5 open squares around the conduit.
The frame uses slabs, stairs, or walls
Those shapes may look like prismarine construction, but they are excluded from the activation count in the detailed reference. Replace each required position with a full prismarine, dark prismarine, prismarine-brick, or sea-lantern block.
The conduit is not centered in water
Check the entire 3×3×3 volume around the conduit. The conduit needs to be centered in that water volume and enclosed by the frame. An offset conduit or an incorrectly filled volume can prevent activation even when the frame count is high enough.
The frame has fewer than 16 qualifying blocks
A partial-looking frame with 15 or fewer eligible full blocks does not meet the minimum. Add blocks in valid positions rather than placing a random cluster next to the structure.

The frame is complete-looking but the range is shorter than expected
Count the blocks again. The minimum 16-block frame gives a 32-block effective range; the 96-block value applies to the complete 42-block frame. A frame between those two states may have a range between the published endpoints, but the cited reference does not establish every intermediate value.

Choosing among the four eligible materials
For activation purposes, the four listed materials are equivalent. The decision is mainly about what is available in your world and whether you can supply enough full blocks for the pattern.
- Use dark prismarine if it is the easiest prismarine variant for you to gather.
- Use prismarine bricks if you prefer their appearance or already have them available.
- Use sea lanterns when you want eligible frame blocks that also serve as a light source.
- Mix materials when a single block type is scarce; mixed frames still use the same 16-block minimum and 42-block complete-frame threshold.
None of these alternatives removes the need for the frame geometry or water volume. A sea-lantern frame is not a shortcut, and a dark-prismarine frame does not activate from an arbitrary arrangement.

The conduit’s recipe and its frame often cause confusion because both are discussed in the same tutorials. The recipe consumes one Heart of the Sea and eight nautilus shells. The frame is built in the world after placement and uses the eligible blocks listed above. You therefore need the conduit item and a correctly constructed frame; crafting the item does not automatically activate it.

Minecraft’s official article describes activation at a high level as building a prismarine frame, while the detailed community reference enumerates the accepted alternatives, counts, exclusions, and ranges. What the published mechanics do—and do not—establish
The official source is strongest for the recipe and the general requirement for an activation frame. The exact list of accepted blocks, the three-square geometry, the 16- and 42-block thresholds, the 32- and 96-block ranges, the water-volume requirement, and the exclusions for slabs, stairs, and walls come from the community-maintained conduit reference.
The cited material does not establish an edition-by-edition comparison or a version-specific difference for these rules. Treat the figures here as the documented general mechanics represented by those references, and check the rules for a substantially modified game environment separately. Nothing in the cited sources indicates that ordinary prismarine has to be present when the other eligible full blocks are used correctly.
