Can a NAS Keep a Prerecorded YouTube Livestream Running 24/7?

A NAS can keep prerecorded video live on YouTube around the clock—but storage alone is not enough. Check encoder support, looping, bandwidth, and recovery first.

Yes, but only if the NAS can run a compatible encoder continuously. A NAS that stores or plays video is not automatically able to loop a file, encode it for YouTube Live, and recover when a connection drops. Check support for your exact NAS model and software before relying on it for an always-on broadcast.

What a NAS needs to do

YouTube Live needs an encoder: software or hardware that converts video into a digital stream and sends it to YouTube. For a prerecorded 24/7 broadcast, that encoder must also play and loop the source file. YouTube’s setup guide explains the encoder role at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

These are separate capabilities: storing a video on a NAS, playing it locally, broadcasting a camera feed, and looping a prerecorded file into YouTube Live. Confirm that the encoder available for your NAS explicitly supports the last task, plus reconnecting after an interruption.

How to set up a NAS-based stream

  1. Check channel eligibility. Enable live streaming for the YouTube channel and confirm it has no restrictions that would prevent the broadcast. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do this before your planned start.
  2. Choose an encoder for your exact NAS. Verify its operating-system and model compatibility, supported video formats and codecs, file-looping controls, and behavior after a network or process failure. Do not assume that a NAS’s built-in media player can act as a YouTube encoder.
  3. Create or select the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Copy YouTube’s stream URL and stream key into the encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Use the recommended RTMPS endpoint where your encoder supports it.
  4. Set the encoder output. Choose a resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate the NAS can encode and your internet connection can sustain. YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations include 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps; these are ingest bitrate recommendations, not the internet plan speed to buy. See YouTube’s encoder settings and resolution and bitrate guidance for current options and constraints.
  5. Configure playback and looping. Select the prerecorded file or playlist and enable repeat/loop in the encoder. Check that the end of one pass returns cleanly to the beginning, with no long gap, black frame, or missing audio.
  6. Test the entire chain. Confirm video and audio at the YouTube watch page, stream health in Live Control Room, NAS temperature and load, and the sustained upload rate. If practical, test for a meaningful period and verify that the encoder starts after a reboot and resumes after a dropped connection.

Bandwidth, power, and reliability checks

Leave upload headroom

YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the stream’s bitrate. For example, a stream using the published H.264 recommendation of 8 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps needs more than 8 Mbps of sustained upload capacity; the recommended 20% headroom is in addition to the encoded bitrate. Check real sustained upload performance, not just the connection’s advertised download speed. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream in its streaming tips.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Plan for outages and restarts

Check whether the encoder restarts automatically after a NAS reboot, resumes the file loop, and reconnects to YouTube. A UPS sized for the NAS and network equipment can help with brief power interruptions, but it cannot guarantee internet service or cover a prolonged outage. Disk access, cooling, network stability, and automatic process recovery all matter for unattended operation.

What 24/7 means for archives and playback

YouTube’s help documentation says completed streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its DVR guidance warns that DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. A continuous 24/7 stream therefore should not be treated as a guarantee of one complete replay or unlimited rewind history. If you need a full archive, keep and back up the original files separately and check YouTube’s current behavior in YouTube DVR guidance.

NAS, local encoder, or cloud service?

There is no universally best choice; compare control, setup work, failure recovery, and recurring costs alongside the hardware capability.

Approach Strength Check before choosing
StreamNeo — cloud service Always-on YouTube stream from the cloud, any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and the first day free. It plays uploaded videos rather than a camera feed; compare its upload workflow and service terms with your needs.
Run an encoder on the NAS Uses existing always-on storage hardware and keeps the files local. Exact model and OS support, encoding capacity, looping and reconnect behavior, heat, and stable upload.
Use a separate local encoder host Keeps encoding load off the NAS and can provide a wider choice of encoder software. Power use, file access from the NAS, unattended restart behavior, and the added device to maintain.
Use another cloud 24/7 service YouTube’s encoder page lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded streams. Verify the service’s current price, terms, limits, upload process, and vendor dependence; those details are not established here. YouTube notes that listed verified encoders are not made by YouTube.

Synology documents a Surveillance Station Live Broadcast feature for sending selected camera feeds to YouTube using an RTMP path and key, with H.264 support. That demonstrates a camera-broadcast capability in that product ecosystem, not confirmed looping of a prerecorded file. See Synology’s Live Broadcast documentation; verify the precise feature and compatibility for your NAS and software version.
