FFmpeg can loop a file indefinitely, while YouTube accepts encoder-based live streams using a stream URL and stream key. That makes the workflow possible, not automatically reliable: NAS capability, output settings, network stability, and recovery all need to be checked for your setup.
How the NAS-to-YouTube workflow works
- Store the prerecorded video where the NAS can read it reliably.
- Run FFmpeg on the NAS with the input looped indefinitely and read in real time.
- Send the output to YouTube’s ingest URL using the stream key from Live Control Room.
- Check YouTube’s live preview, playback access, audio and video quality, and monitor the stream while testing.
FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 for infinite input looping and -re for reading a file at its native frame rate, which is useful when sending a file in real time. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation and YouTube’s encoder guide.
What to verify on your NAS
FFmpeg support on the exact model
Check the NAS maker’s documentation for your model and operating system. Confirm whether FFmpeg is available as a supported native package or container, and whether it includes the codecs your workflow needs. Compatibility is model-dependent; the available documentation does not establish support for every NAS.
Processing load and video compatibility
If FFmpeg must transcode the video, the NAS needs enough sustained CPU capacity or supported hardware encoding for the chosen output. Sending video without re-encoding may reduce processing demands, but it does not remove the need to validate codec, container, audio, and YouTube compatibility. Do not infer a supported resolution or frame rate from the NAS brand alone.

Upload capacity and reliability
YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate, and warns that network disruption can break a stream. Plan for sustained, reliable upload rather than relying only on a speed-test peak. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.
Output settings
YouTube’s encoder settings list H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. Select bitrate for the specific resolution and frame rate; there is no single bitrate that fits every stream. Use RTMPS where supported and appropriate. Configure YouTube and protect the stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder configuration. YouTube describes the key as password-like; treat it as a credential, not public text.
- Choose RTMPS if your encoder supports it and you want YouTube’s recommended encrypted RTMP variant.
- Start with a test, inspect the live preview, and verify that the intended viewers can access playback before relying on the stream.
Keep the key out of public scripts and logs where practical. YouTube’s setup and key management details are in Manage live stream settings and its RTMPS instructions.
FFmpeg command shape—and what you must fill in
A representative command structure is:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 ... OUTPUT
This is a skeleton, not a ready-to-run command. The output muxer, codecs, bitrate, stream URL, key handling, and any transcoding options depend on the file and YouTube configuration. FFmpeg options apply to the next input or output, so put input options before the relevant -i. Consult the FFmpeg CLI documentation when constructing the full command.

Plan for failures; looping is not recovery
The loop option repeats the input, but it does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast or automatic reconnection. The NAS process, power, router, ISP connection, or YouTube ingest connection can fail. Test the exact setup, monitor YouTube’s preview and the outbound stream, and determine how your NAS handles a stopped process and power or network recovery. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing and monitoring; they do not establish that a NAS or FFmpeg will recover automatically.
Common symptoms and checks
- FFmpeg is unavailable: confirm package or container support for the NAS model and its operating system.
- Stuttering or dropped connection: check sustained upload capacity, the 20% headroom recommendation, and network interruptions.
- Rejected or unhealthy output: verify codecs, CBR, bitrate for the selected resolution and frame rate, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s encoder settings.
- Stream stops after an interruption: inspect FFmpeg and NAS process behavior, then test restart and reconnection handling; the input loop alone is not a reconnect mechanism.
- YouTube receives no feed: recheck the Live Control Room stream URL and key, and confirm the encoder is targeting the intended output.
Check channel eligibility and archive expectations
Technical setup does not ensure that a channel can go live or that its content meets YouTube’s rules. YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days; check the channel in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s live streaming tips on eligibility. Separately, follow YouTube’s copyright and content policies for the prerecorded material; owning or having permission to use a file is a distinct question from whether the NAS can stream it.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a continuous 24-hour broadcast will appear as one automatically archived video. If an archive matters, verify YouTube’s current behavior and plan session boundaries or a separate recording. The threshold is described in YouTube’s encoder guide.
