What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
No. In vanilla Minecraft, a Nether portal must be an upright rectangle, but it can be larger than the familiar 4-by-5 frame. The outer frame can measure from 4×5 blocks up to 23×23 blocks; the active opening inside it ranges from 2×3 to 21×21 blocks.
What sizes are valid?
Portal dimensions can refer either to the obsidian frame’s outside edges or to the opening that becomes active. The opening is two blocks narrower and two blocks shorter than the frame because the frame surrounds it.
| Measurement | Smallest | Largest |
|---|---|---|
| Outer obsidian frame | 4×5 blocks | 23×23 blocks |
| Active portal opening | 2×3 blocks | 21×21 blocks |
These are vertical rectangular portals, not arbitrary shapes or horizontal openings. The stated limits apply to vanilla Minecraft; modded games and custom servers may behave differently. Minecraft Wiki content on Nether portals
How small can you build one?
The minimum is an upright frame measuring 4 blocks wide by 5 blocks tall on the outside, with a 2-by-3-block opening. You can omit the four corner blocks, so this minimum frame needs 10 obsidian blocks rather than 14. Minecraft Wiki’s achievement guide

How large can you build one?
The maximum outer frame is 23 blocks wide by 23 blocks tall, producing an active opening of 21 by 21 blocks. The opening, rather than the obsidian border, is what the portal occupies; specifying which measurement you mean avoids the common two-block difference in both dimensions.
