Yes—a Nintendo Switch can become inoperable, but a frozen screen or a console that will not boot does not by itself prove that it is permanently damaged. Nintendo warns that updating a modified system or one using unsupported peripherals or software may leave it unable to operate. If your console is behaving abnormally, try Nintendo’s save-preserving maintenance-mode initialization before considering a full reset.
What “bricked” means for a Nintendo Switch
“Bricked” is an informal term for a device that appears unable to function. It is not a diagnosis: a frozen console, an update error, a black screen, and a system that will not power on can have different causes. Nintendo’s warning is specific: an update may make a modified Switch, or one using unsupported peripherals or software, inoperable. That warning does not establish that ordinary supported use commonly bricks consoles, and Nintendo’s reviewed support material does not quantify how often update failures occur. Nintendo’s system-update guidance also says abnormal configurations may be outside repair or warranty coverage.
Try maintenance mode before a full reset
If the console can reach maintenance mode, Nintendo recommends trying “Initialize Console Without Deleting Save Data” for an abnormal system before choosing full initialization. This removes other internal data, including software data, but keeps save data, screenshots and videos, user information, and the Nintendo Account link. You may need to download software again. Software data on the microSD card becomes unusable, although screenshots and videos stored on that card remain usable. See Nintendo’s initialization instructions.
- Turn the console completely off.
- Hold the volume “−” and “+” buttons, then press the power button once while continuing to hold both volume buttons.
- When maintenance mode appears, choose “Initialize Console Without Deleting Save Data” and follow the on-screen instructions.
Save-preserving initialization vs. full initialization

Full initialization returns the console to its purchased state, but it does not erase Nintendo Account purchase records. Linking the same account again can make eligible digital purchases available to download; discontinued titles may no longer be downloadable. Do not treat a full reset as data-safe or use it casually if local saves matter. Nintendo’s details are in its initialization guidance.

If the Switch will not power on
If the console cannot be powered on, you cannot initialize it through the console. Nintendo’s guidance for this situation focuses on account access, not hardware repair: remove the console’s virtual-game-card and shared-ticket registrations through the Nintendo Account website, then change the account password as a precaution. A failed console left registered for virtual game cards may prevent you from setting a card on another console. These steps do not repair the Switch or identify why it stopped working. Before replacing the console
If the old Switch still works, transfer users and save data before initializing it. Nintendo says an ordinary user transfer requires linked Nintendo Accounts and an internet connection, and some software save data cannot be transferred through that process. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is one example that requires a separate island-transfer process. Check Nintendo’s replacement-console instructions for the relevant transfer steps.

Check firmware information for your region
Nintendo’s regional support pages can show different system versions. On October 8, 2026, the Japanese page listed version 23.0.0, released September 10, 2026, while the Taiwan page listed version 23.0.1, released October 1, 2026. The reviewed pages do not explain the difference, so there is no single global “latest version” to infer from them. Check the official update page for your region; both pages carry the warning about modified systems and unsupported peripherals or software. Nintendo Support Japan: system updates.
