Saves, PS5 upgrades, disc access, console sharing and two-player use have separate rules, so signing in alone does not transfer everything or create two independent player profiles.
What the same account actually carries to PS5
Sign in on the PS5 with the PlayStation Network account used on the PS4. Sony says the account’s PlayStation Plus membership, trophies, friends and other account information sync to the new console: PlayStation’s PS5 preparation guide.

The account is the identity and license holder; saved progress is separate data stored on a console or in cloud storage. A PS4 save also may not work with the PS5 version of the same game.
How to sign in on both consoles
On PS5
- Open Settings.
- Select Users and Accounts.
- Choose Account, then Sign In.
- Enter the same PlayStation Network details used on PS4.
You can also add the account during the PS5’s initial setup.

On PS4
- Open Settings.
- Select Account Management.
- Choose Sign In.
- Enter the account’s credentials.
Menu wording can change with system-software updates, but the account remains the same. Do not give another player your password as a substitute for creating their own account.
Do PS4 games transfer to PS5?
Digital games
A digital PS4 purchase belongs to the purchasing PSN account, not permanently to the original PS4. After signing in, compatible titles appear in the PS5 Game Library and can be downloaded. Sony describes this access here: PS4 and PS5 connectivity information.
- A PS4 purchase does not automatically include a PS5-native version.
- Some publishers provide a free upgrade; others charge for it or sell a cross-generation bundle.
- PS4 and PS5 versions can use different save systems, trophy lists and downloadable content.
- A PlayStation Plus catalog game remains available only while the membership and catalog entitlement remain valid.
Check the individual PlayStation Store listing or publisher support page before assuming an upgrade is free.
Physical games
- A compatible PS4 disc works in a disc-equipped PS5.
- The disc normally must remain inserted as the license check.
- A PS5 Digital Edition cannot read PS4 discs.
- A disc does not automatically grant a digital PS5 copy unless the publisher’s upgrade policy says so.
Some PS4 games are not supported on PS5, so verify compatibility before selling or resetting the old console.
How to move PS4 saves to PS5
Signing in does not move saves stored only on the PS4. Choose one of these supported methods.

Direct network transfer
- Update both consoles to the latest available system software.
- Sign in to the same account on the source PS4 and destination PS5.
- Connect both consoles to the same network.
- On PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > Data Transfer > Continue.
- Follow the on-screen instructions and keep both consoles powered on.
Sony warns not to turn off either console, change network settings or run internet connection tests during the transfer because data could be damaged or lost. Depending on the source and timing, transfer can include user information, compatible saves, games, screenshots, clips and some settings. Sony’s full instructions are at PS4 and PS5 game and saved-data transfer.
After setup, the post-setup route transfers PS4 game saves only for the user currently signed in. Repeat the process for other users.
PlayStation Plus cloud storage
On PS4:
- Open Settings > Application Data Management.
- Select Saved Data in System Storage > Upload to Online Storage.
- Select the game and save file.
On PS5:
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Select Saved Data, then the relevant PS4 or PS5 category.
- Choose Download or Delete from Cloud Storage.
- Download the required save.
Sony currently lists up to 100 GB of PS4 saved data and 100 GB of PS5 saved data, with a 1,000-file limit for PS4 saves: PlayStation Plus online storage support. Confirm the upload before deleting, resetting or selling the PS4. A save from another person’s console may need to be uploaded manually rather than relying on automatic upload.

USB and game-specific conversion
Supported PS4 saves can be copied using Sony’s PS4 USB procedure. PS5 saved data cannot be copied to a USB drive in the same way, according to Sony’s transfer guide. Whether a PS4 save imports into a game’s PS5 version is decided by the developer and varies by title: Sony’s PS5 FAQ. Back up the old save before attempting an in-game conversion.
Do trophies and progress follow the account?
Trophies belong to the PSN account, so the account’s trophy history appears after you sign in on PS5. Game progress is different: it lives in save data. Some games automatically unlock PS5 trophies from PS4 progress; others require replaying objectives. Cross-save, cross-progression and publisher-account linking can impose additional rules.

Can two people share one PlayStation account?
They can sign in to the same account on both consoles, but that is not a supported way to create two independent players. One account has one identity, one trophy record, one friends list and shared online activity. Simultaneous sessions may conflict, and a game or publisher can impose its own one-account or one-session restriction.
For two people, share the license through the consoles and keep player identities separate:
- The purchaser’s account owns the game and subscription.
- That account activates the household PS4 as its primary PS4.
- It enables Console Sharing and Offline Play on one PS5.
- The second player signs in with a separate PSN account.
Each player then has separate saves, trophies, friends and online identity.
How to share games and selected PlayStation Plus benefits
Activate the primary PS4
- On PS4, open Settings > Account Management.
- Select Activate as Your Primary PlayStation 4.
- Choose Activate.
Each account can have one primary PS4. Activating another PS4 deactivates the previous one. Sony documents remote deactivation, which is limited to once every six months, at the primary PS4 activation guide.
Enable PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play
- On PS5, open Settings > Users and Accounts.
- Select Other.
- Choose Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Select Enable.
Only one PS5 can have this setting enabled for the account at a time. One primary PS4 and one designated PS5 can be active simultaneously: Sony’s PS5 console-sharing guide.

What other accounts may use
- Selected purchased games and media.
- Online multiplayer where PlayStation Plus is required.
- Some PlayStation Plus benefits.
- Downloaded Monthly Games.
- Some Game Catalog or Classics Catalog titles, depending on the membership plan.
What is not shared
- The owner’s PlayStation Plus discount for purchases.
- Redeeming PlayStation Plus games onto another account.
- Online storage.
- Automatic patch downloads.
- Early access to time-limited trials.
Sony lists the complete limitations at PlayStation Plus sharing support. The purchaser retains ownership; console sharing grants access under the designated-console arrangement.

Can PS4 and PS5 players play together?
Yes, but only in games whose creators enable cross-generation multiplayer. It is not a universal PlayStation feature. Check whether players are using the PS4 or PS5 version, whether the game separates its player pools, and whether each player needs a publisher account.
Most paid games require PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer; many free-to-play games do not. See PlayStation Plus support for current requirements. Cross-play with Xbox or PC is a separate feature from PS4–PS5 cross-generation play.

“I signed in, but my save is missing.”
- Check the original PS4’s local save.
- Confirm the PS4 user and PSN account are the same.
- Upload the save manually to PlayStation Plus cloud storage, then download it on PS5.
- Check whether the game supports importing a PS4 save into its PS5 version.
- Do not overwrite a newer save before backing it up.
“My digital game has a padlock.”
Confirm that the purchasing account is present, the PS4 is activated as primary or PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled, the subscription or catalog entitlement is active, and the console is online for license verification. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance is included in the PS5 console-sharing support page.
“The other account cannot play my game.”
Check that the owner’s account remains on the console, the correct PS4/PS5 designation is active, and the game is owned rather than a temporary or expired subscription benefit.

“The game will not let both players connect.”
Verify cross-generation support, the version each player is running, separate PSN or publisher accounts, required PlayStation Plus memberships and the game’s server status. Do not assume the account setup is the cause.
“Sharing stopped after I changed consoles.”
Only one PS4 can be primary and only one PS5 can have Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled for an account. Deactivate the previous console where possible before enabling the new one.
Best setup for each household
One person upgrading
Use the same PSN account, transfer or upload saves, re-download digital games, and keep the PS4 for unsupported titles.
A household keeping both consoles
Use one owner account for purchases, designate one primary PS4, enable sharing on one PS5, and give every player a separate PSN account.
Two people playing the same game
Use separate accounts, verify cross-generation multiplayer, and check whether the title requires two copies, a publisher account or two PlayStation Plus memberships.
Replacing or selling the PS4
Transfer or upload saves first, verify them on PS5, deactivate the old PS4, sign out and remove payment methods before resetting it.
The Bottom Line
Rule of thumb: use one account for one person across PS4 and PS5; use primary-PS4 activation and PS5 Console Sharing for household access; use separate PSN accounts for separate players.
