Which PS5 models can use the disc drive?
Sony’s official add-on is the CFI-ZDD1 series. Sony lists compatibility with the CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 model groups (newer slim hardware) and the CFI-7000 group (PS5 Pro). The original CFI-1000 Digital Edition is not compatible and cannot play disc-based games or media. Sony’s product listing and setup guide identify compatible models; Sony’s disc playback support page explains the CFI-1000 limitation.
- Compatible: CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 slim models, plus PS5 Pro CFI-7000.
- Not compatible: Original CFI-1000 Digital Edition.
“PS5 Digital Edition” alone is not enough to establish compatibility: the original and slim Digital Edition are different hardware generations. Match the CFI model group printed on the console or its packaging to Sony’s compatibility information before ordering.
What can the add-on play?
Once installed, the drive supports DVD movies as well as Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. Sony also lists DVD-ROM, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, and AVCHD, along with BD-ROM, BD-R, and BD-RE formats subject to stated exceptions. Compatible PS4 Blu-ray game discs and PS5 game discs work, too. Insert a supported movie disc and its media player appears on the PS5 media home. Sony lists supported and unsupported disc formats.

It is not a general-purpose CD drive or a way to play every older PlayStation game. The PS5 does not support audio CDs, and Sony says PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3 software cannot be played from disc. Unsupported formats also include BD-RE version 1.0, BD-R/RE XL, and DVDs that have not been finalized. DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW support does not guarantee every home-recorded disc will play; recording quality, encoding, scratches, dust, and manufacturing variations can affect playback.
A DualDisc’s audio-only side cannot be played, though its DVD-standard side may be compatible. Do not insert 8 cm, non-circular, cracked, repaired, sticker-covered, or paper-labeled discs; Sony warns these can damage the console. The drive manual provides further disc and handling limitations.

How to install Sony’s drive
The CFI-ZDD1 is not a USB DVD drive. It attaches to the compatible console after you remove an exterior cover. Sony’s official setup instructions give the current model-specific guidance; the basic process is:
- From the Control Center, select Power > Turn Off PS5. Disconnect the AC cable and other cables, then let the console cool.
- Place the console bottom-up on a soft cloth with its front facing you. Remove the short horizontal stand feet, then lift off the circular side cover.
- Align the drive’s clips with the two marked holes and press it firmly into place until it clicks.
- Fit the replacement circular cover and attach the longer horizontal stand feet supplied with the drive.
- Reconnect the cables and turn on the console. An internet connection is required to pair the drive with the PS5 during initial setup.
The package includes the drive, a replacement white cover, two horizontal stand feet, and a manual. Keep the console’s original cover and short feet: you will need them if you remove the drive and restore the disc-less configuration.

DVD region codes: a limit for imported movies
The add-on is not automatically region-free. Sony’s manual says the DVD region code is set to the region of the first DVD played, and the console’s BD/DVD region code can be changed up to four times. If you watch imported DVDs from multiple regions, check their region codes and consider that limit before switching regions. See the drive manual for Sony’s region-code details.

For a compatible PS5 owner who wants both movie playback and physical-game support, the official drive adds those capabilities without replacing the console. Whether it is cheaper than changing consoles depends on the drive’s current price, the cost of a disc-edition PS5, and what you could recover by selling your existing hardware. Sony’s US Direct listing did not expose a current dollar price in its product text on August 18, 2026, so check the live listing rather than relying on an older price. Check Sony’s current listing.

The add-on is a poor fit if your console is CFI-1000, you mainly want to play audio CDs or PS1–PS3 discs, or you buy all games digitally. If DVD playback is your only goal, compare the drive with a standalone player rather than paying for game-disc capability you will not use. No current Sony price is stated here; compare live prices before deciding.
