Can a Raspberry Pi 4 Stream 720p Video to YouTube Live with FFmpeg?

Yes, with an important qualification: Raspberry Pi lists the Pi 4 Model B as capable of H.264 encoding at up to 1080p30, so 720p is within its published encoding capability. YouTube Live accepts H.264 over RTMP or RTMPS. But those specifications do not guarantee that a particular camera, FFmpeg build, Pi setup, and internet connection will sustain a live stream. Start with 720p30, test the complete setup, and watch YouTube’s stream-health feedback.

What the Pi 4 must do to stream

A live setup has three jobs: capture or receive video, encode it into a format YouTube accepts, and send it continuously to YouTube’s ingest server. A Pi’s video-encoding specification addresses only part of that chain. The capture device, operating system, FFmpeg build and available encoder, audio configuration, thermal and power conditions, and upload connection can all affect the result.

Raspberry Pi’s Pi 4 Model B specification lists “H.265 (4kp60 decode), H264 (1080p60 decode, 1080p30 encode).” That establishes a published H.264 encode capability up to 1080p30; it is not a measured guarantee for every 720p FFmpeg pipeline. See the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B specifications.

Recommended 720p settings for YouTube Live

Setting Starting point Why it matters
Resolution and frame rate 1280 × 720 at 30 fps 720p30 is a conservative starting point. The Pi 4 specification cites 1080p30 encoding, but does not certify a particular FFmpeg capture-to-stream configuration.
Video codec H.264 YouTube Live lists H.264 as a supported video codec.
Video bitrate 8 Mbps recommended; 3 Mbps minimum for 720p H.264 at both 30 and 60 fps These are YouTube’s published encoder-setting values, not a Pi throughput measurement. Choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain reliably.
Rate control CBR YouTube recommends constant bitrate for live encoding.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds; no more than 4 seconds YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and sets four seconds as the maximum interval.
Transport RTMPS when available YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP.

For the official values and protocol guidance, see YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. Although YouTube lists the same 8 Mbps recommended video bitrate for 720p60, treat 60 fps as a configuration to validate, not a capability guaranteed by the Pi 4 specification. It adds capture and encoding workload, and smoother motion is useful only if the entire pipeline keeps up.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Check your input and FFmpeg build before choosing a command

There is no single safe, verified FFmpeg command for every Pi 4 setup: the input could be a Pi camera, USB camera, HDMI capture device, or a video file, and available encoders and device paths vary by software release and driver. First identify the actual input and the encoder your installed FFmpeg exposes. Do not assume a hardware encoder is available just because the board has H.264 encode capability.

If you are using a Raspberry Pi camera, the Picamera2 manual documents H.264 encoding controls such as dimensions, frame rate, bitrate, profile, and intra-frame interval. It also notes that the libav backend uses hardware H.264 encoding when present. That documentation is relevant to the camera workflow; it does not provide one universal FFmpeg command for all inputs or releases.

  • Confirm the capture device is detected and that FFmpeg can read from it.
  • Check the installed FFmpeg build’s available encoders and select an encoder it actually provides.
  • Confirm the chosen encoder can produce H.264 at the intended resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval.
  • Plan how audio enters the stream. A video-only setup will not carry the microphone or program audio you expect.

Prepare YouTube and test the complete stream

  1. Set up the live stream in YouTube Studio. Create or select the stream and obtain its server address and stream key. Use the RTMPS endpoint where available, in line with YouTube’s recommendation.
  2. Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: do not publish it in a command, screenshot, shared configuration, or log. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio before relying on the stream again.
  3. Configure the encoder. Start at 1280 × 720, 30 fps, H.264, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval. Use YouTube’s 8 Mbps recommended video bitrate only if your connection has stable headroom for video, audio, and normal network variation; otherwise test a lower bitrate while staying at or above YouTube’s published 3 Mbps minimum for 720p H.264.
  4. Check upload capacity. Run an upload speed test and judge the connection by what it can sustain reliably, not just a brief peak result. YouTube advises choosing a quality appropriate to the available connection.
  5. Run a controlled test before depending on the setup. Use a private, unlisted, or otherwise controlled test and include realistic motion and audio. Check that YouTube receives the signal and review its stream-health feedback while the Pi is sending.
  6. Monitor a real broadcast. Keep an eye on YouTube’s stream health and the Pi’s encoding and connection behavior. A successful short test is useful, but does not establish that different inputs, longer sessions, or changing network conditions will behave identically.

Common problems and what to check

  • YouTube receives no video: Check the ingest address and stream key, confirm FFmpeg is reading the intended input, and verify that the selected encoder is available in your installed build.
  • The picture stutters or frames are lost: Check YouTube’s stream-health feedback and the stability of the upload connection. Try a lower resolution or frame rate, or reduce the bitrate while remaining within YouTube’s published guidance; retest with the same motion and audio you expect to stream.
  • 720p60 does not run reliably: Return to 720p30 first. The Pi 4 specification lists 1080p30 H.264 encoding, not certification of a particular 720p60 FFmpeg pipeline. Confirm that both capture and encoding can sustain 60 fps before trying again.
  • The stream connects but audio is missing: Check that the chosen audio input is active and that the outgoing stream includes audio. Test the complete program, rather than validating video alone.
  • The stream key appears in a log or screenshot: Treat it as exposed and replace it in YouTube Studio. Do not paste secrets into commands or support posts that may be shared.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health despite a good speed-test result: A speed test does not prove a stable stream under real conditions. Test at the intended bitrate and monitor YouTube’s feedback during a realistic pre-live run.

Copyright and YouTube channel rules still apply

Using FFmpeg or a Raspberry Pi does not change YouTube’s rules for the material you broadcast. Use video and audio you own or are licensed to stream, and check rights for music, game footage, and other third-party material before going live. A technical stream that connects successfully is not evidence that its content complies with YouTube’s policies or that a channel qualifies for monetization.
