Yes, a Raspberry Pi 4 can send a prerecorded video to YouTube Live, but whether it is cheaper in India depends on costs you already have. The most practical setup is an already-owned Pi 4, a compatible video prepared on another computer, and stable home broadband. Use FFmpeg stream copy rather than asking the Pi to re-encode the video.
There is no verified current India parts bill or measured Pi 4 electricity cost here, so a new Pi 4 cannot be declared cheaper than a VPS or managed service. Published Pi cost estimates cited below refer to a Pi 5, not a Pi 4.
What the Pi 4 can do—and what it cannot prove about cost
A Raspberry Pi 4 can act as a small encoder and send a prerecorded video to YouTube Live. A documented project uses a Pi 4 Model B for YouTube RTMP streaming, and Pi-specific guidance describes looping a compatible prerecorded file with FFmpeg stream copy. These examples establish a plausible method, not a controlled benchmark for every Pi 4 configuration or a guarantee of 24/7 operation.
The cost case is strongest when you already own the Pi, can use existing broadband with adequate sustained upload, and are comfortable setting up and maintaining Linux. If buying hardware specifically for this job, compare the full upfront cost and ongoing power, connectivity, maintenance and failure-recovery costs. A provider-authored estimate for a Pi 5 must not be treated as a Pi 4 price.

How to loop a prerecorded video from the Pi
1. Prepare a YouTube-compatible source
Make and validate the video on another computer if possible. Stream copy passes through the existing video without converting or repairing it; it will not make an incompatible file acceptable. Check that the audio and video play correctly, and listen and watch across the loop point for an abrupt seam.
YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted transmission. For H.264, its recommended bitrates include 10 Mbps at 1080p30, 8 Mbps at 720p30 and 4 Mbps at 480p30. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a promise that a particular broadband connection can sustain them around the clock. See YouTube’s encoder settings and live-stream guidance.

2. Configure the YouTube broadcast and protect the key
Create or schedule the live broadcast in YouTube Studio and retrieve its stream key and ingest URL from the stream setup. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, commit it to a public repository or leave it exposed in a shared script. Use the ingest protocol and settings supported by your broadcast. Keep a secure copy so you can recover from a configuration mistake.
3. Install FFmpeg and test a stream-copy loop
A documented Pi-oriented pattern uses FFmpeg options -re -stream_loop -1, video stream copy with -c:v copy, AAC audio and FLV output to a YouTube RTMP endpoint. The pattern is illustrative; substitute your actual file and ingest details, and follow the guide for the required command syntax rather than assuming every source works unchanged. Stream copy avoids video re-encoding but does not fix unsupported codecs, unsuitable timestamps or other source problems. The Pi loop guidance is at StreamNeo’s Raspberry Pi YouTube Live guide.

Start with a private or unlisted test broadcast if that suits your channel and check that both picture and sound arrive. YouTube’s official guidance says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream. During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.” Keep YouTube Studio’s stream-health view open during the test and resolve warnings before leaving the stream unattended.
4. Automate only after the manual test succeeds
For unattended use, configure a systemd service to start the FFmpeg process at boot and restart it if it exits. A restart policy can recover from a process failure; it cannot correct an expired or incorrect stream key, a missing or corrupt file, invalid settings or a broken operating system. Test the complete reboot and reconnect path, not just the command in a terminal.

What a reliable 24/7 installation needs
- Dependable upload: Test upload at both busy and quiet times. Set the stream below the capacity you can reliably sustain and leave headroom for other household use. Download speed alone says little about the outgoing stream. Household traffic, ISP fair-use limits and outages can affect continuity.
- Appropriate encoding workload: Prefer passing through a compatible prepared file. If you must transcode, results depend on the exact board, operating-system image, FFmpeg build, resolution, filters and sustained conditions. A short successful test does not establish that a Pi 4 can re-encode a particular format continuously.
- Cooling and power: Keep airflow clear and observe temperature and throttling during a long run. Use a stable power supply; a UPS can help with some power interruptions but will not solve an internet outage.
- Storage and recovery: Keep backups of source media and configuration. Logs and repeated writes can wear or corrupt storage, so have a tested recovery or replacement plan.
- Port guidance in context: India’s National Informatics Centre says its agency-fed webcast setup needs outbound RTMP port 1935 and 2–4 Mbps dedicated bandwidth per stream. That is contextual guidance for its webcast service, not a YouTube-specific requirement; YouTube’s own ingest settings are the relevant authority for a YouTube stream.
Compare the costs over the same period
A fair comparison includes hardware bought for the project, electricity, broadband or data limits, setup and troubleshooting time, and any VPS or managed-service charges. Your Pi’s marginal cost is different if it is already on hand. Tariffs, upload capacity, outages and the value of your maintenance time also vary.
StreamNeo’s comparisons are provider-authored, not independent measurements. Its comparison published 3 July 2026 gives an estimated ₹100–₹150 monthly operating cost and ₹8,000 upfront cost for a Raspberry Pi setup, but the article identifies that example as a Raspberry Pi 5. It also lists a DIY VPS estimate of ₹300–₹800 per month and its managed service at ₹999 per month. Do not carry the Pi figures over to a Pi 4 or treat the estimates as a universal bill.

A separate StreamNeo India comparison published 26 July 2026 estimates desktop electricity at ₹605–₹1,152 for 30 days, using assumed desktop draw of 120–200 W and marginal electricity at ₹7–₹8 per kWh. That is a desktop example, not a Pi 4 measurement. It also estimates that a 4.5 Mbps stream sends about 2 GB per hour or roughly 1.4 TB in 30 days; actual transfer depends on bitrate and runtime. Check your own ISP’s allowance and terms.
| Option | What is established | Costs and trade-offs to check |
|---|---|---|
| Existing Raspberry Pi 4 at home | A prepared compatible loop using stream copy is plausible; no Pi 4 India total cost is verified. | Marginal power, existing broadband and upload allowance, setup time, reliability and maintenance. |

| VPS running FFmpeg | A Linux host can run headless FFmpeg in copy mode; the cited estimates are provider-authored, and no provider-specific price is independently established here. | Compute, data transfer, region, taxes and extras, plus updates, monitoring and recovery work. |
| Managed loop service | StreamNeo publishes its own monthly India price; that is a provider figure. | Recurring fee, service terms, file and storage limits, support, recovery and reliance on the provider. |
Or let it run in the cloud
Instead of maintaining a Pi at home, you can upload a recording to StreamNeo, add your YouTube stream key once and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud to YouTube, so nothing has to stay powered on at home. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. For a monthly term, the price is $9.99 per month.
