Yes, a Raspberry Pi can run an encoder that sends video to YouTube Live, and looping prerecorded videos is technically plausible. But the available official guidance does not certify a particular Pi setup for uninterrupted 24/7 playback. Reliability depends on the Pi’s workload, power, cooling, internet connection, and recovery plan—not just whether the stream starts.
What a Raspberry Pi can—and cannot—be assumed to do
Raspberry Pi documented a Pi Zero project using FFmpeg and Docker to stream video in 2017. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain how to send an encoder’s output using its live server URL and a stream key. Together, those establish that a Pi can be used in an encoder workflow. They do not establish a tested, current Raspberry Pi configuration that will loop prerecorded videos continuously without interruption.
This is a stream from files, not a live camera broadcast: the Pi reads prerecorded media and an encoder sends it to YouTube. YouTube processes incoming video for different playback formats, so the Pi does not need to generate every viewer resolution itself. A Pi’s ability to decode a format also does not guarantee that it can transcode that format in real time.
Choose hardware and media for the workload
Raspberry Pi 5 as a current example
Raspberry Pi 5 has a 2.4 GHz quad-core processor, hardware decoding for 4Kp60 HEVC, Gigabit Ethernet, microSD storage, and PCIe storage options. Raspberry Pi recommends a quality 5V/5A USB-C power supply and says active cooling helps the board perform at its best. These specifications describe the hardware; they are not a 24/7 streaming performance guarantee.

Reduce unnecessary processing
Use media compatible with the stream profile you intend to send. Where your software workflow allows it, avoid re-encoding compatible source media; transcoding adds work and can make a marginal setup less reliable. If conversion is necessary, test the actual files and settings on the Pi rather than inferring performance from its video-decoding specification.
Prepare YouTube Live and the encoder
- Enable live streaming on the channel. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so complete this before the planned launch.
- Install an encoder on the Pi. FFmpeg was used in Raspberry Pi’s historical streaming example. Configure the encoder to read the chosen media and send its output to YouTube.
- Set the YouTube destination. Enter YouTube’s live server URL and the stream key in the encoder. The stream key connects the encoder to the channel’s live stream, so treat it as a secret: do not publish it or include it in material you share.
- Choose settings that fit both the source and connection. Select resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio configuration. Use YouTube’s published ingest guidance below as a starting point, then test representative video and audio and watch stream health.
- Test the whole loop before relying on it. Confirm that playback advances through the intended videos, audio is present, the stream reaches YouTube, and the Pi remains stable under the real workload. A successful short test does not prove uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
Use YouTube’s encoder recommendations
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for video, AAC or MP3 for audio, constant-bitrate (CBR) encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. For H.264, YouTube’s recommended bitrates are:

| Output | Recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube platform recommendations, not measured Raspberry Pi performance results. Choose a profile that the Pi can handle and that your upstream connection can sustain reliably; YouTube recommends testing upload speed and prioritizing a stable connection. Do not select a bitrate solely because it is the highest figure in the table.

Plan for failures and broadcast length
A 24/7 service needs more than a working encoder command. Power loss, network interruption, a stalled encoder, or playback failure can end a broadcast. For unattended operation, arrange a way to restart the encoder after failure and monitor the stream after launch. The reviewed official sources do not promise that a Raspberry Pi setup will recover automatically or remain live continuously; recovery and monitoring must be part of your own plan.
Plan broadcast sessions with YouTube’s archive behavior in mind: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a single broadcast running longer than that will be archived intact. If an archive matters, plan how to end and restart sessions and verify the resulting recordings.

Copyright and monetization are separate from technical feasibility
Only stream videos and audio you have the rights to use. Permission to use material does not by itself guarantee monetization: YouTube’s reused-content policy applies channel-wide and may make copied content with minimal changes ineligible even when the creator has permission. Its monetization policy also identifies repetitive or mass-produced material as potentially ineligible “inauthentic content.” Copyright enforcement and monetization eligibility are separate questions, and neither a Raspberry Pi nor looping a video resolves them.

Common problems and what to check
- The channel will not accept a live stream: confirm live streaming is enabled and allow for YouTube’s stated first-time activation period, which can take up to 24 hours.
- YouTube shows no incoming stream: check that the encoder is using the correct live server URL and stream key, and that the key belongs to the intended channel event. Keep the key private.
- The stream drops or becomes unstable: check upstream bandwidth and connection stability, then reduce the output profile or bitrate if needed. Inspect YouTube’s stream-health information and the encoder’s status.
- The Pi struggles during playback: check whether the workflow is transcoding unnecessarily, whether the selected format and output profile are compatible, and whether the board has suitable power and cooling.
- The stream plays but the archive is missing or incomplete: check session duration. YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours; do not rely on an over-12-hour broadcast being archived intact.
- A video is blocked, claimed, or not eligible for monetization: review the rights to every element and YouTube’s channel-wide reused-content and inauthentic-content policies. Technical uptime does not establish permission or monetization eligibility.
When to use a Pi, and when to use a cloud service
A Pi keeps the encoder and playback workload in your hands: you supply the hardware, maintain its power and network, handle media compatibility, and monitor or restore the process. That can suit a technically comfortable owner who wants local control and accepts those responsibilities. A cloud service shifts the always-on playback workload away from a home computer; compare the ongoing cost with the hardware and maintenance you would otherwise take on.
For a cloud option, StreamNeo is #1 to consider: it keeps prerecorded YouTube video running from the cloud, at any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and the first day is free.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer does not have to stay on at home. Each slot supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
