Yes, a Vultr virtual server can plausibly run an encoder that loops a pre-recorded video to YouTube Live around the clock. That is technical feasibility, not a guarantee that a particular Vultr plan will stay live without interruption. You must verify sustained CPU and outbound network capacity, account for transfer costs, configure the encoder correctly, and monitor a real run.
What you need for a 24/7 stream
The setup has four parts: a YouTube channel eligible to livestream, an encoder that can continuously read and loop your video, a Vultr instance with enough sustained resources, and a stable path from that instance to YouTube. YouTube’s setup guidance says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. You create a stream in YouTube, then configure the encoder with the stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance explains the channel and stream setup.
- Video source: Keep the file accessible to the encoder throughout the stream. Stage it on the instance or use storage the encoder can read reliably; allow enough disk space if you download it locally.
- Compute: Vultr describes Cloud Compute instances as shared-CPU virtual machines. Choose based on the encoder’s CPU and memory demands, storage, and bandwidth needs; the available documentation does not specify a minimum instance size for this workload. See Vultr Compute documentation and Vultr provisioning guidance.
- Recovery and monitoring: Set up a way to restart the encoder if it exits, alert on failures, and monitor both YouTube’s stream health and Vultr’s outbound usage. A restart policy helps recover from process failure, but it does not prove uninterrupted service.
Set the YouTube encoder for 1080p
Choose the resolution and frame rate to match the source and intended broadcast. YouTube’s live encoder settings recommend H.264 at 5 Mbps for 1080p30 or 6 Mbps for 1080p60. These are video bitrates; leave room for audio and transport overhead. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS for encrypted delivery. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings before configuring your encoder.
- Video codec: H.264.
- Video bitrate: 5 Mbps at 1080p30; 6 Mbps at 1080p60.
- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframes: Every two seconds.
- Ingest: RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended secure delivery option.
YouTube advises leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and warns that network disruption can break a stream. That is a useful planning margin, not a promise of performance from a Vultr plan. The instance’s actual sustained network capacity under your workload matters more than assuming a nominal bandwidth figure is a dedicated upload guarantee. YouTube’s streaming tips say: “Have enough bandwidth: The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.”

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Estimate bandwidth and transfer costs
At a constant bitrate, the video payload alone works out to roughly 54 GB per day at 5 Mbps, or 64.8 GB per day at 6 Mbps. Over 30 days, that is about 1.62 TB or 1.944 TB respectively. These are calculations from the bitrate using decimal units; they exclude audio, protocol overhead, retransmission, and other traffic. Treat them as planning estimates and compare them with your actual metering.
Vultr says internet-bound outbound transfer counts toward bandwidth usage, while inbound traffic is not metered for this purpose. Its documentation describes a 2 TB monthly free account bandwidth allocation in addition to instance allocations, and an overage rate of $0.01 per GB after applicable allocation is exceeded. The documents were updated in 2025; account allocation and billing terms can vary or change, so check the current Vultr console and pricing terms before estimating your bill. See Vultr bandwidth overage documentation and Vultr bandwidth caps documentation. The bitrate-based transfer estimate does not establish your final monthly charge.

Build and test the do-it-yourself setup
- Confirm YouTube eligibility. Verify the channel and check that it has no live-streaming restrictions from the previous 90 days. In YouTube, create the stream or event and obtain its ingest URL and stream key. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Prepare the source file. Put the video where the encoder can read it continuously. Confirm it plays correctly, including its audio, and that the instance has sufficient disk space if the file is stored there. Configure the encoder to repeat or loop the source; the precise loop command depends on the encoder you choose.
- Configure output. Set the chosen 1080p frame rate, corresponding H.264 bitrate, CBR, two-second keyframes, and YouTube’s RTMPS ingest URL and stream key. Include audio settings compatible with your source and leave network capacity for audio and overhead.
- Check instance capacity under load. Observe CPU and memory while the encoder runs. If the video is already encoded and the encoder can pass it through, the workload may differ from one that must encode video in real time; test your actual file and configuration rather than assuming a minimum instance size.
- Preview before going public. Use YouTube Live Control Room to check stream health, picture, audio continuity, and dropped frames. YouTube recommends testing before a live broadcast; follow its streaming tips.
- Run a representative endurance test. Keep the intended stream running while checking encoder logs, YouTube health, and Vultr outbound usage. Test what happens if the encoder process stops and whether your restart and alerting setup responds. The available guidance does not define a test duration that certifies a server for 24/7 operation.
What can break, and how to diagnose it
- YouTube reports insufficient or unstable bandwidth: Check the instance’s real sustained outbound capacity and current transfer conditions. Reduce the bitrate or frame rate if necessary, and preserve the recommended 20% headroom rather than sizing exactly to the video bitrate.
- Dropped frames or poor stream health: Compare encoder load and network stability. High CPU use can indicate the instance cannot sustain the chosen encoding workload; network fluctuation can also disrupt delivery. Test the actual configuration before relying on it.
- The broadcast ends when the source finishes: Confirm that the encoder is configured to loop the file and that the source remains accessible. A process supervisor can restart an exited encoder, but restart behavior should be tested rather than assumed.
- The stream does not connect: Recheck the RTMPS URL and stream key, confirm the channel can livestream, and verify that the encoder is using the intended settings. Regenerate or replace a compromised key through YouTube’s controls.
- The bill exceeds your estimate: Compare Vultr’s metered outbound transfer with the bitrate-only estimate. Audio, overhead, retransmissions, other outbound traffic, and the account’s applicable allocation can change the total.
Can you call it reliable 24/7?
Not from the server type or encoder settings alone. No end-to-end Vultr-to-YouTube endurance test or plan-specific guarantee is established here, and performance depends on the instance, region, workload, transfer allocation, file, and account configuration. Treat 24/7 operation as a goal to validate with monitoring and recovery tests, not as a service-level promise. YouTube’s guidance supports testing and health monitoring, but does not supply an endurance duration that certifies an uninterrupted run.
