You can use systemd on a Vultr Linux server to start FFmpeg at boot and restart it after many process failures. That supervises FFmpeg; it does not guarantee an uninterrupted YouTube broadcast. You must still configure a valid input and encoder, keep the server and network available, and verify the feed in YouTube Live Control Room.

What this setup does—and what it cannot guarantee

FFmpeg sends audio and video to YouTube; systemd runs FFmpeg as a foreground service and can restart it if it exits unsuccessfully. This is useful for a stream sourced from a media file or another input that the server can access. It does not, by itself, repair invalid media, expired credentials, a failed network connection, or a feed YouTube rejects. An active service is not proof that viewers can watch.

Before configuring the service, decide what FFmpeg will ingest, which audio and video tracks to send, the output resolution and frame rate, codec and bitrate, and whether to copy the source streams or transcode them. Those choices determine the command and affect CPU, memory, storage, and upload requirements. There is no defensible universal Vultr instance size for this workflow without those details and a capacity test.

Vultr’s example is not an FFmpeg minimum

Vultr’s 2025 OBS-and-Ubuntu guide lists an example profile of 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB storage, and 3 TB bandwidth. That is an example for the guide’s OBS scenario—not a tested minimum or a performance guarantee for an FFmpeg service. See Vultr’s streaming server guide.

Prepare the host and confirm FFmpeg capabilities

Install FFmpeg using a trusted package source or build appropriate to the Linux distribution and release on your Vultr instance. Before relying on a command, check that the installed build supports the chosen video and audio encoders and the RTMPS protocol. Build options vary, so a command that works on one installation may fail on another.

Vultr’s article about static FFmpeg builds uses older operating-system examples. Treat it as background on build branches, not as current, distribution-neutral installation instructions: How to Install the Latest Static Build of FFmpeg.

Create a YouTube stream and protect its key

  1. Make sure the channel is eligible for live streaming and enable it if needed. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours.

  2. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select a stream and open its stream settings. Copy the server/ingest URL and the stream key shown for that stream. Follow the displayed settings rather than assuming a generic ingest address applies.

  3. Use the RTMPS URL when it is offered and supported by your FFmpeg build. YouTube recommends RTMPS; FFmpeg describes it as RTMP over a secure SSL connection.

  4. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in public scripts, screenshots, shell history, or logs. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube’s stream settings and update the service’s secret. YouTube explains stream keys and stream settings in Manage live stream settings; eligibility and encoder setup are covered in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Choose output settings for the source and connection

YouTube’s published encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals no longer than four seconds. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 options, up to 60 fps. Choose a codec your FFmpeg build and workflow support, and select a bitrate the source, server, and sustained upload connection can actually handle. YouTube advises testing both the connection and the stream; its current guidance is at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

H.264 output listed by YouTube Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 2 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
2160p (4K) at 30 fps 11 Mbps 42 Mbps

These are YouTube’s recommendations, not measurements of Vultr capacity or a promise of stable delivery. The full YouTube table varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Leave upload headroom for network variation, and do not select an output the host cannot encode in real time.

Stream-copy or transcode?

  • Stream-copy: Avoids re-encoding when the input’s codecs, parameters, and container handling suit the desired output. It uses less encoding CPU, but does not let you change the encoded video or audio characteristics to meet YouTube’s recommendations.

  • Transcode: Encodes to chosen output settings, but requires compatible encoders and enough CPU or supported hardware acceleration to keep up. Test under the intended resolution and frame rate; an overloaded host can fall behind or drop frames.

For a file input, an illustrative command shape is:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/input.mp4 [explicit input mapping and codec/bitrate/frame-rate/keyframe options] -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"

This is a template, not a turnkey or tested command. Replace the bracketed portion with valid options for the media and desired output; set the key and URL securely rather than embedding real credentials in the command. -re reads file media at its native rate, while -stream_loop -1 repeats the file. A capture device or other input needs different input options. Confirm your FFmpeg build accepts the selected options and output protocol.

Store credentials outside the unit file

Use a root-controlled environment file or another secret-storage method suited to your deployment. For example, a dedicated file under /etc can be owned by root and readable only by root; put the ingest URL and key there, not directly in a world-readable unit. The exact storage mechanism is an operational choice, but the key must remain private. Avoid printing environment values in diagnostic output.

Create a foreground systemd service

Create a unit such as /etc/systemd/system/youtube-ffmpeg.service. Replace the user, paths, environment-file location, and FFmpeg options for your host and source. Keep FFmpeg in the foreground: do not append & or use shell redirection in ExecStart. systemd expects an executable command and does not interpret shell operators unless you explicitly invoke a shell, which is unnecessary here.

[Unit]
Description=FFmpeg YouTube live stream
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target

[Service]
Type=simple
User=stream
WorkingDirectory=/srv/stream
EnvironmentFile=/etc/youtube-ffmpeg.env
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg [your explicit input and output options, using the environment variables]
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=5

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

This unit is a structural example: systemd does not expand shell syntax inside ExecStart as a shell would. Configure FFmpeg’s URL and key using a method compatible with your unit and FFmpeg invocation, and verify the resulting process receives them without exposing the secret. The User must have access to the input and required files. Add service-specific restrictions only if they permit the required media and network access. Consult the service and unit semantics for the systemd version installed on your host: systemd.service and systemd.unit.

  2. Enable the service at boot and start it now: sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-ffmpeg.service.

  3. Inspect process-level status: sudo systemctl status youtube-ffmpeg.service.

  4. Read recent logs: sudo journalctl -u youtube-ffmpeg.service -n 100 --no-pager. Check for input, encoder, permission, authentication, or connection errors. Ensure logs do not reveal the stream key.

Restart=on-failure is a suitable starting point for a long-running service. RestartSec=5 adds a short delay before a retry; choose a delay appropriate to your failure mode. Repeated rapid failures can hit systemd’s start-rate limits and leave the unit failed until the issue is corrected and it is started again. A deliberate systemctl stop is not automatically restarted under this policy. The systemd manual documents the restart behavior; confirm details against your installed systemd version.

Verify YouTube delivery separately

After starting FFmpeg, open the stream in Live Control Room. Wait for the preview, inspect stream health and any warnings, and confirm that both video and audio are correct. Then check the watch page from a viewer’s perspective. A running PID or “active” unit reports process state only; it cannot establish that YouTube accepted the feed or that playback works.

Test before relying on the setup. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” During a test, deliberately check what happens when FFmpeg exits or the connection drops: confirm systemd retries as expected, then verify that YouTube receives a healthy feed again. YouTube recommends pre-event tests and ongoing monitoring; restart behavior alone is not proof of recovery.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely area to check Next action
Service fails immediately Unit syntax, executable path, permissions, or unsupported FFmpeg options Run systemctl status and journalctl -u; validate paths and test the FFmpeg command interactively without exposing the key.
FFmpeg runs but YouTube shows no incoming stream Wrong stream’s ingest URL or key, unsupported RTMPS build, or connection issue Compare the URL and key with that stream’s Live Control Room settings; check protocol support and FFmpeg logs.
YouTube receives video but reports poor health Insufficient or unstable upload capacity, bitrate mismatch, or host unable to encode in real time Check YouTube’s health warnings, the selected codec-specific recommendations, CPU load, and sustained network capacity; reduce output demands if needed.
Picture appears but audio is absent or wrong Input track selection, stream mapping, or audio encoder configuration Inspect the source’s audio streams and configure explicit mapping and a compatible audio output; verify both preview and watch playback.
Service keeps restarting or becomes failed Persistent FFmpeg error or systemd start-rate limiting Fix the underlying error first, inspect journal logs, then start the unit again; adjust retry delay only after understanding the failure.
Service is active after reboot, but the broadcast is not viewable Process-level supervision mistaken for end-to-end stream verification Check the YouTube preview, health status, and watch page; validate media and credentials as well as service state.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is simply to keep uploaded videos looping on YouTube, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining FFmpeg and a Vultr server: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos to YouTube, not live camera capture.
