How can I stream 720p from 1080p videos?

YouTube’s guidance also identifies H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 as video codec options, recommends CBR bitrate encoding, and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds. Use the recommendations for your selected codec and frame rate, and make sure your available upload connection can sustain the outgoing bitrate reliably.
Will YouTube downscale my live stream?
YouTube automatically transcodes an incoming live stream into multiple output formats for viewers. That is separate from downscaling your 1080p source footage before it reaches YouTube: if you want to ingest at 720p, set the encoder’s outgoing resolution to 720p. YouTube Help explains that it transcodes live streams so viewers on different devices and networks can watch.

Viewer playback choices depend on YouTube’s transcoding; they are not the same thing as your encoder’s input resolution. Sending a 720p feed also means fewer pixels than sending 1080p. The perceived result depends on the content and encoding as well as the viewing size.
Is 720p a good choice for a continuous stream?
720p is a supported live-ingest option when a lower outgoing resolution helps fit the available upload bandwidth or stream more reliably. Choose the resolution, codec, and frame rate based on the connection and the detail viewers need; do not treat advice in YouTube’s general settings page to use the highest supported resolution as a universal rule for every type of stream.

A 720p encoder configuration answers the resolution question, but it does not establish that one uninterrupted stream will operate indefinitely. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish archive handling for longer streams, or how a 24/7 stream behaves or restarts. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance for the archive qualification, and avoid assuming the under-12-hour rule covers a continuous 24/7 broadcast.
How to test the 720p setup
- Set the encoder or streaming workflow’s outgoing resolution to 1280×720 and confirm that 1080p footage is scaled to fit.
- Select a supported codec and frame rate, then apply the corresponding recommended bitrate and keyframe settings.
- Check that the upload connection can sustain the chosen bitrate. YouTube recommends checking upload bitrate and monitoring stream health.
- Run a test stream, inspect the preview, and monitor stream health before relying on the configuration. YouTube’s live streaming guidance recommends testing and monitoring.
