A frozen YouTube picture when OBS loses focus does not automatically mean the broadcast ended. First check whether OBS is still streaming, whether its preview or a particular source froze, and what YouTube Live Control Room reports. Those observations separate a source/window problem from a network disconnect or a YouTube broadcast-state issue; each needs a different fix.
First identify what “stops” means
When the problem happens, note the time and compare OBS, the source, and YouTube before changing settings. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health during an event (YouTube Help: encoder settings and stream health).
- In OBS: Does it still show that it is streaming? Do bitrate or dropped-frame indicators change? Is the OBS preview frozen, or does only the YouTube viewer stop updating?
- In YouTube Live Control Room: Is the broadcast live? Does stream health show a problem, or has incoming data stopped?
- In the scene: Is the affected item an OBS browser source, a separately captured application window, a media source, or a static scene?
- On the computer: Does the freeze begin when OBS loses focus, when the captured app is backgrounded or minimized, or when Windows locks or sleeps?
A frozen image alone is not proof that YouTube ended the stream. The OBS streaming state, its dropped-frame information, and YouTube’s incoming-data and broadcast status are separate evidence.
If OBS is still connected but the picture freezes
OBS browser source
If the source is a browser source inside OBS and OBS itself continues streaming, investigate source rendering before changing network settings. A reporter in an OBS GitHub issue described browser-source stutter after OBS lost focus and proposed Windows Efficiency Mode or process priority as possible factors. The report’s system details specify Windows 11 and OBS 32.0.4; it is an individual report, not a confirmed OBS bug or a generally verified fix (OBS Studio issue report).

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Record your own Windows and OBS versions. In a private or unlisted test, reproduce the focus change and observe whether the same source stutters while OBS remains connected. Change one variable at a time and compare the result. Do not assume that changing process priority or keeping OBS focused will fix every browser-source problem.
A separate captured application window
If OBS captures a different browser or application window, test that window separately. Check whether its content continues updating while it is visible, then whether backgrounding or minimizing it consistently coincides with the capture freezing. A user discussion describes this symptom as “OBS Capturing failing when i focus on other windows,” but that discussion is anecdotal, not a technical diagnosis (Reddit discussion).

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Do not treat suggestions in user discussions—such as disabling hardware acceleration or changing priority—as universal remedies. First establish that the captured application stops updating or that the capture changes when its window loses focus.
Minimizing OBS to the system tray
OBS has system-tray options including “Minimize to system tray when started” and “Always minimize to system tray instead of task bar” in its English locale (OBS Studio user interface reference). These control where the application window goes when minimized. The settings documentation does not claim they prevent browser-source stutter, network drops, or interruptions caused by sleep. Treat tray minimization as window management, not as a proven stream fix.

If OBS reports dropped frames or disconnects
When OBS shows dropped frames or loses its connection, investigate the encoder-to-YouTube network path. OBS says dropped frames can occur when the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Its troubleshooting guide recommends checking connection stability, bitrate, network software, VPN or security interference, and Wi-Fi reliability (OBS: dropped frames and network issues).
- Check stable upload capacity: Set the bitrate with headroom below the upload speed your connection can sustain, rather than relying on a peak speed test. The appropriate bitrate depends on stable capacity, YouTube’s current limits, codec, resolution, and frame rate; there is no universal value for every 24/7 stream.
- Check the connection path: Test wired Ethernet if practical, and inspect VPNs, security software, and bundled network utilities that may interfere with OBS traffic. Compare an available server or service endpoint when applicable.
- Use dynamic bitrate cautiously: OBS notes it can reduce quality to limit dropped frames but does not resolve the underlying connection problem.
- Use network optimization only when relevant: OBS documents Windows-only network optimization and TCP pacing options and reports that some users have benefited in dropped-frame or disconnection cases. They are not a default remedy for a source that freezes only when focus changes.
For encoder parameters, use YouTube’s current guidance rather than old forum screenshots. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265, and AV1 options, supports up to 60 fps, recommends a 2-second keyframe interval (not exceeding 4 seconds), and specifies constant bitrate (CBR) (YouTube Help: encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions). Match settings to the codec and resolution you actually use; changing them does not by itself diagnose a focus-triggered freeze.

If OBS and YouTube disagree about whether the broadcast ended
Sending encoder data and having a YouTube broadcast in the live state are related but distinct. Check Live Control Room’s broadcast state, the selected or scheduled broadcast, and the times when OBS stopped sending data and YouTube changed state.
The OBS YouTube setup guide explains that scheduled broadcasts and auto-start/auto-stop affect broadcast behavior. It notes that enabling auto-stop ends the broadcast after streaming stops and prevents reconnecting to continue that broadcast; with auto-stop unchecked, a broadcast can still eventually end after no stream data for multiple hours. The guide is community-maintained, so menu labels and workflow may differ with current OBS or YouTube versions (OBS Studio quickstart guide: YouTube setup).

These controls help explain what happened after data stopped; they do not establish why focus caused the interruption.
Reproduce the problem safely and collect evidence
- Prepare a test: If practical, use a private or unlisted broadcast and a scene, source, movement, and audio similar to the real stream. YouTube advises testing before going live with movement and audio like the event, then monitoring stream health and messages during it (YouTube Help).
- Record a baseline: Note OBS and Windows versions, source type, whether OBS is streaming, the OBS preview state, bitrate and dropped-frame indicators, and YouTube’s stream-health and broadcast messages.
- Reproduce one change: At a recorded time, move focus away from OBS or background the captured application—test those separately. Record which view freezes and whether incoming data continues.
- Save evidence: Keep the OBS log and timestamps alongside the YouTube status. Change one setting at a time, then repeat the same test to see whether the result actually changes.
Common symptoms and the next check
| What you observe | Branch to investigate | First evidence to check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS remains streaming and YouTube receives data, but one source freezes | Source, window capture, or rendering behavior | Source type; whether its application still updates; OBS and Windows versions; focus/minimize reproduction |
| OBS shows dropped frames or disconnects; YouTube reports degraded or no incoming data | Encoder-to-ingest network path | OBS status and log; bitrate; stable upload; network software, VPN, security tools, and Wi-Fi |
| OBS and YouTube disagree about whether the broadcast is live or ended | YouTube broadcast state and controls | Live Control Room state; selected or scheduled broadcast; auto-stop setting; timestamps |
