Yes. You send YouTube one live feed at the resolution, frame rate and bitrate chosen in your encoder; YouTube automatically transcodes it into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. That does not guarantee that every stream will offer the same viewer-selectable resolutions, such as 1080p, 720p and lower.
For a prerecorded gaming rerun, play the footage into an encoder and send the encoder’s output to YouTube Live. YouTube documents encoder-based gameplay streaming, but does not describe a separate rerun mode.
What resolution does the creator control?
The creator controls the incoming live feed’s resolution, frame rate and bitrate through the encoder. These are the settings for the stream YouTube receives—not a promise of the exact quality options that will appear in the viewer’s player.
YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams into “many different output formats” so viewers across devices and networks can watch. It does not guarantee an identical playback ladder for every broadcast. If a particular quality option matters, check the actual player while the stream is running.

Choosing a higher output resolution does not by itself improve lower-resolution source footage. Match your output to the footage and choose settings your upload connection can sustain reliably.
How to send a prerecorded gaming video as a live stream
This is an encoder workflow: the computer plays the recording, the encoder sends that video as a live feed, and YouTube processes the incoming stream. YouTube lists gameplay and screen sharing among uses for encoder-based broadcasting.

- Prepare the recording. Use the gaming video you intend to rerun and decide whether you need a continuous live broadcast or simply want to upload it as an ordinary video.
- Set up a YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and select an encoder workflow. Copy the stream key into your encoder’s YouTube destination settings; treat the key as a password and do not share it.
- Load the video into the playback and encoder setup. Route the recording’s playback into the encoder as its video source, with any audio you want in the broadcast. A capture card is only relevant to some console-to-computer capture setups; it is not needed just to send a video file already available on the computer.
- Choose output settings. Set resolution and frame rate to suit the source footage and the upload connection. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval for encoder settings. Follow YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the bitrate appropriate to your selected resolution and frame rate.
- Test and monitor. Test under conditions similar to the real broadcast before going public, then watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators. Reduce the output demands if the connection cannot reliably sustain them.
- Start the encoder and verify playback. Confirm that YouTube receives the feed, that audio and video are present, and that the viewer-side quality options you need are actually available.
Choose settings for the source and connection
- Source resolution: Start with the recording’s native resolution. Sending a higher resolution than the source does not create extra source detail.
- Frame rate: Use a rate compatible with the recording and the connection; avoid demanding more bandwidth than the upload can maintain.
- Bitrate: Use YouTube’s current recommended bitrate for the chosen resolution and frame rate, then validate it in a real-condition test. A bitrate that is too ambitious for the connection can make the stream unstable.
- Keyframes and rate control: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and CBR encoding.
- Latency: YouTube’s settings guidance says 2160p streams do not have the “improve for low latency” option and use normal latency.
Settings and available options can change; consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions guidance when configuring a specific encoder.
Reruns, replays and long broadcasts
A live rerun and an ordinary video upload are different publishing choices: the encoder workflow presents prerecorded footage as a live feed, while an upload is watched on demand. After a broadcast, YouTube says replays appear as videos on the channel.

Plan separately for keeping a copy. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and also says 1440p and 2160p streams are automatically archived. It recommends keeping a local backup; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Verify the retained replay in Studio rather than assuming a long-running rerun will be archived in full. Copyright and channel-policy checks
Only stream footage and audio you have the rights to use. A game recording can contain music, cutscenes or other material with separate rights, so review those elements before making a long rerun public. Check YouTube’s applicable copyright rules and the terms for any third-party content in the recording.

Also consider whether the channel offers viewers meaningful original value. Repeating prerecorded footage as a live broadcast does not, by itself, establish that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization policies. Review current YouTube channel monetization policies if monetization is a goal.

- The stream buffers or loses health: The upload connection may not sustain the encoder’s output. Test in comparable conditions and lower the output demands until the feed is stable.
- The expected quality choices do not appear: YouTube confirms multiple output formats, not a fixed list for every broadcast. Check the player during the live stream and allow for viewer device and network differences.
- The picture looks no sharper at a higher output setting: Check the source recording’s native resolution; a larger encoder output cannot restore detail absent from the footage.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: Check the stream duration and resolution against YouTube’s archive guidance, then inspect Studio. Keep a local recording for important reruns, especially broadcasts that may exceed 12 hours.
- A console recording will not reach the encoder: Confirm that the playback or capture path is actually selected as the encoder’s source. A capture card may be needed for some console-to-computer setups, but not for a file already on the computer.
