How to Stream a 24/7 YouTube Playlist with OBS on Linux Mint

Loop a local video playlist with OBS on Linux Mint, connect it to YouTube Live, and understand the settings and monitoring a 24/7 stream needs.

You can loop a playlist of local video files through OBS on Linux Mint and send it to YouTube Live. Install VLC so OBS can offer its VLC Video Source, add and order the files, enable Loop Playlist, then configure YouTube’s stream URL and key in OBS. The setup can repeat media, but a 24-hour broadcast still depends on the Mint computer, power, internet connection and OBS process staying up; plan for monitoring and failure recovery.

Before you start: understand the two kinds of playlist

This guide means a playlist of video files played by OBS. It does not mean a YouTube watch playlist. OBS sends the output of its scene as a live broadcast; it does not turn a YouTube playlist URL into a sequence of live video.

  • A computer running Linux Mint with OBS installed.
  • VLC installed on the system, required for OBS’s VLC Video Source.
  • Local video files you have the right to stream, with enough storage and a stable power and internet connection.
  • A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming.

OBS’s VLC source supports playlists on Linux and includes a Loop Playlist setting. OBS describes it as allowing a playlist of items “similar to an Image Slideshow.” OBS Project: Media Sources.

Install OBS and VLC on Linux Mint

Install OBS using instructions for your Mint release

Use OBS Project’s current Linux installation guidance: OBS Project: Linux installation. OBS recommends Flathub for non-Ubuntu distributions. Linux Mint editions are Ubuntu-derived, but their base version and package setup vary by release, so do not assume a single Ubuntu PPA command is correct for every Mint system. Follow the upstream instructions that match your installation.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Install VLC before configuring the playlist source

Install VLC through the package method supported by your Mint release, then open OBS. If VLC Video Source is missing from the source list, confirm VLC is installed and restart OBS. Package names and installation details can vary with the Mint release and installation method.

Create and loop the playlist in OBS

  1. Create a scene: In OBS, use the Scenes panel to add a scene for the broadcast. Give it a clear name so you can identify it later.
  2. Add the VLC source: In Sources, select + and choose VLC Video Source. Name it and confirm.
  3. Choose the files and their order: In the source properties, add the local video files to the playlist and arrange them in the sequence you want viewers to see. The playlist is made of files available to the Mint computer, not a YouTube playlist.
  4. Enable repetition: Ensure Loop Playlist is enabled. OBS documents looping as enabled by default for this source, but check the setting rather than relying on the default.
  5. Fit the video to the scene: Check the canvas and the media’s aspect ratio. Resize or fit the source so it fills the intended frame without accidental cropping or empty bars. Add overlays as separate sources and keep the playlist source visible in the scene.
  6. Check audio: Watch OBS’s audio meters while a representative file plays. Verify that the intended audio is audible, not muted, and not clipping; check transitions between files as well as the start of playback.

File paths matter for a long run: keep the media where it is, and avoid removable storage or directories that may become unavailable while OBS is running. Test the complete sequence or enough representative transitions to catch missing files, incompatible media, silent tracks or abrupt changes before going live.

Make a local test before YouTube

Record a short test in OBS or run a short unlisted YouTube test before committing to a day-long broadcast. Check the picture, framing, audio, playlist order, looping behavior and transitions. YouTube advises testing with representative content, checking the preview and monitoring stream health; OBS’s quick-start guidance also recommends a short test. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Enable YouTube Live and connect OBS

  1. Check channel eligibility: YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until the scheduled broadcast day. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
  2. Create or select the event: Open YouTube Live Control Room, create a live stream or select the event you intend to use, and locate its stream settings.
  3. Copy the server URL and stream key: Use the RTMPS server URL and key supplied for that stream. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube or the applicable service configuration, and enter the server and key. Labels can differ slightly by OBS version and configuration.
  4. Protect the key: Treat the stream key like a password. Do not show it in screenshots, recordings, public configuration examples or chat. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s live-stream settings before the next broadcast.
  5. Preview before starting: Start streaming from OBS only when the intended YouTube event is selected. Confirm the preview and stream health in Live Control Room before treating the broadcast as live to viewers.

Choose resolution, frame rate and bitrate

There is no single bitrate that suits every Mint computer or connection. Match OBS output settings to the video, the encoder the machine can sustain, and the upload capacity available throughout the broadcast. YouTube recommends RTMPS, CBR (constant bitrate) and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Consult YouTube’s current settings table for the codec and resolution you choose: YouTube Help: Encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.

H.264 output YouTube-listed minimum bitrate YouTube-listed recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps

These are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations, not a measurement of your connection or a promise that a particular PC can encode reliably. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload headroom. For example, a stream configured at 8 Mbps needs more than 8 Mbps of steady available upload capacity; other household traffic and connection fluctuations also consume capacity. YouTube’s encoder settings and YouTube Help: Live streaming tips.

Set the resolution and frame rate in OBS’s video/output settings, then set the encoder bitrate and keyframe interval in the streaming encoder settings. Choose a level you can sustain, not merely the highest resolution the files support. The current YouTube table includes recommendations for additional codecs and frame rates; consult it rather than extrapolating the two H.264 examples above.

Keep a 24/7 local broadcast running responsibly

Looping solves media repetition; it does not make OBS or the computer self-recovering. In this setup the local PC must remain powered on, OBS must continue running, and the network must keep carrying the stream. YouTube warns that network disruption can break a broadcast. The official guidance cited here does not establish that OBS or YouTube will restart a failed local OBS process automatically.

  • Use a reliable power source and connection, and avoid planned system restarts or updates during the run.
  • Arrange an operator or a monitoring/alerting method to notice a failed process, lost network, stopped playlist or stream-health warning.
  • Decide who can restore the broadcast and reconnect it to the correct event if the computer, application or connection fails.
  • Observe YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators after starting, and keep checking them during the broadcast.
  • Plan the replay separately. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its cited guidance does not establish what archive result to expect for one continuous 24-hour stream. Do not promise viewers a single complete replay of a day-long broadcast. YouTube Help: Archive live streams.

Copyright and monetization checks for a looping channel

Only stream video and audio you are authorized to use on YouTube Live. A track or clip that is available elsewhere, licensed for personal playback, or included in a game does not automatically carry rights for a continuous public live stream. Check the relevant license and YouTube’s applicable copyright requirements before scheduling the content. A stream’s technical availability does not establish that it complies with copyright or monetization rules.

Review YouTube’s live-streaming policies and any rights-holder terms that apply to the material. Keep records of permissions where relevant, and remove or replace material if you cannot establish streaming rights. YouTube may restrict or interrupt content under its policies; the OBS loop setting does not bypass them.

Troubleshooting OBS-to-YouTube loops

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
VLC Video Source is not available VLC is not installed or OBS has not loaded the VLC source integration. Install VLC using the method suitable for your Mint release, restart OBS, and check Sources again.
Playlist will not repeat Loop Playlist is disabled, or the source does not have the expected file list. Open the VLC source properties, verify the playlist entries and order, and enable Loop Playlist.
A file is black, missing or silent The file path is unavailable, media cannot be read as expected, or its audio track is absent or muted. Confirm the file still exists at the listed path, play it locally, check OBS audio meters and source visibility, and test the transition before relaunching.
YouTube does not show the stream The wrong event, server URL or key may be selected, or the channel may not yet be eligible. Check Live Control Room’s selected event and OBS’s stream settings. Confirm verification and restrictions; first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
Stream health degrades or viewers see buffering Upload capacity is insufficient or fluctuating, or the configured bitrate is too demanding. Check YouTube stream health, reduce bitrate or output demands if necessary, and preserve the recommended 20% upload headroom.
Broadcast stops after a local interruption Power, network or OBS process failure broke the local contribution. Restore power/network or relaunch OBS, then reconnect to the correct YouTube event and verify preview and health. Arrange monitoring in advance; do not assume automatic restart.
