To rotate a playlist on YouTube Live from an India-based VPS, run FFmpeg on the server to read a prepared list of video files and send one continuous audio/video feed to YouTube over RTMPS. YouTube receives the live feed; FFmpeg decides which file plays next. The steps below cover the YouTube setup, playlist file, a practical FFmpeg command, server sizing, supervision, and common failures.
What runs the playlist—and what YouTube does
YouTube Live has two separate resources: a liveBroadcast, the event viewers watch, and a liveStream, the incoming encoder feed. FFmpeg or a process around it selects and plays the files; the broadcast itself does not rotate a playlist. A channel can reuse a stream resource for separate events at different times, while each channel needs its own stream resource. See YouTube Live Streaming API resources.
This guide uses a local playlist file and FFmpeg’s concat demuxer to present successive files as a continuous output. It assumes Linux, a working FFmpeg installation, media files stored on the VPS, and a YouTube channel that can start a live stream. Commands are examples, not a tested deployment; check the options against your installed FFmpeg build and the codecs in your files.
Prepare YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live event, or select the event you intend to use. Obtain its ingestion address and stream key from the event’s encoder settings. Exact labels can vary as Studio changes.
- Use the event’s supplied RTMPS ingestion address and key. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary streams; it is RTMP protected by TLS, and YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies a valid ingestion endpoint on port 443. Do not copy a sample key from a guide or paste your real key into a public script, repository, screenshot, or support post. See YouTube encoder settings and stream health guidance and YouTube RTMPS ingestion requirements.
- Keep the broadcast and incoming stream association consistent in Studio. Confirm that the event is ready to receive the encoder feed before starting FFmpeg; confirm separately that the event is actually live when you want viewers to see it.
For a quick manual run, set the endpoint and key in shell variables rather than placing them directly in a command history. Restrict access to the account and files that contain them. RTMPS implementations may require TLS server-name indication (SNI); if your FFmpeg build or TLS library cannot meet YouTube’s documented connection requirements, use a compatible build rather than silently switching to an insecure or unsupported route.

Build and validate the playlist
Put media on the server
Upload the files to a stable directory, for example /srv/youtube-media. Check that the files exist, are readable by the account that will run FFmpeg, and have enough disk space for the complete rotation. Keep filenames simple; if they include apostrophes or other special characters, escape them according to concat-demuxer syntax.
Create the concat list
Create /srv/youtube-media/playlist.txt with one entry per file, in playback order:
ffconcat version 1.0
file '/srv/youtube-media/video-01.mp4'
file '/srv/youtube-media/video-02.mp4'
file '/srv/youtube-media/video-03.mp4'
The ffconcat version 1.0 header must be the first line for the explicit concat format. The concat demuxer joins files as a sequence; it works best when their stream layout, codecs, time bases, and other relevant properties match. A mismatch can cause timestamp errors, missing audio, freezes, or a failed transition. Inspect the files with ffprobe and test the entire list before relying on it live.
For example, inspect a file with:
ffprobe -hide_banner -i /srv/youtube-media/video-01.mp4
If sources differ substantially, normalize them into compatible files before the live run, or use an FFmpeg filter/encoding workflow designed to handle the differences. Re-encoding on the VPS costs CPU; stream-copying does not make incompatible inputs compatible.

Choose YouTube-compatible output settings
Use YouTube’s published guidance as a target, not as a guarantee that a particular VPS route can sustain the feed. The bitrate recommendations below are from YouTube Help, verified in 2026; the page does not state a publication year for these figures. They are encoder settings, not guaranteed minimum VPS network speeds.
| Output | Codec | YouTube minimum | YouTube recommended |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p, 30 fps | H.264 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p, 30 fps | H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p, 30 fps | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Start with a resolution and frame rate your media, CPU, and sustained outbound connection can support. YouTube says it detects encoder settings and transcodes the live stream into viewer output formats in the standard Live Control Room workflow, so you do not need to generate viewer-specific renditions yourself. See YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance.
Run FFmpeg against the playlist
For compatible H.264/AAC files that already have the desired output properties, a stream-copy approach avoids real-time video encoding. Replace the endpoint and key below with the values from the YouTube event, and keep the key private.
export YT_RTMPS_URL='rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_ENDPOINT/YOUR_APPLICATION'
export YT_STREAM_KEY='YOUR_STREAM_KEY'
ffmpeg -hide_banner -re
-f concat -safe 0 -i /srv/youtube-media/playlist.txt
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0
-c:v copy -c:a copy
-f flv "${YT_RTMPS_URL}/${YT_STREAM_KEY}"
-re reads the media at its native rate instead of sending the entire playlist as fast as possible. -f concat selects the concat demuxer; -safe 0 permits the absolute paths in this local list. The stream maps select the first video and first audio stream. The FLV muxer is used for RTMP-family output. This sample assumes each file has compatible H.264 video and AAC audio; it is not a universal command for arbitrary media.

Stream copy preserves the encoded streams rather than forcing a target bitrate, frame rate, or keyframe interval. Check that the source files already meet the output requirements and that transitions work. If they do not, transcode to a consistent format and set the output properties explicitly; for example, an H.264/AAC output might use -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M -pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 for 30 fps video with a two-second GOP. Adjust bitrate, GOP, resolution, and frame rate together for the actual target. This encoding example consumes CPU and should be tested on the chosen VPS before going live.
To repeat the sequence continuously, FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can be told to reopen the list when it reaches the end:
ffmpeg -hide_banner -re
-f concat -safe 0 -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/youtube-media/playlist.txt
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v copy -c:a copy
-f flv "${YT_RTMPS_URL}/${YT_STREAM_KEY}"
Verify that your installed FFmpeg accepts this option placement and that the playlist loops cleanly with your media. If you need to add, remove, or reorder files while streaming, do not assume that edits to an open playlist will take effect immediately; test the exact update method or restart the process deliberately.
Size an India VPS for a continuous stream
Choose a server based on sustained outbound performance and workload, not its advertised peak port speed alone. A 24/7 stream continuously sends the selected video and audio bitrate, plus protocol overhead. A feed near 8 Mbps therefore needs a connection able to sustain that rate around the clock with headroom for variation and other server traffic.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Transfer allowance: ask the VPS provider how outbound transfer is counted, whether the cap recurs monthly, and what happens at the limit. The target bitrate alone is not a complete data budget.
- Network route: test sustained egress from the actual VPS region to YouTube’s ingest, at the selected bitrate. A headline interface speed does not establish a stable route.
- CPU: stream copy is comparatively light, while real-time scaling, frame-rate conversion, and video encoding can be CPU-intensive. Test the exact encoding settings on the selected instance.
- Storage: allow for the whole media set, playlist changes, logs, and any normalized copies. Monitor free disk space.
- Location: an India region may reduce distance for an operator or some audiences, but it does not by itself prove a better route to YouTube ingest or determine viewer delivery quality.
No specific India VPS plan, current price, transfer cap, or provider suitability is established here, so compare live provider terms before buying. YouTube’s bitrate chart describes encoder output; it is not a VPS price list or a promise of network capacity.
Keep the process observable and recoverable
A manual shell session is useful for the first test, but a long-running feed needs supervision. Run FFmpeg under a service manager such as systemd or another process supervisor; configure a restart policy, retain logs, and monitor both the process and YouTube’s stream health. Restarting FFmpeg can restore an encoder process, but it cannot fix a dead route, a revoked key, an unsupported file, or an event that is no longer accepting the feed.
- Start with a private or scheduled test event and watch the Studio preview and stream-health messages.
- Check server logs for connection failures, timestamp warnings, missing streams, or repeated restarts.
- Monitor CPU, network egress, disk space, and the VPS transfer allowance during an extended test.
- Test the viewer-facing result on another device or browser, including a file transition and the playlist loop boundary.
- Before changing files, keys, or encoding options on a live channel, make a planned change and verify the new output from Studio.
YouTube’s guidance is to test before starting, using audio and movement similar to the real stream, and to monitor stream health and messages during the event. A process that remains running is not proof that viewers are receiving a healthy stream.

Technical ability to loop a playlist does not guarantee monetization eligibility. YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams and assess a channel and its content. On July 15, 2025, YouTube renamed “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content” to clarify that repetitive or mass-produced content may be ineligible under its originality/authenticity rules. Reused-content review is separate from copyright: permission alone does not prove that material is sufficiently original for monetization. This does not mean every repeated playlist automatically violates policy. See YouTube channel monetization policies.
Troubleshoot common failures
- FFmpeg connects but YouTube does not show incoming video: confirm the correct event, ingestion address, and key; check that the event is ready to receive the feed; inspect the FFmpeg log and YouTube stream-health status.
- Connection times out or drops repeatedly: test outbound connectivity from the VPS to the supplied RTMPS endpoint and port 443, verify TLS/SNI compatibility, and measure sustained egress rather than relying on a peak-speed claim.
- FFmpeg reports concat or timestamp errors: confirm the header and paths in the concat list, inspect every file’s stream layout, and normalize mismatched inputs. Test the transition where the error occurs.
- Audio disappears or playback freezes between files: check that each file has the expected audio and video streams and compatible codecs, sample rates, frame rates, and timing. Map the actual streams or transcode the set to consistent output.
- CPU stays saturated or output stutters: reduce resolution or frame rate, lower encoding complexity, or use stream copy only if the source streams are compatible and already meet the desired output settings.
- The stream ends when the list finishes: confirm that the loop option is supported by the installed FFmpeg and is placed correctly; test the end-to-start transition before relying on it.
- The process runs but the channel is not live: distinguish an active encoder feed from a live broadcast. Check event state in Studio and start or schedule the broadcast as intended.
- The playlist changes do not appear: an already-open input may not reread your edited list. Use a tested update workflow or restart FFmpeg and verify the new sequence.
- The stream looks technically healthy but monetization is uncertain: review channel-level originality, reused-content, and rights policies; a stable FFmpeg output does not resolve those separate questions.
