To repeat prerecorded videos as a live broadcast, an encoder or streaming service must send them to YouTube Live and handle the looping. You can keep that setup running continuously, but neither YouTube’s archive guidance nor its encoder instructions promise that one live connection will last forever.
What “indefinitely” means for a YouTube Live stream
A continuous setup can send the same prerecorded playlist to YouTube Live again and again. The source that plays and loops the videos—such as an encoder on a computer or a cloud streaming service—must provide that behavior. YouTube’s standard playlist Loop control only repeats playback for viewers; it does not turn a playlist into a live broadcast. YouTube’s playlist looping instructions cover ordinary playback.
“Indefinitely” describes the intended ongoing operation, not a guarantee of an unbroken broadcast. The encoder or service must keep delivering a valid feed, and interruptions may require recovery. YouTube’s documentation explains how to start and stop encoder streams, but does not promise that a particular stream can stay connected forever. How to send a prerecorded playlist as a live broadcast
- Check the content and channel. Make sure the channel is eligible to stream and that you have the rights needed to broadcast every video and its audio. YouTube’s live-stream terms place responsibility for necessary rights, including applicable music rights, on the provider. Review YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions.
- Choose what will play and loop the playlist. Use an encoder or streaming service that can play prerecorded files and repeat or schedule them. The loop must come from that source, not YouTube’s viewer-facing playlist control.
- Set up the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and choose an encoder workflow. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the broadcast into the encoder or service. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or share it with people who should not control the stream.
- Start sending the feed. Start playback and streaming in the encoder or service. YouTube creates the live watch page when it receives the feed; confirm that the picture and sound are correct before relying on the broadcast.
- Keep a separate recording if the archive matters. Use a local recording or another archive workflow when you need a dependable copy of the whole broadcast. YouTube recommends a local archive as a backup.
- End the broadcast deliberately. Stop sending content from the encoder or service when you want the live stream to end. YouTube’s encoder guide describes stopping the stream at the source.
Software and hardware encoders are both options. YouTube’s verified-encoder information also lists AJA PlayToStream functionality for scheduling prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live, and describes Gyre as a cloud service for 24/7 prerecorded-video streams. Those listings show that these approaches exist; they do not establish a best choice for every channel or promise uninterrupted operation. See YouTube’s encoder information.

HLS is another ingestion method: an encoder sends media segments and playlists that YouTube can assemble into a continuous stream. It has format and transport requirements, but it is not the only way to broadcast continuously. Google’s HLS ingestion documentation explains the technical method.
Will YouTube save the full replay?
Do not rely on YouTube to archive a continuous broadcast in full. YouTube says it can automatically archive live streams that are less than 12 hours; a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. The 12-hour guidance is an archive qualification, not a recommended maximum runtime or an assurance that every shorter stream will be preserved. Read YouTube’s archive guidance.

Viewers may be able to pause or rewind a live stream when DVR is enabled, but DVR controls are not a durable recording. After a broadcast ends, a channel may publish a replay or highlights; plan a separate recording if you need to preserve the full feed. YouTube explains DVR in its live stream settings guidance and describes replays in Learn about live streams.
Common problems and practical fixes
- The playlist repeats on YouTube, but there is no live broadcast. The viewer’s Loop control only repeats normal YouTube playback. Start an encoder or streaming service that sends the playlist to YouTube Live.
- The broadcast does not appear live. Check that the encoder is sending to the correct stream URL and that it has the matching stream key. Confirm that the source is playing and that the encoder is actively sending its feed.
- The stream stops when the computer or connection goes offline. A locally operated encoder depends on the computer and its internet connection remaining available. If you need operation without a home computer, consider a cloud service that runs the playlist and delivers the feed.
- The replay is missing or incomplete. A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Keep a separate recording when a complete archive is important.
- A video or music track creates a rights problem. Confirm that your permissions cover live rebroadcasting and applicable music rights. Permission to upload a video does not necessarily settle the rights for a live rebroadcast or its archive.
