In a playback app such as Kodi, it can mean video is arriving too slowly to play smoothly. On an ATEM Mini Pro or Extreme, it refers to an outbound buffer filling because the network cannot deliver the stream fast enough. First identify which device shows the warning and whether you are watching or sending a stream; the right fix depends on that distinction.
What “cache full” means in each situation
Watching a stream or video in Kodi
Kodi’s archived FAQ, last edited September 16, 2022, describes “Cache full messages and constant buffering” as a playback problem: video is not loading quickly enough to play smoothly. The FAQ says the cache is held in RAM and clears when playback stops. It identifies the connection to the remote server as a common limiting factor.
That means a fast home connection does not guarantee smooth playback. The server hosting the video, the route between it and you, or the particular source can still be slow.
Sending a stream from an ATEM Mini Pro or Extreme
On these Blackmagic Design switchers, the cache is an outbound safety buffer for video frames. If the network cannot carry the configured stream quickly enough, the buffer grows. Blackmagic’s June 2024 ATEM manual warns that at 100% the video stream will be compromised, and recommends testing the connection and lowering quality if the cache frequently approaches full.

The manual gives approximately 5–7 Mb/s for broadcasting 1080p60 on these ATEM models without losing frames. That is specific to the named hardware and mode—not a universal internet-speed target for every encoder or platform.
Diagnose the warning before changing settings
- Note the exact app or device. Record whether the warning appears in Kodi, an ATEM multiview display, or another product. Cache behavior and controls vary by product.
- Work out which direction the video is moving. If you are watching, investigate playback delivery from the source to your device. If you are broadcasting, investigate the encoder’s outbound delivery to the streaming platform.
- Check when it happens. Note whether one video or source is affected, whether the issue happens only at a particular quality, and whether the warning is occasional or recurring. Those clues help separate a source-specific problem from a sustained delivery-capacity problem.
- Use the product’s own status information. On an ATEM Mini Pro or Extreme, inspect the multiview streaming status, including broadcast data rate and cache percentage. For other devices, use their own diagnostics rather than assuming their cache works like Kodi’s or an ATEM’s.
Fix playback buffering in Kodi
If one video or source is affected
Test another video or source. If other playback is smooth but one item repeatedly buffers, the remote server or that source’s delivery path is a stronger lead than your local connection. A faster internet plan may not resolve a slow or overloaded remote server.

If many sources are affected
Check whether playback is affected across different sources and times. If it is, investigate your connection and the delivery route as well as the source; the archived Kodi FAQ identifies the remote-server connection as a common bottleneck, but does not establish that every buffering case has the same cause.
Be cautious with cache settings
Kodi’s archived FAQ points advanced users to advancedsettings.xml for adjustable cache settings. Because that FAQ was last edited in 2022, do not copy a setting or value without checking current Kodi documentation for your installed version. Increasing a cache is not a guaranteed fix for a source that cannot deliver video quickly enough.

Fix an ATEM Mini Pro or Extreme cache that keeps rising
- Check the status during a test broadcast. Watch the broadcast data rate and cache percentage in the multiview streaming status. A cache that repeatedly approaches 100% indicates the delivery path is not keeping up reliably with the configured stream.
- Test the connection during setup. Blackmagic recommends connection testing. Compare the configured quality with the connection’s actual delivery performance rather than relying on a general speed-test result alone.
- Lower the streaming quality if the cache repeatedly nears full. Blackmagic specifically recommends lowering quality in the live-stream settings in that situation. Retest after changing it and observe whether the cache remains lower.
- Check for network variation. If the encoder uses Wi-Fi, test a wired Ethernet connection if the setup supports it. Ethernet can reduce wireless variability, but cannot guarantee enough upstream capacity or fix a slow or congested route beyond your local network.
- Check the upstream path and platform configuration if the problem persists. If lower quality and a stable local connection do not resolve recurring cache growth, investigate the route to the service endpoint and the platform configuration. The ATEM warning alone does not identify which upstream segment is responsible.
A Cat6 cable may be a useful optional accessory when testing a supported wired connection, but it is not a universal cure. Replacing an encoder, adding RAM, or buying storage is not justified unless diagnostics identify local processing or storage as the actual bottleneck.
Why generic cache-clearing advice may not apply
Clearing an app cache or restarting can help some less severe application-level problems, according to BoxCast’s July 2026 explainer. That broad advice does not show that clearing a cache will fix an encoder’s outbound network buffer. If an ATEM’s cache rises while broadcasting, use its data-rate and cache status and address delivery quality and network conditions instead of treating it as an app-storage issue.

User forum reports describe varied attempts, including modem and protocol changes, but they are anecdotes rather than an established manufacturer fix. A protocol change should not be the default response to this warning.
