Yes. A YouTube livestream can be interrupted—and can receive a copyright strike if YouTube removes the active stream for copyright—even when the video was cleared in an earlier context. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, and says a licensed stream can still be interrupted if the rights owner has not added the channel to their Content ID allowlist.
What “previously cleared” does—and does not—mean
“Cleared” is not a precise YouTube policy term. It might mean a Content ID claim was released, someone gave permission, a licence was obtained, or an earlier platform decision went in the creator’s favour. Those outcomes are not interchangeable, and none should be assumed to authorize every later use.
A released Content ID claim is not, by itself, proof that a new livestream is covered. A licence or written permission must cover the actual use. Check whether it includes live streaming and repeat broadcasts, the specific channel or account, the relevant territories and dates, and every element in the video—including music or other third-party material. The rights needed depend on the permission or licence; YouTube’s guidance does not set universal terms for private agreements.
YouTube says creators using licensed third-party content should ask the rights owner to add their channel to the owner’s Content ID allowlist. Its live-stream guidance warns: “If your channel isn’t added to their allowlist, your live stream can be interrupted even if you’ve licensed the third-party content.” YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.

How a live match, a claim and a strike differ
| Event | What happens | What it means for the channel |
|---|---|---|
| Live-stream match or warning | YouTube scans all live streams for matches to third-party content. If it identifies material, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn the creator to stop. If the material remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. | A match can disrupt the live broadcast. It is not automatically a copyright strike. |
| Content ID claim on an archived stream | If the livestream is archived, YouTube says Content ID claims are made after the stream ends. | A Content ID claim typically does not itself result in a strike. It is distinct from removal of an active stream. |
| Copyright removal request | A rights holder submits a legal request to remove content. If YouTube considers the request valid, it removes the content and applies a strike. | A strike is more serious than a match warning or typical Content ID claim. |
| Active livestream removed for copyright | YouTube says removing an active livestream for copyright results in a strike. | The first such strike restricts livestream access for seven days; another copyright strike makes the livestream restriction last 14 days. |

Check these points before repeating the video live
- Identify what was cleared. Find the record of the earlier outcome: a released Content ID claim, written permission or licence, a counter-notification outcome, or something else. Do not treat one as proof of another.
- Confirm that the permission covers this use. Check live rebroadcast and repeat use, the channel or account, territory, dates, and all included music and third-party material. If any part is unclear, ask the rights owner rather than assuming the earlier clearance applies.
- Ask the rights owner to allowlist the channel. YouTube specifically recommends this for licensed third-party content. Confirm with the owner that the correct channel has been added before starting the stream.
- Keep the supporting records. Retain the written permission or licence and any confirmation of allowlisting so you can refer to the actual scope if a claim or interruption occurs.
- Check YouTube Studio if the stream is interrupted or a strike appears. YouTube directs creators to Studio to check strike information. Review the stated restriction and notice rather than assuming that a live warning, archive claim and strike are the same event.
If YouTube interrupts or removes the stream
If the live feed is interrupted, stop using the identified material and check the notice in YouTube Studio. A match warning is not the same as a strike; determine whether YouTube merely interrupted the stream, placed a claim on an archive, or removed content following a copyright request.

If a strike was applied, YouTube says it can be resolved by completing Copyright School and waiting 90 days, by getting the claimant to retract the request, or by submitting a valid counter notification. A counter notification is a legal process: use it only if you believe the removal was a mistake or that your use qualifies for a copyright exception. YouTube says it cannot decide whether you should dispute a claim and suggests seeking legal advice if you are unsure. Read YouTube’s strike guidance and its instructions for disputing a Content ID claim.
Simply owning a copy of a video or song is not a legitimate reason to dispute a claim. Before disputing or rebroadcasting, establish that you have the necessary rights. YouTube’s guidance is at Dispute a copyright claim.

What the policy evidence does not establish
YouTube’s Help guidance does not say that a prior cleared upload automatically authorizes a later livestream. Whether a particular rebroadcast is permitted depends on the rights and permissions for that use, while allowlisting addresses the risk of an automated live interruption. The guidance cannot determine the scope of a particular licence or resolve a legal dispute. The policy pages cited here were accessed on October 3, 2026; no publication date was visible on those pages.
YouTube reported receiving copyright removal requests for over 16 million videos in 2022. That figure counts videos named in requests; it is not a count of livestream strikes, valid requests, or the likelihood that a particular rebroadcast will be removed.
