If you already own a PC, estimate its incremental electricity cost from its measured wall-power draw and your local electricity rate, then compare it with a current quote for a cloud service that fits the same stream. Include the costs and trade-offs each option actually adds: cloud storage and network charges, or home power, maintenance, internet dependence and recovery from interruptions.
This comparison assumes a prerecorded ambient music loop. A live camera or interactive production has different equipment and cloud requirements. A 730-hour month is a useful common comparison period, not the exact length of every calendar month.
Calculate the home PC’s monthly electricity cost
Use the average wall draw of the whole setup that must remain on for the stream—not the PC power supply’s rated capacity. Where possible, measure the PC and any other streaming equipment together with a plug-in electricity usage monitor. Multiply the measured watts by the hours run and your electricity price per kilowatt-hour (kWh):
Monthly electricity cost = average wall watts ÷ 1,000 × operating hours × local electricity price per kWh

Use the same operating hours for the home and cloud estimates. For a 730-hour comparison month, a setup averaging 120 W would use 87.6 kWh. At 17.30¢/kWh, that comes to about $15.15. The 17.30¢ figure is a 2025 U.S. residential average attributed to the U.S. Energy Information Administration by a comparison guide; it is an illustrative benchmark, not a verified current rate for your location. Your meter reading and bill rate are better inputs.
For example, at 100 W over 730 hours, the energy use is 73 kWh; multiply 73 by your own per-kWh rate for the monthly electricity estimate. This calculation covers electricity only.

Separate added costs from costs you already pay
If the PC is already yours, its original purchase price is generally a sunk cost. Count the costs that change because you keep it running for the stream, and disclose what you leave out.
- Home setup: incremental electricity, any new hardware or replacement cost, additional cooling, a UPS if needed, maintenance, and the cost of internet only if the stream requires a plan upgrade. Also consider that home power or internet interruptions can stop the stream.
- Cloud setup: the specific service or plan fee, compute if you rent a VM, storage, outbound network charges, setup and administration, and any monitoring or restart arrangements needed.
Do not treat an existing PC’s full purchase price as a new monthly streaming expense. Conversely, do not omit a new PC, replacement, or supporting equipment if you would buy it for this stream.

Compare the type of service, not just “cloud” with “PC”
Cloud streaming can mean different architectures, with different bills and setup work. Price the actual workload, region, resolution and operating hours rather than assuming every cloud option includes the same things.

A managed playlist service, a self-managed VM and a cloud video API are not interchangeable. Check the current provider plan or quote for your chosen setup; a vendor’s feature and price descriptions are not independent evidence that cloud will cost less than an existing PC.

Make a like-for-like monthly comparison
- Set the workload: write down whether this is a prerecorded loop, the resolution and frame rate, the number of streams, and the hours per month. Use 730 hours if you want a standard comparison month.
- Measure the home setup: record its average wall watts while doing the actual streaming work. Include equipment that must remain on, then calculate electricity using your local tariff.
- Add home costs that change: include only new hardware, incremental cooling or UPS costs, necessary internet upgrades, maintenance, and other costs caused by the stream. Note existing costs you exclude.
- Get a specific cloud price: identify whether it is managed playout, a VM or an API; then check the relevant region, configuration, storage, outbound network charges and plan fee for the same hours and workload.
- Compare beyond the bill: weigh startup cost, setup and control, dependence on home power and internet, and how each option responds to a dropped connection or service interruption.
The result is a break-even comparison for your setup, not a universal verdict. No established measurement or like-for-like provider quote proves that one approach always costs less.

Cloud delivery does not change your rights obligations. YouTube’s official livestream terms say creators must have the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers and other royalty participants. The audio and visuals must be cleared for the livestream and any archive the channel retains.
