Not at the monitor’s native 7680×2160 resolution, according to testing reported in September 2023: RTX 40-series cards, including the RTX 4090, could not drive Samsung’s 57-inch Odyssey Neo G9 G95NC at 240Hz over the tested connections. That is a dated report, not proof that every later driver or firmware behaves the same way. Samsung specifies that this monitor’s native DUHD 240Hz mode requires a graphics card supporting DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR 13.5 or HDMI 2.1 FRL 6, and warns that compatibility varies by card.
Which Odyssey Neo G9 is this about?
The issue concerns Samsung’s 57-inch Odyssey Neo G9 G95NC, not every monitor sold under the Neo G9 name. Samsung lists this model with a 32:9 aspect ratio, native 7680×2160 “Dual UHD” resolution, a maximum 240Hz refresh rate, one DisplayPort 2.1 input, and three HDMI 2.1 inputs. Samsung’s product announcement includes the important qualification: “DUHD 240Hz is supported only with graphics cards that support Display Port 2.1 (UHBR 13.5) or HDMI 2.1 (FRL 6). Support and actual refresh rate may vary by graphics card.”
That qualification describes the monitor’s full-resolution 240Hz mode. It does not mean an RTX 4090 cannot use the display at all, or that it cannot reach 240Hz at a lower resolution.
Why the RTX 4090’s specifications don’t settle the question
NVIDIA’s RTX 4090 specifications list DisplayPort 1.4a connectors and HDMI output. NVIDIA also publishes maximum display-mode guidance of 4K at 240Hz or 8K at 60Hz with Display Stream Compression (DSC). Those headline modes are not a guarantee of every resolution-and-refresh combination: the G95NC’s 7680×2160 at 240Hz is a distinct, demanding mode, and Samsung specifically calls for DP 2.1 UHBR 13.5 or HDMI 2.1 FRL 6 support from the graphics card.

Tom’s Hardware reported that uncompressed 7680×2160 at 240Hz with 10-bit color would require substantially more bandwidth than a single connection supplies, making DSC necessary. The article discussed possible limitations involving DSC handling, the display pipeline, firmware, or software, but did not confirm a cause. The practical point is to assess the exact link mode and GPU support—not to infer compatibility from an “8K” label or connector name alone.
What the reported RTX 4090 test found—and what it didn’t
In a September 23, 2023 report, Anton Shilov at Tom’s Hardware, citing QuasarZone testing, said RTX 40-series and Intel Arc A700-series cards did not support the monitor’s native 7680×2160 at 240Hz over the tested connections. Radeon RX 7000-series cards did in that cited testing. The report did not establish why, and its result should not be treated as a universal test of every later GPU driver, monitor firmware, cable, or connection configuration.

The report’s headline describes a 120Hz limit, but that should be read in the context of the configurations it covered—not as a guarantee that every RTX 4090 setup will expose exactly 120Hz, or as proof that 240Hz is impossible at any resolution. The evidence establishes a reported failure to reach native DUHD 240Hz in the cited test, not a definitive diagnosis or current compatibility result.

What to check if your 4090 is not showing 240Hz
- Confirm the resolution and refresh rate you mean. In Windows, check the display’s active resolution and refresh rate in Settings > System > Display > Advanced display. A 240Hz option at 5120×1440 is not the same mode as 240Hz at the G95NC’s native 7680×2160.
- Check the connection and the graphics card’s supported link mode. Samsung conditions native DUHD 240Hz on DP 2.1 UHBR 13.5 or HDMI 2.1 FRL 6 support from the graphics card. The RTX 4090’s listed DisplayPort standard is 1.4a; verify the precise capabilities of the selected output, monitor input, and link rather than assuming the port’s connector shape proves support.
- Try a lower mode if you want to use the monitor with the 4090 now. Select a resolution or refresh rate that your particular setup exposes. The available choices depend on the GPU, connection, monitor, and settings; the historical native-mode finding does not specify every lower-resolution mode.
- Apply Samsung’s general refresh-rate troubleshooting carefully. For a different, lower mode—5120×1440 at 240Hz—Samsung recommends enabling Game Mode in the monitor menu, checking that the graphics card is up to date and supports the desired resolution, and using a certified compatible DisplayPort cable. Samsung’s refresh-rate support guidance addresses that lower mode; it does not claim these steps fix native 7680×2160 at 240Hz on an RTX 4090.
- Re-test after changes and record the exact setup. Note the GPU model, driver, monitor firmware, input, cable, selected resolution, refresh rate, and any DSC or display-mode settings available. A result is meaningful only when those details match the setup being evaluated.
