Yes—but a returning hero is not automatically the same person who died. Marvel’s stories distinguish between a survivor from a branch timeline, a multiverse variant, a person restored by the Blip, a technological or magical reconstruction, and a genuinely resurrected original. Avengers: Endgame establishes that changing the past creates a separate branch rather than rewriting the travelers’ lived history. Loki and What If…? make variants and alternate universes explicit. Those rules let Marvel show a familiar hero again while preserving the consequences of the original death.
What counts as a hero “returning”?
The word return hides several different continuity events. Before deciding whether a death has been undone, classify what is actually on screen. The distinction determines whether the original death still happened, whether the character remembers the same life, and whether the main MCU timeline has changed.

| Return type | What it means | Does the original death remain part of main-timeline history? |
|---|---|---|
| Original survivor | The supposedly dead character was never dead, or the apparent death was misdirection. | Not necessarily; the story must reveal that the death was misunderstood. |
| Restored victim | A person erased by Thanos’s Snap is brought back when the Blip reverses the Snap. | The erasure happened, but the person’s life resumes after restoration. |
| Branch-timeline counterpart | Time travel creates a divergent history in which another version survives. | Yes. The travelers’ original history is not deleted. |
| Multiverse variant | An alternate-universe person shares a name, role, powers or appearance with the dead hero but has a different biography. | Yes. The variant’s existence does not revive the main-timeline original. |
| Reconstruction or replacement | Technology, magic or another process produces a new body, copy or incarnation. | Usually yes; identity and memories have to be established by the story. |
| True resurrection | The same individual returns from death with continuity of identity, memories and consciousness. | The death may be reversed, but Marvel has not made this a universal rule for every character. |
A familiar face, voice or costume is therefore evidence of resemblance, not proof of identity. Marvel can bring back a recognizable hero without claiming that the exact person who died has been restored.
How Endgame makes time travel work
Avengers: Endgame (2019) uses a branch-reality model. The Avengers’ time-heist team travels into earlier periods, but changing an event does not overwrite the travelers’ own past. Instead, the changed event creates a divergent timeline. The characters retain memories of the history they lived through, while the branch develops its own future.

Changing an earlier event creates a branch
Under this model, removing an object or altering a decision in the past can produce a new continuity. The original timeline remains the source of the travelers’ memories and motivations. A version of a hero who survives in the branch is consequently not proof that the main-timeline death never occurred.
Why the Avengers return the Infinity Stones
The time-heist plan includes returning the Infinity Stones to the moments from which they were taken. That step is intended to reduce the number and severity of divergent branches. It does not erase every consequence of the mission, and it does not turn every death into a reversible event. The branch model explains why a story can revisit an earlier version of a character while preserving the continuity that viewers followed through later films.
What this means for a dead hero
If a writer sends a character to the past and lets that version escape, the result is a living counterpart in a branch unless the story supplies an additional mechanism. The main-timeline death remains part of the history experienced by the surviving Avengers and everyone else who remembers it.
What is a variant, and is it the same person?
Marvel’s official Loki material identifies Sylvie as a Loki variant. The series treats her as a legitimate person from a different path, not as a disguise worn by the Loki who died. Marvel’s description of What If…? similarly presents the series as a reimagining of famous MCU events through variants across the multiverse.

Shared identity does not mean shared biography
A variant can have the same name, species, powers or narrative role as another character while making different choices and forming different relationships. Divergence may begin with one decision, an altered childhood, a different universe or a changed historical event. The farther the timeline or universe has diverged, the less reasonable it is to treat the two people as interchangeable.
A practical identity test
When a supposedly dead hero appears, ask six questions rather than relying on casting:
- Timeline: Is the person from the main continuity, a branch created by time travel, or another universe?
- Memory: Do they remember the dead hero’s complete life, or only a parallel life?
- Body and identity: Is this the original body, a replacement body, a copy, or another person played by the same actor?
- Cause: Did the appearance result from the Blip, magic, technology, time travel or multiverse substitution?
- Consequence: Do the original death and its effects still shape events in the main timeline?
- Agency: Does the returned version make different choices or possess a different moral outlook?
If the answers point to another timeline or universe, the safest description is “a variant” or “an alternate counterpart,” not “the resurrected original.”

The Blip restored Snap victims; it did not resurrect every death
The Blip is a specific restoration event. Thanos’s Snap erased half of all life, and the reversal restored those victims. That process explains why people who vanished can return after the final battle with their memories and identities intact enough to resume their lives.

Endgame distinguishes those restorations from deaths that occur during the final fight. The film presents Tony Stark’s sacrifice as a death with lasting consequences in the main timeline. The existence of the Blip therefore does not establish a general rule that any hero who dies can simply be brought back by repeating the same action.
Erasure and death are different states
A Snap victim is absent because of a universe-wide erasure that the Avengers deliberately reverse. A hero who dies from an injury, sacrifice or battle is not automatically covered by that mechanism. Treating both events as “deaths” without noting the cause leads to incorrect predictions about who can return.
Why Tony Stark is the clearest limit
Tony’s final act supplies the emotional and causal cost of the climactic victory. A later appearance could be a recording, flashback, variant, simulation or other version, but the released story does not make his main-timeline sacrifice equivalent to a reversible Snap disappearance. A return would need to identify its mechanism and explain why the original consequences still matter.
Case studies: Loki, Vision and alternate realities
Why Loki can appear after Thanos kills him
The Loki killed by Thanos is the Loki of the main Infinity War continuity. A different Loki escapes during the time-heist era and becomes the focus of the series that Marvel describes as taking place after Avengers: Endgame. The two versions share an identity and actor, but they do not share one uninterrupted biography. The series’ premise is therefore consistent with the original death: the main-timeline Loki remains dead while a branch or variant continues elsewhere.

What What If…? demonstrates
What If…? treats altered outcomes as multiverse stories. Its premise is not that the main films’ events have been corrected; it is that another universe followed a different path. A hero who survives, changes allegiance or gains a different role in one episode is evidence of multiversal possibility, not automatic evidence that the main-timeline version has been revived.
What Vision’s continuation proves—and does not prove
Marvel announced VisionQuest on May 12, 2026, with an announced Disney+ debut date of October 14, 2026. The announcement confirms that Paul Bettany is returning as Vision for further storytelling. It does not, by itself, establish which body, memories or continuity the series uses, nor does it prove that every prior version of Vision has been restored. Those identity details must come from the series’ story.

Yes, if the story clearly labels the mechanism and keeps the original consequences visible. Several approaches preserve continuity:

A living counterpart can participate in a new story while the original timeline retains its loss. The narrative should identify the branch or universe and show how that version’s history differs.

Use a reconstruction with explicit limits
A copied mind, replacement body or rebuilt synthetic person can continue a character’s themes without claiming that death had no cost. The story should specify what memories survived, what was recreated and what was lost.
Use a flashback, recording or subjective appearance
A deceased hero can appear in earlier events, stored footage or another character’s perception. Such scenes add context without changing chronology.
Use a new incarnation
A successor can inherit a title, power set or mission. Similarity of role should not be presented as proof that the deceased individual returned.
The least compatible option with the established rules is an unexplained reversal that restores the exact original while ignoring the death’s consequences. Marvel could introduce a new mechanism in a future story, but released rules do not require readers to assume one exists.
How to analyze any rumored or revealed comeback
- Locate the appearance in chronology. Determine whether the scene occurs before the death, after it, or outside the main timeline.
- Identify the continuity. Look for explicit labels such as variant, branch, alternate universe or a named reality.
- Check memories and relationships. Ask whether the character remembers the same events and is recognized by people who knew the deceased version.
- Check the body and consciousness. A new body, artificial copy or possession may indicate reconstruction rather than resurrection.
- Identify the cause. The Blip, time travel, magic, technology and multiverse travel carry different continuity implications.
- Check consequences. If the original death still drives grief, decisions and later events, the appearance probably is not a simple undoing.
- Separate confirmation from speculation. An announced project confirms that Marvel plans to use a character; it does not confirm every rumored plot explanation.
What the official timeline reference can clarify
Marvel announced Marvel Studios The Marvel Cinematic Universe: An Official Timeline on October 23, 2023. Marvel says the book was created in collaboration with Marvel Studios and covers MCU chronology, the multiverse and the Blip. For readers tracking a return, its value is organizational: it provides a physical chronology reference for placing films, series and major continuity events. It cannot, however, answer an identity question that a future story has not yet established.
Quick Recap
The rule set in one view
- Changing the past creates a branch rather than deleting the travelers’ original history.
- A variant is a real alternate person, not automatically the dead original.
- The Blip restores people erased by the Snap; it is not a universal resurrection device.
- A continued character such as Vision requires an explanation of body, memories and continuity.
- What If…? uses alternate outcomes as multiverse stories, not repairs to the main timeline.
- Any specific unannounced comeback remains speculation until Marvel’s story identifies the version and mechanism.
