No: Dolphin does not directly emulate Nintendo 64 games or load ordinary N64 ROMs. It emulates GameCube and Wii software. There is a narrow exception: Dolphin may run a Wii Virtual Console release of an N64 game, because that release is Wii software with its own N64 emulation layer.
What Dolphin can and cannot run
Dolphin’s stated purpose is to run GameCube and Wii games on Windows, Linux, macOS, and recent Android devices. Its official project description does not list Nintendo 64 as an emulation target: Dolphin’s project page and requirements.

That distinction matters when choosing a game file. A standard N64 ROM is an image intended for an emulator that models the Nintendo 64. Dolphin is not designed to load that image as an N64 game, and a standard ROM is not interchangeable with a Wii release of the same title.
Why some N64 games can run through Dolphin
Nintendo released some N64 games as Wii Virtual Console titles. These are Wii software releases that include an N64 emulation layer. When Dolphin runs one, it is emulating the Wii environment; the Virtual Console title then handles the N64 game. That is indirect playback, not native N64 support in Dolphin. Nintendo’s historical Wii Channel Manual identifies Nintendo 64 as a Virtual Console platform.

This route requires the specific Wii Virtual Console release. Having an ordinary N64 ROM does not provide the Wii software Dolphin needs, and the Wii Virtual Console catalog should not be assumed to contain every N64 game.
How to check a Wii Virtual Console title
- Identify the exact Wii Virtual Console release you intend to use; a similarly named N64 ROM is a different format and release.
- Search for that title in Dolphin’s compatibility list. The list includes a Virtual Console category and per-title compatibility information.
- Read the entry as evidence about that title, not as a guarantee that it will work perfectly on every device or configuration. Compatibility is title-specific.
What to use for a standard N64 ROM
If your game is an ordinary N64 image, use an emulator intended for Nintendo 64 or compatible original hardware. This is a platform-fit recommendation, not a comparison of particular emulator projects. Dolphin’s FAQ discusses its GameCube and Wii scope, legal game acquisition, and supported dump formats: Dolphin FAQ. Follow applicable law and use game files you are authorized to use.
