Under the 2014 fifth-edition rules, a druid does not get Misty Step from the standard druid spell list. There is one specific subclass exception: a Circle of the Land druid who chooses the Coast option gains Misty Step as a 3rd-level circle spell. It is always prepared and does not reduce the number of other spells that druid can prepare.
This answer assumes the 2014 rules. The question has a different answer if you are using the 2024 rules, a later supplement, or a house rule that changes subclass spell lists.

What the 2014 rules say
A 2014 druid prepares spells from the druid spell list. The class rules do not include Misty Step as a normal druid-list choice. Therefore, a druid cannot simply select it during daily preparation in the way they select spells that appear on the standard list.

The class rule and the subclass rule are separate. Saying that Misty Step is not a standard druid spell does not mean that no druid can ever have it. A qualifying Circle of the Land feature grants it through the circle-spell system.

The class and subclass wording for the 2014 rules is available in the D&D Beyond 2014 Basic Rules druid entry.
The exception: Circle of the Land (Coast)
When a druid chooses Circle of the Land and selects Coast, the subclass’s 3rd-level circle-spell list includes Misty Step. The feature is tied to the Coast choice, not to the druid class as a whole.

- Use the 2014 fifth-edition rules.
- Choose Circle of the Land as the druid’s circle.
- Choose the Coast option within that circle.
- Reach druid level 3, when the Coast circle spells become available.
- Treat Misty Step as a circle spell that is always prepared.
You do not have to find the spell, copy it into a spellbook, or spend one of your normal preparation choices to add it. The Coast feature supplies the spell automatically once the relevant level is reached.

The official rules sentence in the Wizards of the Coast System Reference Document 5.1 states: “Once you gain access to a circle spell, you always have it prepared, and it doesn’t count against the number of spells you can prepare each day.”

For a Coast druid, that means Misty Step remains available among the character’s prepared spells without using one of the ordinary preparation slots. It does not turn the spell into a spell on the general druid list, and it does not grant the spell to druids who selected a different circle or a different Coast option.
Standard druid versus Coast druid
| Character option | Can choose Misty Step from the normal 2014 druid list? | How the spell can be available |
|---|---|---|
| 2014 druid with no applicable circle feature | No | The cited class rules do not list it as a standard druid spell. |
| Circle of the Land druid who chose Coast | Not as a normal list choice | It is granted as a 3rd-level Coast circle spell and is always prepared. |
| Druid using another circle or an unverified supplement option | Not established by the cited 2014 rules | Check that subclass’s exact spell feature and the campaign’s allowed books. |
| Druid using the 2024 rules | Not established here | Verify the 2024 class and subclass text rather than applying the 2014 answer automatically. |
Does a Coast druid need to prepare it each day?
No. The point of the circle-spell rule is that the spell is always prepared after the character gains access to it. It therefore does not compete with the druid’s ordinary daily preparation choices.

This is different from a druid who merely wants the spell and assumes that every class spell can be prepared. Under the 2014 rules covered here, Misty Step is absent from the standard druid list; the Coast circle feature is what supplies access.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCan every Circle of the Land druid get it?
No. The relevant choice is Coast. The research-supported rule identifies Misty Step on the Coast circle-spell list, so a Circle of the Land druid who selected another terrain should not be treated as having this particular circle spell under the cited rules.

If a table uses a supplement that adds or changes circle options, use the spell list printed with that option. Do not assume that a similarly named subclass or a different terrain grants the same spell.
Common mistakes to avoid
- “All druids get Misty Step.” Not under the 2014 standard class list. The supported exception is a Coast Circle of the Land druid.
- “A druid can prepare any spell in the game.” A 2014 druid prepares from the druid spell list unless another feature grants access.
- “The Coast druid must give up another prepared spell.” Circle spells are always prepared and do not count against the daily preparation number.
- “Not being on the druid list makes the spell impossible.” Subclass features can provide spells that the base class list does not contain.
- “The 2014 answer automatically applies to 2024.” Edition changes can alter class and subclass spell access, so check the rules version used by the table.
A quick eligibility check
Use this checklist when resolving a character-sheet question:
- Is the campaign using the 2014 fifth-edition rules?
- Is the character a druid rather than another class with a different spell-access rule?
- Did the character choose Circle of the Land?
- Is Coast the selected option?
- Has the character reached druid level 3, when the Coast circle spells are gained?
If every answer is yes, Misty Step is the Coast druid’s always-prepared circle spell under the cited 2014 rules. If any answer is no, the standard 2014 druid rules do not provide it through the normal druid spell list, and the character’s other legal options must be checked individually.
What to check when your table uses another edition or book
The title does not identify an edition, and “D&D 5e” can refer to more than one rules presentation. The supported answer above is specifically for the 2014 fifth-edition material represented by the Basic Rules and the SRD 5.1 text. For a 2024 character, a later subclass revision, or a campaign using optional supplements, read the exact class and subclass entry that governs that character.
Also check the Dungeon Master’s permitted-book list. A feature that exists in a sourcebook may not be available in a campaign that limits character options, while a house rule may deliberately expand the normal spell list. Those table decisions are separate from what the 2014 core rules grant by default.
