Yes. ESO companions can deal damage. They fight beside your character, use an ability bar, and can be configured for a damage or hybrid role through their equipment, slotted abilities, and behavior settings. Their combat level also raises health and overall power, which affects weapon and spell damage. However, the official material does not provide a current, comparable DPS number or prove that companions match player damage.

Companions in The Elder Scrolls Online are combat participants, not merely quest characters or cosmetic followers. The official support documentation describes them fighting with you, wearing companion equipment, and using selected abilities. You can therefore build a companion whose main purpose is dealing damage, or combine damage with healing, tanking, or utility.

What damage companions actually do

A companion has an active ability bar and a broad collection of abilities intended to support different combat roles. The official Blackwood/Update 30 notes explicitly say that players can customize a companion for “tanking, healing, damage, and any hybridization desired.” That makes damage a supported role in the system, rather than an accidental side effect of having a companion present. Read the full role description in the official Xbox Update 30 patch notes.

In practical terms, a damage companion attacks enemies with its equipped weapons and slotted skills while your character fights. It can contribute single-target pressure, area attacks, or supportive effects depending on the abilities you select. The exact attacks available depend on the companion and the equipment and abilities you give it; the reviewed official documentation does not establish one universal damage kit or a permanently best companion.

How companion ability use produces damage

Abilities are used in left-to-right priority

Companions do not freely improvise every skill in the same way a human player might. Their active abilities are arranged on the companion bar, and the system attempts them from left to right. An ability is used when its target is valid and its individual requirements are satisfied. This priority order is central to how a damage setup behaves: an earlier skill can be attempted before a later one whenever both are available.

Companion skills also use cooldowns. Some have additional restrictions, such as requiring a particular weapon type. A damage bar can therefore appear correct while producing little output if the companion lacks the required weapon, cannot find a valid target, or is waiting for a cooldown. The Update 30 system explanation covers these priority and requirement rules in the official patch notes.

Equipment and slotted abilities determine the role

The support guide for ESO companions confirms that companions can use their own gear and abilities. To make damage the priority, equip the companion with gear intended for the offensive skills you have chosen, then fill the available ability slots with damage abilities and any essential utility. The system is flexible: you can dedicate most slots to offense, or reserve slots for healing, crowd control, or defensive tools when your character needs them.

There is no official “DPS” switch that guarantees a particular output. The role comes from the complete configuration: equipment, the order of abilities, weapon requirements, target conditions, and the companion’s behavior. A bar packed with attacks may still underperform if those attacks conflict with the companion’s weapon or if the encounter frequently invalidates their targets.

How to configure a damage companion

The game does not require a complicated rotation from you, but a deliberate setup prevents many common problems. Use this sequence as a practical configuration checklist:

  1. Open the companion management interface. Select the companion’s equipment and ability controls so you can see which weapons, items, and skills are currently assigned.
  2. Choose an offensive equipment direction. Match the weapon to the skills you want the companion to use. If a skill requires a specific weapon type, that weapon must be equipped for the skill to function.
  3. Slot the most important damage ability first. Because the companion checks abilities from left to right, place the action you want attempted earliest in the first available position.
  4. Fill later slots with complementary attacks. Add area or single-target skills according to the encounters you expect, while remembering that every skill has its own cooldown and target requirements.
  5. Keep only necessary utility. A heal, interrupt, or defensive action can make the companion more reliable, but every utility slot replaces a potential damage slot. Choose the trade-off for the content you are playing.
  6. Test the setup in a real fight. Watch whether the companion reaches the enemy, uses the expected skills, and remains alive. If an ability never fires, check its weapon, target, and requirement conditions before replacing it.

This process creates a damage-oriented configuration without claiming a specific numerical result. Official pages describe the tools and rules, but they do not publish a current damage rotation that is guaranteed to be optimal for every companion or version.

Behavior settings and target control

Companion behavior can change how consistently damage is applied. The launch-era combat notes describe an Aggressive (Damage Done) behavior setting and commands that tell a companion to engage a target or pull back. When you direct the companion to attack, it can focus on the chosen enemy instead of waiting for an incidental target. When you order it to withdraw, it stops committing to that engagement, which is useful when you need to reposition or avoid a dangerous area.

The same official documentation explains that companions attempt defensive actions, including blocking some heavy attacks, interrupting certain abilities, and breaking free from control effects. Those actions are not perfectly timed and have cooldowns. A companion that spends time recovering, crowd-controlled, or out of range will deal less damage simply because it has fewer opportunities to use offensive abilities. The behavior and defensive details are documented in the official PC/Mac Update 30 notes.

Why companion level affects damage

Companions gain experience by fighting alongside your character. According to the Update 30 rules, their combat level automatically increases health and overall power. That power affects both weapon damage and spell damage, so leveling is directly relevant to an offensive build rather than being only a survivability system.

Leveling also expands the companion’s ability options. The Update 30 notes state that additional ability slots unlock as combat levels rise, and that the ultimate slot and ultimate ability unlock at combat level 20. Treat that level-20 threshold as the rule documented for Update 30, not as a promise that every later live version has identical unlock timing. Current game updates can change progression details.

In practical play, a newly acquired or lightly used companion may feel weak even with a sensible bar because it has less combat level, fewer slots, and lower power. Continue using the companion in combat while checking that its equipment and abilities remain valid as new slots become available.

Can you make an ESO companion a DPS?

Yes, you can make damage the companion’s primary job. The official Necrom chapter material describes companion gear and abilities as tools that complement the player, while the Update 30 notes explicitly include damage among the available roles. A damage setup is most appropriate when your character already supplies the healing or control the group needs and you want the companion to add pressure.

A hybrid can be better when survival limits total damage. For example, one defensive or healing ability may allow the companion to stay active through an encounter instead of repeatedly being defeated. Because companion abilities are subject to target checks and cooldowns, reliable uptime can matter more than filling every slot with an attack that rarely activates.

Do not interpret “DPS companion” as “replacement for a player damage dealer.” The available official sources establish that companions deal damage and that their power scales with combat level, but they do not establish parity with a player, a minimum endgame standard, or a universally strongest damage companion.

How much damage do companions do?

There is no current official DPS figure in the cited material. The sources do not report damage-per-second measurements, controlled comparisons between companions, or a ranking that remains valid across patches. Consequently, any precise number presented as a general ESO companion DPS value would need a separately documented test with a defined game version, gear, ability bar, target, and encounter length.

Damage also varies with conditions that a single number would hide:

  • Combat level: higher level raises health and overall power, including weapon and spell damage.
  • Equipment: the companion’s weapon and gear determine whether particular abilities can function and influence the offensive configuration.
  • Ability order: left-to-right priority changes which skills are attempted first.
  • Cooldowns and requirements: an unavailable or invalid skill contributes no damage during that window.
  • Position and target access: movement, range, target validity, and defensive actions reduce offensive uptime.
  • Patch version: later updates can tune or fix companion behavior.

For those reasons, use the companion as a configurable source of additional damage, not as a fixed benchmark. If you compare setups yourself, keep the companion level, gear, ability order, target, and encounter conditions constant and record the game version.

Common reasons a damage companion appears weak

An ability never activates

Check the skill’s weapon requirement first. Then verify that a valid target exists and that the skill is not on cooldown. Since the companion evaluates the bar from left to right, an earlier ability can also change when later abilities are attempted.

The companion stops attacking

Confirm its behavior and target command. The official command system allows you to direct engagement or make the companion withdraw. A withdrawal command, invalid target, distance, or repositioning can all remove the companion from the fight.

The companion dies before contributing

Damage is irrelevant while the companion is defeated or repeatedly occupied by defensive recovery. Add the defensive or healing support needed for the encounter, and remember that blocks, interrupts, and break-free actions have imperfect timing and cooldowns.

The bar has too few slots

Companion slots unlock through combat leveling. Continue earning experience with the companion active, and revisit the bar as new slots become available. The documented Update 30 system places the ultimate slot and ability at combat level 20, although later versions may revise progression.

What later updates mean for the answer

The fundamental answer remains yes, but balance and reliability are version-sensitive. The original role and leveling rules come largely from 2021’s Update 30 documentation. Later official notes show that companion fixes and tuning continued; the Update 44 PC/Mac patch notes include subsequent companion changes, including a durability-related adjustment.

That history is why an old guide’s exact behavior, slot timing, or damage expectation should not automatically be treated as current. The safest enduring conclusions are that companions can attack, damage is a supported role, equipment and ability order matter, and combat level affects offensive power. For a live-service game, verify any detailed build or numerical claim against the patch version you are playing.

Bottom line for players

ESO companions do damage when configured and directed to fight. Equip them for the abilities you want, arrange those abilities in priority order, account for weapon and target requirements, and level the companion through combat so its power and available slots increase. You can choose a pure damage emphasis or a hybrid that sacrifices some attacks for survival and support.

What the official sources do not establish is an exact current DPS value, equality with player damage, or a permanent best companion. Treat damage as a flexible contribution whose result depends on level, gear, abilities, behavior, encounter conditions, and the live game version.
