Can Fallout: New Vegas RTX Remix Run on AMD or Older Nvidia GPUs?

Short answer: NVIDIA’s official RTX Remix baseline is an RTX GPU. A current community report for the Fallout: New Vegas RTX project says AMD Radeon RX 6000-series and newer cards, plus desktop Intel Arc cards, are compatible, but that is an unofficial project claim and does not establish performance. Pre-RTX Nvidia cards can run the unmodified game, yet no authoritative source confirms them for the RTX Remix renderer.

That distinction matters because “can run” may mean only that the game launches. A path-traced Remix build can be technically compatible and still be unplayable at your resolution and quality settings. The project build, driver, ray-tracing hardware, VRAM, and the particular rendering effects enabled all affect the result.

What RTX Remix officially requires

NVIDIA’s current technical requirements state that you need any RTX GPU to use RTX Remix and its mods effectively. NVIDIA recommends a GeForce RTX 4070 or higher with 12 GB of VRAM. That recommendation is a useful performance target, not a published minimum specifically validated for Fallout: New Vegas.

RTX Remix is not simply a texture pack. Its runtime intercepts the fixed-function rendering used by compatible DirectX 8 and DirectX 9 games, then replaces parts of the pipeline with modern lighting and material systems. NVIDIA’s compatibility documentation says the renderer does not directly support OpenGL or older DirectX versions. Even a game that uses DirectX 8 or 9 can still crash, display missing objects, or show other defects after interception.

ASUS Dual Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB GDDR6 Gaming Graphics Card | PCIe 5.0, HDMI 2.1b, DisplayPort 2.1a, 2.5-slot design, Axial-tech Fans, 0dB Technology
  • Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
  • 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
  • 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
  • Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
  • Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs

The official RTX requirement is therefore the safest answer when you need a supported configuration. It is more authoritative than the original game’s requirements and more stable than a community compatibility list that can change as the project or runtime changes.

What “any RTX GPU” does and does not promise

  • It establishes NVIDIA’s hardware class for running RTX Remix; it is not a promise of a fixed frame rate.
  • It does not mean every RTX card will deliver smooth path tracing at 4K or with every effect enabled.
  • It does not turn the GeForce 6-era requirement for the original game into an RTX Remix requirement.
  • It does not certify AMD or Intel cards, because those are outside NVIDIA’s published minimum wording.

Why Fallout: New Vegas’ original requirements are misleading here

Bethesda lists a GeForce 6-series or ATI 1300XT-series equivalent for the unmodified PC version of Fallout: New Vegas. That specification describes the game’s original renderer, not the extra workload introduced by RTX Remix. A card that comfortably exceeds the Bethesda requirement can still lack the hardware or driver support expected by Remix.

Use case Published hardware guidance What it means
Original Fallout: New Vegas GeForce 6-series or ATI 1300XT-series equivalent (Bethesda Support) Baseline for the unmodified game; it says nothing about path tracing or RTX Remix.
RTX Remix in general Any RTX GPU minimum (NVIDIA Omniverse Technical Requirements) Official renderer baseline from NVIDIA.
NVIDIA’s recommended RTX Remix configuration GeForce RTX 4070 or higher, 12 GB VRAM NVIDIA’s recommendation for a more capable Remix setup, not a Fallout: New Vegas benchmark.
Fallout: New Vegas RTX community report AMD RX 6000-or-newer and desktop Intel Arc reported compatible Unofficial project-specific claim; no frame-rate or AMD VRAM target is supplied.

The practical consequence is simple: use Bethesda’s figures to judge whether the original game should launch, and use RTX Remix’s requirements to judge the modded renderer. Do not substitute one for the other.

Can an AMD Radeon GPU run the New Vegas RTX project?

A current community report for the specific Fallout: New Vegas RTX project identifies Radeon RX 6000-series and newer cards as compatible. It also lists desktop Intel Arc cards. This is the strongest project-specific AMD evidence in the available material, but it is not an NVIDIA certification or an independent performance test.

What the AMD report establishes

  • RX 6000-and-newer is the reported compatibility floor for that project at the time of the report.
  • The statement applies to the named Fallout: New Vegas project, not automatically to every RTX Remix mod.
  • Compatibility can change when the project updates its runtime, assets, shader configuration, or required driver.

What it does not establish

  • It does not provide a minimum AMD model beyond the RX 6000 family split.
  • It does not publish a validated VRAM requirement for AMD cards.
  • It does not show frame rates, frame-time consistency, resolution, upscaling settings, or which path-traced effects were enabled.
  • It does not prove that an RX 6000 card will perform like an RTX 4070.

An RX 6800 therefore falls into the “reported compatible, performance unverified” category. You should check the exact release notes and installation instructions for the project version you intend to use, then test at your target resolution. Treat a successful launch as a compatibility result, not a guarantee of playable path-traced performance.

Can an older Nvidia GTX card run it?

No authoritative source in the available documentation confirms pre-RTX Nvidia support for the RTX Remix renderer. GTX cards can run the original Fallout: New Vegas when they meet the game’s conventional DirectX requirements, but that does not establish support for the Remix runtime.

The safest classification for a GTX 10-series, GTX 900-series, or older Nvidia card is therefore unverified for RTX Remix. Some users may report partial success with a particular build, but an anecdote cannot replace NVIDIA’s published RTX baseline. A project update could also remove a workaround that once allowed a launch.

If you own a GTX card, separate these two tests

  1. Test the original game. Install the unmodified release and confirm that it runs normally with your intended resolution and mods.
  2. Test the Remix build only if the project explicitly lists your GPU. If the documentation does not list it, assume support is not established and keep a backup of the original installation.
  3. Do not infer support from DirectX compatibility alone. Remix adds a replacement renderer and ray-traced effects; passing the game’s old DirectX check is not enough.

How to evaluate a candidate GPU

Use four separate axes rather than relying on a brand name or a single model number.

Axis Questions to ask Why it matters
Ray-tracing-capable architecture Does the GPU belong to the RTX class, or is it an AMD RX 6000-or-newer card listed by the project? Hardware acceleration and the project’s supported architecture determine whether the renderer can operate as intended.
Driver and API support Is the operating-system driver current, and does it expose the graphics APIs expected by the runtime? A supported GPU with an old or broken driver can crash, render incorrectly, or fail to initialize.
VRAM How much memory does the card have, and how much does the project recommend? NVIDIA recommends 12 GB for an RTX 4070-class Remix system. No validated AMD-specific VRAM target is published for this project.
Project-specific support Does the exact Fallout: New Vegas RTX build list the card and driver combination? RTX Remix compatibility is not universal; individual games and builds can have defects or regressions.

Step-by-step: check your system before installing

  1. Identify the exact GPU. In Windows, open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc, select Performance, and choose GPU. Record the full model name, not just “Radeon” or “GeForce.”
  2. Record dedicated VRAM. Task Manager shows dedicated GPU memory; a hardware-information utility can provide a second reading. Do not count shared system memory as dedicated VRAM.
  3. Check the project’s current compatibility statement. Look for your exact GPU family, the required Remix runtime version, and any driver notes. The RX 6000-or-newer statement is a community report, so verify it against the build you are downloading.
  4. Update the graphics driver from the GPU vendor. Reboot after installation. If a new driver introduces crashes, use the project’s documented known-good version rather than assuming the newest package is always best.
  5. Confirm the game uses a supported rendering path. RTX Remix targets fixed-function DirectX 8/9 interception. A wrapper, OpenGL mode, or an older DirectX path outside that scope can prevent initialization.
  6. Back up the original game and saves. Keep a clean copy so you can distinguish a mod problem from a damaged base installation.
  7. Start with conservative settings. Test a lower resolution and disable optional path-traced effects one at a time. This tells you whether a failure is basic compatibility or simply a performance limit.

Launching is not the same as playable performance

Path tracing can be substantially more demanding than the original Fallout: New Vegas renderer. The available sources contain no Fallout: New Vegas RTX frame-rate benchmark and no validated minimum VRAM figure for AMD cards. Any claim that a particular RX or GTX model will deliver a specific frame rate would therefore be speculation.

Use a staged test instead:

  • First confirm that the game reaches a save or interior cell without a renderer crash.
  • Then check for missing geometry, black surfaces, broken transparency, and lighting that changes when you move the camera.
  • Finally measure frame pacing at the resolution and quality level you actually plan to use. A high average frame rate with severe stutter is not a successful practical result.

NVIDIA’s RTX 4070/12 GB recommendation is the clearest published reference point for a capable RTX Remix PC. It should not be presented as a tested Fallout: New Vegas number, and it should not be used to promise equivalent behavior from an AMD card merely because a community list says the card is compatible.

Troubleshooting common failures

The original game works, but the Remix build will not start

Recheck the GPU against the project’s current list, reinstall the required runtime files, and verify that the game is using the DirectX 8/9 path expected by the mod. A GTX card passing the original game’s startup test does not demonstrate Remix support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The game starts and then crashes in a specific area

NVIDIA notes that individual games can crash or show rendering defects even when their API path is compatible. Test a clean save, remove unrelated overlays and injectors, and compare the behavior with the project’s known-issues list. If only one cell or effect triggers the crash, report that reproducible location rather than treating it as a universal GPU failure.

Black textures, missing objects, or incorrect lighting appear

These symptoms point to a compatibility or asset issue rather than proof that the card is too slow. Confirm the exact mod build, clear only the caches that the project documentation tells you to clear, and test with optional lighting features disabled. Do not delete the original game files without a backup.

Frame rate is too low after a successful launch

Lower resolution first, then disable the most expensive path-traced options individually. Watch VRAM use and frame-time consistency. If the project provides no AMD performance target, the only reliable answer is a test on your own card and settings.

Which answer applies to your GPU?

Your hardware Status for Fallout: New Vegas RTX Remix Recommended expectation
Any Nvidia RTX GPU Meets NVIDIA’s official hardware baseline. Supported class, but performance varies; 4070-class/12 GB is NVIDIA’s recommendation.
AMD Radeon RX 6000 or newer Reported compatible by the current project community report. Try the exact listed build; treat performance and VRAM needs as unverified.
Desktop Intel Arc Reported compatible by the same project report. Verify the current runtime and driver notes; no benchmark is supplied.
Pre-RTX Nvidia (GTX or older) No authoritative RTX Remix confirmation. Expect the original game to work if its requirements are met; consider Remix support unverified.
GPU without the required modern driver/API path Not established, regardless of raw game compatibility. Update or change hardware only after checking the project’s documented requirements.

Bottom line for AMD and older Nvidia owners

If you want the least ambiguous, officially supported route, use an RTX GPU; NVIDIA recommends an RTX 4070 or higher with 12 GB of VRAM for RTX Remix. An RX 6000-or-newer AMD card may run the Fallout: New Vegas project according to its current community report, but that statement is unofficial and comes without a performance or VRAM guarantee. Older Nvidia cards remain a separate case: they can be fine for the original game, while RTX Remix support is unverified.
